Valverde has sprained ankle, say Real Madrid

Valverde has sprained ankle, say Real Madrid

Sept 22 : Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has been diagnosed with a grade-three sprain in his left ankle, the Spanish club said on Tuesday. The Uruguay international sustained the injury during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Atletico Madrid after a heavy challenge from winger Lee Kang-in, an incident that did not result in a booking. Valverde completed the match but was later found to have suffered significant trauma to the ankle.  Real manager Jose Mourinho criticised the officiating after the game, questioning why no penalty was awarded for the challenge. A grade-three sprain is the most serious type of ligament injury and involves a complete tear of the affected ligament. Spanish media reports said Valverde is expected to be sidelined for between two and three weeks, ruling him out of Uruguay’s upcoming international fixtures. Source link

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum to Expand to a Second Location in Madrid

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid is expanding to a second location just a few blocks from its current site due to overcrowding in its galleries, El Pais reported. The project is slated to be complete in 2032. The museum, known as the Thyssen, was founded in 1992 by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza to house his private collection. The 107,639-square-foot building is known as the Ice and Automobile Palace and is located in Madrid’s Literary Quarter. The city-owned space has been unoccupied since 2007 and, prior to its reopening as a museum, the building will undergo a €70 million ($80.8 million) renovation. Source link

Atletico Madrid beat Malaga but Alvarez absence is felt

MADRID, Aug 19 : Atletico Madrid will hope for a swift resolution to the future of wantaway forward Julian Alvarez following their limp attacking display despite a 2-0 home win over promoted Malaga in their opening LaLiga fixture on Wednesday. Midfielder Lee Kang-in scored 13 minutes after coming off the bench for his debut as he cut inside from the right wing and curled his shot into the top corner of the net, before Alex Baena’s wonderful free kick ended the contest. “We are happy for the victory,” Lee said. “We will continue to work hard to improve in the next game. I still lack rhythm but with hard work I will go and we will improve.” The goals were two moments of supreme quality in an otherwise limp attacking display that will be of concern for coach Diego Simeone amid what appears an impasse with Alvarez. The Argentine forward has made no secret of his desire to leave the club for Barcelona, saying during the recent World Cup it would “fulfil my dream”. Barcelona …

Hemingway’s Madrid, one bite at a time

Hemingway’s Madrid, one bite at a time

Madrid remembers its writers. Barrio de Las Letras never let them leave. By the 16th century, it was theaters that drew the bohemians. Poets, playwrights, novelists, dreamers. The printers, the bookshops, the guesthouses and taverns, they followed. Lope de Vega wrote of honor and conflict a few doors down from where Miguel de Cervantes penned the first quixotic quest. Francisco de Quevedo drank in long-gone watering holes where Luis de Góngora muttered his verse. Hemingway drank everywhere, but we’ll get to that. These streets made room. And literature flourished. I begin this literary day slightly off-topic, to the west of Las Letras, but with reason. Ramón Valle-Inclán wrote his 1920 critique of Spain’s monarchy in play form, fueled by fried dough, “cacao… bread of the gods,” and long nights below Chocolatería San Ginés. They say this place is for tourists, but it’s been tucked into an alley off Puerta del Sol, next to a church of the same name since 1894. I follow a pair of nuns to a second, smaller counter with less neon, …

Mbappe says he is fourth-choice forward under Arbeloa at Real Madrid

Mbappe says he is fourth-choice forward under Arbeloa at Real Madrid

May 15 : France captain Kylian Mbappe said he is now the fourth-choice forward at Real Madrid after manager Alvaro Arbeloa left him out of the starting line-up for their 2-0 win over Real Oviedo on Thursday. The Frenchman, who missed Sunday’s 2-0 defeat by Barcelona and was booed by his own fans on his return from a hamstring injury, came off the bench in the 68th minute after Arbeloa opted to play Vinicius Junior and Gonzalo Garcia in attack. Mbappe told reporters fitness was not an issue. “I’m 100 per cent fine. I haven’t played because for the coach I’ve been the fourth striker in the squad behind (Franco) Mastantuono, Vini and Gonzalo,” he said. “I was ready to start, it’s his decision and it always has to be respected. “I have no problem at all with Arbeloa. You have to accept the coach’s philosophy and I have to do better to play ahead of Vini, Gonzalo and Mastantuono.” Mbappe has faced criticism from fans for travelling to Sardinia while recovering from his injury, …

Kostyuk’s lucky shorts steal the show after Madrid triumph

Kostyuk’s lucky shorts steal the show after Madrid triumph

MADRID, May 2 : Marta Kostyuk’s maiden WTA 1000 title in Madrid came thanks to her power, poise and a pair of unexpected “Lucky Shorts”. The world number 23 beat eighth-ranked Mirra Andreeva 6-3 7-5 in under 90 minutes on Saturday to secure the most prestigious trophy of her career, her third professional singles title and second in less than a month after Rouen. Yet as the 23-year-old Ukrainian posed for photographs at the Caja Magica, it was not just the silverware that caught the eye. Held alongside her team and her two dogs, Kostyuk showed off a piece of black men’s underwear, prompting raised eyebrows and plenty of laughter. “We have a tournament laundry service and sometimes the clothes get mixed up and last year we ended up with this piece of underwear where in it was written ‘Lucky Shorts’. So we kept it,” Kostyuk told Spanish broadcaster Movistar Plus. “My coach Sandra (Zaniewska) kept it as a lucky charm. “She drove to her father’s house just to pick it up before traveling here …

Sabalenka battles past Osaka in Madrid epic to reach quarter-finals

Sabalenka battles past Osaka in Madrid epic to reach quarter-finals

MADRID, April 27 : World number one Aryna Sabalenka roared back from a set down to beat Naomi Osaka 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2 in a pulsating Madrid Open clash on Monday, keeping her title defence alive. The Belarusian, a three-times champion in the Spanish capital and winner last year, weathered an early storm from former world number one Osaka before asserting her authority in a contest that lasted two hours 22 minutes. It was only the third meeting between the pair who have won four Grand Slams each — the previous encounters coming at Indian Wells this season and nearly eight years ago when Osaka beat Sabalenka at the 2018 U.S. Open. A nervy, finely balanced first set went to a tiebreak. Osaka, serving first, edged ahead as Sabalenka misfired at the net and the Japanese produced a sharp counterattack to seize control. Osaka raced into a 5-0 lead, and wrapped up the breaker 7-1 to take the set 7-6. Osaka was close to flawless from the baseline in the opener, firing deep, flat groundstrokes that …

Picasso’s Guernica Could Leave Madrid for First Time in Over 30 Years

Picasso’s Guernica Could Leave Madrid for First Time in Over 30 Years

The Basque regional government has formally asked Spain’s Ministry of Culture to authorize a temporary loan of Pablo Picasso‘s Guernica to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, according to Ara, a Catalan-language newspaper. If the move is approved, it would mark the first time the painting has traveled since it was installed at Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía in 1992. The proposed transfer would take place between October 2026 and June 2027, coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the bombing of Guernica, the Basque city whose destruction by Nazi and Italian Fascist air forces on April 26, 1937, inspired Picasso to paint the antiwar canvas. Now in Its 45th Edition, Arco Madrid Follows Its Own Measured Tempo

Now in Its 45th Edition, Arco Madrid Follows Its Own Measured Tempo

The 45th edition of Arco Madrid, which runs until Sunday, March 8, opened under an unseasonably cloudy Madrileño sky—an atmospheric departure for a fair more often associated with early spring brightness. Inside IFEMA Madrid, the city’s sprawling exhibition and convention complex, a second surprise awaited. Despite bringing together 211 galleries from 30 countries, the fair floor did not immediately hum with its usual intensity. At the entrance to the first booths in sight, waiters and waitresses lined up with trays of champagne glasses and pastel de nata, ready to greet collectors and VIPs. But by 10 am, the aisles remained relatively uncrowded and unusually navigable. “It’s kind of empty, which surprises me,” said an exhibitor who asked to remain anonymous. “We have been coming for 20 years to Arco, and this morning proves to be particularly slow.” Source link
