Massive Solar Storm to Trigger Northern Lights Across North America

Massive Solar Storm to Trigger Northern Lights Across North America

[ad_1] Here’s where they’ll be visible. Nightsky Invite A massive solar storm is blasting the Earth’s atmosphere with charged particles, resulting in spectacular auroras that will be visible across the United States this weekend. The storm is expected to hit our planet on Friday night, growing to a “severe” Category G4 geomagnetic on Saturday night, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That’s one level short of the strongest storms on its space weather scale and the first predicted G4 storm since 2005, as the Washington Post reports. The auroras are expected to be visible as far south as Alabama. We highly recommend finding a dark location away from too much light pollution and cloud cover to watch the spectacle unfold. A handy map provided by the NOAA shows where you’ll be able to see the show. Stormy Suniels During a solar storm, which can either be triggered by solar flares, coronal mass ejections or other solar activity, huge amounts of plasma are blasted across outer space. Some of these electrically charged particles collide with …

Dell warns 49 million customers about massive data breach

[ad_1] Dell has warned customers of a massive data breach following a hacker’s claims they accessed information belonging to roughly 49 million customers. The U.S. computer manufacturer has started distributing data breach notifications to customers impacted by the incident, detailing how an attacker gained unauthorized entry to an online portal that housed customer purchase information on its website. The email seen by ReadWrite stated, “We are currently investigating an incident involving a Dell portal, which contains a database with limited types of customer information related to purchases from Dell.” Dell states that the breach is not a “significant risk to our customers” According to Dell’s data breach notification, it seems that the attack resulted in the theft of personal information only, without compromising any financial data. The information stolen includes names, physical addresses, as well as hardware and order details from its systems. The company stated that it “promptly implemented our incident response procedures, began investigating, took steps to contain the incident and notified law enforcement.” It added that a third-party forensics firm has been …

Ukraine warns of outages as ‘massive’ Russian strikes target power plants

[ad_1] Ukraine on Wednesday warned of possible power shutdowns across the country after a “massive” wave of Russian missiles and drones targeted the country’s battered energy system. Issued on: 08/05/2024 – 15:18 3 min Moscow also said its forces had taken control of two more frontline villages, as it ups its attacks both on land and from the skies with Ukrainian troops struggling to hold the front line more than two years into the war. “On the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II, Nazi (President Vladimir) Putin launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The intensified strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure triggered fresh warnings of blackouts and electricity rationing. “There may be power cuts for household and industrial consumers across Ukraine… due to new damage to the equipment of Ukrainian power plants caused by Russian strikes,” power operator Ukrenergo said.  Russia’s defence ministry said its strikes were in retaliation. “In response to the Kyiv regime’s attempt to damage Russian energy facilities, this morning the armed …

Russia Hits Ukraine’s Power Grid With a ‘Massive’ Attack on a Day Marking the WWII Defeat of Nazism

Russia Hits Ukraine’s Power Grid With a ‘Massive’ Attack on a Day Marking the WWII Defeat of Nazism

[ad_1] KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces unleashed a nighttime barrage of more than 50 cruise missiles and explosive drones at Ukraine’s power grid Wednesday, targeting a wide area in what President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called a “massive” attack on the day the country celebrates the defeat of Nazism in World War II. The bombardment blasted targets in seven Ukrainian regions, including the Kyiv area and parts of the south and west, damaging homes and the country’s rail network, authorities said. Three people, including an 8-year-old girl, were injured, according to officials. Russia has repeatedly pounded Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during the war that is stretching into its third year and has claimed thousands of lives. By taking out the power, the Kremlin’s forces aim to rob Ukrainian manufacturing of its energy supply, especially military plants, and crush public morale. Russian attacks have damaged nearly half of Ukraine’s power infrastructure since the start of the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, officials say. The damage is estimated at $12.5 billion, with $1 billion inflicted during the past …

‘I’ve had massive highs and deep lows’: Edward Timpson on winning for the Tories and being sacked by Liz Truss | Life and style

[ad_1] “I do question whether I’m actually a politician,” Edward Timpson says. “It’s a bit late now, isn’t it?” I say. He laughs. “Yes, it’s a question I should have asked at the start.” Why does he question it? “Because … maybe I didn’t feel I was ruthless enough, not sharp-elbowed enough.” However much he is in denial, the Conservative MP is definitely a politician, though not for much longer. He joined parliament in 2008 as member for Crewe and Nantwich after the death of Labour’s Gwyneth Dunwoody, who had represented the area for 34 years, lost his seat by 48 votes after three recounts in 2017, and returned to parliament in 2019 representing the neighbouring seat of Eddisbury. Now a boyish 50, he’s had enough, and is standing down at the next election. Timpson is certainly no conveyor-belt MP. He is reserved, a little shy and deeply serious, with a mission to make the life of the country’s disadvantaged children better. He is also supremely fit (the week we meet he is about to …

Madonna’s biggest-ever concert transforms Rio’s Copacabana beach into a massive dance floor

[ad_1] An estimated 1.6 million people attended the show, G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. That is more than 10 times Madonna’s record attendance of 130,000 at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987. Madonna’s official website hyped the show as the biggest ever in her four-decade career. In recent days, the buzz was palpable. Fans milled outside the stately, beachfront Copacabana Palace hotel, where Madonna is staying, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pop star. During the sound check on the stage set up in front of the hotel, they danced on the sand. By midday Saturday, fans crowded in front of the hotel. A white-bearded man carried a sign saying, “Welcome Madonna you are the best I love you.” Flags with “Madonna” printed against a background of Copacabana’s iconic black and white waved sidewalk pattern hung from balconies. The area was packed with street vendors and concert attendees kitted out in themed T-shirts, sweating under a baking sun. “Since Madonna arrived here, I’ve been coming every day with this outfit to welcome …

[ad_1] RIO DE JANEIRO —  Madonna put on a free concert on Copacabana beach Saturday night, turning Rio de Janeiro’s vast stretch of sand into an enormous dance floor teeming with a multitude of her fans. It was the last show of The Celebration Tour, her first retrospective, which kicked off in October in London. The “Queen of Pop” began the show with her 1998 hit Nothing Really Matters. Huge cheers rose from the buzzing, tightly packed crowd, pressed up against the barriers. Others held house parties in brightly lit apartments and hotels overlooking the beachfront. Helicopters and drones flew overhead, and motorboats and sailboats anchored off the beach filled the bay. “Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world,” Madonna, 65, told the crowd. Pointing out the ocean view, the mountains and the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the city, she added: “This place is magic.” Madonna performed her classic hits, including Like a Virgin and Hung Up. For the introduction to Like a Prayer, her head was completely covered in …

There Is a Massive Blind Spot in Our Knowledge

There Is a Massive Blind Spot in Our Knowledge

[ad_1] Source: Courtesy of Gregg Henriques There is a massive blind spot in our understanding of the world. This is evident in the current state of our knowledge systems, which can be described as being in a state of chaotic, fragmented pluralism. The reason for this is that there is no shared, general system of understanding that allows us to grip the world and our place in it effectively. Those who know the history of religion, philosophy, and science in the West (i.e., Western Europe that spawned the scientific Enlightenment) will be well-acquainted with this fact. This has not always been the case. Indeed, for many hundreds of years the worldview in the West was coherent and essentially singular (which is not to say accurate). The Roman Empire adopted Christianity in 380 AD, and it was the primary belief system in Europe for over a thousand years. Indeed, the emergence of the “Western World” is intimately connected with the idea of “Christendom.” However, the dominant grip that Christianity had on shaping the worldview of the …

Trump Media’s Newly Hired Auditing Firm Was Just Busted by the SEC for ‘Massive Fraud’

[ad_1] SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday charged an auditing firm hired by Trump Media and Technology Group just 37 days ago with “massive fraud” — though not for any work it performed for former President Donald Trump’s media company. The SEC charged the accounting firm BF Borgers and its owner, Benjamin F. Borgers, with “deliberate and systematic failures” in more than 1,500 audits. The charges include failing to abide by accounting rules, fabricating documentation to cover up its shortcomings, and falsely stating in audit reports that its work met audit standards. To settle the SEC charges, BF Borgers agreed to pay a $12 million fine while its owner agreed to pay a fine of $2 million, according to the SEC. Benjamin Borgers did not immediately return a call seeking comment. BF Borgers and Benjamin Borgers also agreed to permanent suspensions, effective immediately, that will prevent them handling SEC-related matters as accountants. The company had previously cycled through at least two other auditors — one that resigned the account in …
