Let’s commemorate D-day – but not how Nigel Farage wants us to | Luke Turner

Nigel Farage launched his campaign to become Clacton’s MP by citing a recent survey that revealed more than half of 18- to 34-year-olds couldn’t correctly identify what happened on D-day. Praising a local veteran travelling to Normandy for the 80th anniversary commemorations, the Reform party boss described the poll as representing “a complete failure of the education system … as if we’re telling our youngsters to be ashamed of our past”. It formed a key part of a speech full of supposedly patriotic, anti-immigrant, anti-trans rhetoric. A narrow, nostalgic view of the second world war that connects the conflict with culture war issues and a sense of contemporary British decline is frequently exploited by reactionaries such as Farage, both as a political tool and a stick with which to beat supposedly ignorant young people. Jibes that millennials and Gen Z are “too woke” to fight might in fact be familiar to anyone who has read letters between British commanders of the second world war. General Montgomery, one of the architects of the D-day invasion, wrote …

Newton plays Colin Bridgerton, and season three will feature his friends-to-lovers story with Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan. Page, who played season one’s Simon Hastings, told Newton to go on a “big holiday before all the madness starts,” Newton told InStyle. “[Regé] sort of grabbed me, gave me a big hug and was like, ‘Are you ready for this, bro?’ Johnny’s been there kind of the whole way for me,” he said. While Page left the show after his season, Bailey, who plays the Bridgerton family head and Colin’s eldest brother Anthony Bridgerton, continues to reprise his role on the show—and seems to do so off-screen as well. “We talk all the time, …

Luke Skywalker backs Sadiq Khan in London mayor race – POLITICO

Announcing his support on X, Mark Hamill said: “I LOVE London! Lived there for years while filming & our first child was born there, in St. John’s Wood. I wholeheartedly support Sadiq Khan for Mayor on May 2.” Hamill praised Khan — who has drawn local flak and heated protests for a controversial charge on polluting vehicles — as “a driving force in cleaning up London’s air & choosing #HopeOverFear.” Londoners go to the polls Thursday in London’s mayoral election. Khan’s facing Conservative challenger Susan Hall and bidding for a second term in office. Opinion polls suggest Khan is the frontrunner. Hamill’s endorsement of the Labour incumbent could come as a blow to Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a self-confessed fan of the long-running sci-fi franchise. Sunak even keeps a collection of lightsabers in Downing Street, and has spoken of his desire to make a cameo in the films. He’s not alone. Khan’s predecessor as mayor, Boris Johnson, also declared himself a “massive” fan, revealing in 2015 that he owns a villainous Count Dooku lightsaber. …

‘Bridgerton’s Luke Newton on the Advice Regé-Jean Page and Jonathan Bailey Have Given Him (Exclusive)

‘Bridgerton’s Luke Newton on the Advice Regé-Jean Page and Jonathan Bailey Have Given Him (Exclusive)

Luke Newton is all for taking words of wisdom from his Bridgerton co-stars. When ET’s Cassie DiLaura visited the set of the hit Netflix series, she chatted with the actor behind Colin Bridgerton, whose relationship with Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) will take center stage in season 3. The show’s first two seasons followed the love stories of Colin’s siblings, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), as they fell for Simon (Regé-Jean Page) and Kate (Simone Ashley), respectively. In the wake of the successful seasons, the actors behind the main characters were shot into superstardom, something Newton admitted is hard “to even think about.” “I think, at the moment, I’m so tunnel vision within the show. I couldn’t see anything outside of it,” Newton told ET, before sharing that he sought advice from the previous leading men. “I checked in with Regé recently and I speak to Johnny all the time. It’s kind of like passing down the knowledge of what it’s like to kind of front the show,” he said. “It’s just amazing to see what everyone on …

Journalistic Self-Censorship? | Luke Harding

Journalistic Self-Censorship? | Luke Harding

To the Editors: The conditions experienced by foreign journalists in Russia worsened well before Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I arrived in Moscow as The Guardian’s bureau chief in 2007, two decades after Jonathan Steele [“The Party Line,” NYR, March 21] did the same job for the same British newspaper. Within months, unpromising young men in black leather jackets followed me in the street. There was a series of demonstrative break-ins at our family apartment. We were bugged, the UK embassy advised. The FSB—the main domestic successor to the KGB—summoned me for an interview in Lefortovo, the Moscow pretrial detention center where the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich is currently incarcerated. Under Putin, Soviet-style methods of intimidation came back. In 2011 the Kremlin deported me from the country. It subsequently expelled other reporters, and as Steele correctly says, most US and UK newspapers have now exited Russia. This gloomy experience is in contrast to Ukraine, where correspondents are free to report, to live, and to travel. Steele claims that there may be more …

Luke Bryan Comforts Ryan Seacrest After Emotional ‘American Idol’ Performance

Ryan Seacrest got some big support from Luke Bryan, following an emotional performance on American Idol. On Sunday, Emmy Russell took the stage as part of the Top 20 performances, and belted out her original tune, “Want Me.”  Russell’s heartbreaking song delivered the lyrics, “I want you to want me, like I want you/I want you to need me, like I need you/If you’re gonna leave me, then cut me loose/I want you to want me.” At the end of the performance, which was met with a standing ovation from the audience, and her fellow contestants, Seacrest runs to the stage visibly emotional. “I’m crying,” he tells Russell, who asks if he really is. “Yes.”  Emmy Russell brought Ryan Seacrest to tears with a performance of her original song. – Disney/Eric McCandless Katy Perry interjects, “Ryan do you want somebody to want you like that too?” “Love me,” Seacrest hilariously exclaims. “Love me like I love you.”  Before he can speak to Russell, Luke Bryan gets out of his seat at the judges’ table and heads …
