The 63-year-old will step down as host at the end of the season and described his time on the show as an “absolute joy and privilege”. Speaking on his podcast, The Rest Is Football, he said: “It has been an absolute joy and privilege to present such an iconic show for the BBC. “But all things have to come to an end.” Lineker went on to say the broadcaster enters a new three-year deal to host top-flight highlights, and that to stay on for another 12 months “would be a bit weird”. “I think the next contract they’re looking to do Match Of The Day slightly differently, so I think it makes sense for someone else to take the helm. “I bowed out in my football career when I felt it was the right time. I feel this is now the right time.” Lineker refused to …

Sixty years after MOTD’s launch, do TV viewers really still “look away now” to avoid the scores before 10.30pm on a Saturday? In the era of YouTube fan channels, TikTok accounts and wall-to-wall live coverage, is a set-piece highlights programme showing its age? Niall Paterson looks over the options for one of the BBC’s biggest brands – how can it change for an audience falling out of love with linear TV without alienating other viewers? Real Madrid’s LaLiga match against Valencia postponed due to deadly floods | Football News

The Spanish Football Federation adjusted this week’s LaLiga schedule in response to the disaster. Real Madrid’s away match at Valencia this weekend has been postponed by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) due to floods that have killed more than 95 people. Villarreal’s home match against Rayo Vallecano was also suspended after the flash floods in eastern Spain. LaLiga asked the RFEF to postpone Valencia’s and Villarreal’s matches on Saturday as well as three second-division games involving teams from affected areas. “It has been agreed to postpone matches that were to be played in professional and non-professional competitions, both in 11-a-side football and in indoor football [in the Valencia region],” the RFEF said in a statement on Thursday. The federation had already postponed several midweek Copa del Rey first-round matches, including Valencia’s game against Parla Escuela. A moment of silence for the flood victims will be held at matches this weekend in Spain, including league leaders Barcelona’s Catalan derby against Espanyol on Sunday. Source link

DNA helps match ‘Well Man’ skeleton to 800-year-old Norwegian saga

DNA helps match ‘Well Man’ skeleton to 800-year-old Norwegian saga

The complete skeletal remains of the “Well Man” Age Hojem, NTNU University Museum A Norwegian saga written more than 800 years ago describes how a dead man was thrown into a castle well – and now, researchers believe they have identified the remains of this man. The Sverris saga is an 182-verse Old Norse text that records the exploits of King Sverre Sigurdsson, who rose to power in the second half of the 12th century AD. One part says that a rival clan who attacked Sverresborg castle, near Trondheim, Norway, “took a dead man and cast him unto the well, and then filled it up with stones”. The well was inside the castle’s ramparts and was the community’s only permanent water source. It has been speculated that the man thrown into the well in the saga may have had a disease and putting him there was an early act of biological warfare. In 1938, a medieval well in the ruins of Sverresborg castle was partly drained and a skeleton was found beneath rubble and boulders …

Silicon Valley shaken as open-source AI models Llama 3.1 and Mistral Large 2 match industry leaders

Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More Open-source artificial intelligence has reached a watershed moment, challenging the long-held dominance of proprietary systems and promising to reshape the AI landscape. This week, two significant developments have propelled open-source AI models to the forefront of technological capability, potentially democratizing access to cutting-edge AI tools. On Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Meta, unveiled Llama 3.1, declaring it had achieved “frontier-level” status. This bold claim suggests that Meta’s freely available AI now rivals the most advanced systems from industry leaders like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Just a day later, Mistral, an emerging French AI lab, released Mistral Large 2, a model that reportedly matches or surpasses existing top-tier systems, particularly in multilingual applications. In my experience, the accuracy gap between open-source and proprietary is negligible now and open-source is cheaper, faster, more customizable & sustainable for companies! No excuse anymore not to become an AI builder based on open-source AI (vs outsourcing to APIs)! pic.twitter.com/3bW5aA1tNt — …

Match looks to Hinge as Tinder fails

Match looks to Hinge as Tinder fails

Match Group, the company that owns several dating apps, including Tinder and Hinge, released its first-quarter earnings report on Tuesday, which shows that Tinder’s paying user base has decreased for the sixth quarter in a row. On the other hand, Hinge has seen an increase in members who are willing to pay for the app. Tinder had 10 million paying users in Q1 2024, which is a 9% decrease from the previous year. Meanwhile, Hinge now has 1.4 million paying users, a 31% increase year over year. The decline of Tinder was foreseeable due to the shift in dating app culture that has taken place in recent years. Younger users are more interested in pursuing serious, long-term relationships instead of casual hookups, which is what Tinder is known for. Since its inception, Hinge has gained popularity among users looking for more substantial connections. While Tinder struggles to retain paying users, Hinge is on track to become a “$1 billion revenue business,” touts CEO Bernard Kim during a conference call with investors on Wednesday morning. They feature TopCon solar cells and have a power conversion efficiency of 20.02%. (Solar panel efficiency – how much sunlight a panel converts to electricity – typically ranges from 15-23%.) Electrek’s Take Solar panels are typically blue polycristalline or black monocrystalline, so panels made of “colored encapsulation material [that] achieves a homogeneous red effect,” as Sonnenkraft puts it, is something I’ve not seen before.
