Crews battle fire threatening longest wooden pier on US west coast | California

A historic southern California pier caught fire on Thursday, burning for several hours until firefighters battling the blaze from boats were able to extinguish the flames. Flames tore through a restaurant at the end of the Oceanside Pier, the longest wooden pier on the US west coast, and heavily damaged the closed diner and a neighboring business. Crews worked through the night to extinguish the blaze and limit its spread to the far west end of the pier, the city said in a statement. They removed some planks across the structure to protect the rest of the pier. Pier fire update: Crews worked through the night and will continue to work today. The unstable restaurant structure means crews can’t attack the fire from inside, so the fight will continue from the exterior. pic.twitter.com/ty2IJEu6fQ — Oceanside Fire Department (@Oceanside_Fire) April 26, 2024 The pier in Oceanside, about 40 miles (64km) north of San Diego, stretches more than 1,900ft (579 meters), allowing visitors to walk out over the ocean waves. The fire started at a vacant restaurant …

Scientists in India may just have discovered longest snake to ever live

Scientists in India may just have discovered longest snake to ever live

Scientists in India have discovered a new ancient giant snake that lived around 47 million years ago, reaching lengths of over 15m (50ft), making it one of the largest serpent species ever. The snake has been named Vasuki Indicus after the mythical snake around the neck of the Hindu deity Shiva. Fossil remains of the snake were recovered in the western state of Gujarat from a lignite mine which dates to the Middle Eocene period about 47 million years ago. Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee in Uttarakhand assessed 27 “mostly well-preserved” vertebrae remains of what appeared to be from a fully-grown snake. The snake’s vertebrae measure between 37.5 and 62.7mm in length, and about 62 and 111mm in width. Scientists estimate that the snake likely reached lengths from 11 to 15m, or about the length of a full-size school bus and comparable in size to the longest known snake to ever live, the extinct Titanoboa. These measurements also suggest that the snake was broad and cylindrical, likely slow-moving, and may have …

My first time at a sound healing: ‘Is this the longest I’ve gone without checking my phone?’ | Australian lifestyle

“We recommend that you can do this experience either with your eyes closed or open – but it’s definitely better with hearts open,” says Mark Coughlan, the conductor of En Coda Symphony Orchestra as we settle in for the group’s hour-long sound-healing session. The man next to me chuckles. It’s a sunny evening and 300 of us – attracted by the promise of a meditative, transportive and therapeutic experience – have gathered inside the Art Gallery of New South Wales for a one-off concert by the Perth-based group, comprising three instrumentalists who perform alongside an ensemble of 13 local string players. Europe’s longest hyperloop test track revives futuristic tube transport hype | Hyperloop

The longest hyperloop test track in Europe has opened, raising faint hopes once more that the maglev meets vacuum tube transport technology could be the future. Operators said the facility would help prove the hyperloop’s feasibility, saying it could allow a 6,200-mile (10,000km) network of high-speed tubes to be in place around the continent by 2050. As it stands, the European Hyperloop Center test bed in Veendam is not so much a loop as a 420-metre-long forked white pipe running alongside the railway and road that must still be used, for now, to transport people around this corner of the Netherlands. Made of 34 interconnected prefabricated 2.5-metre-wide steel cylinders, the partly EU-funded test pipe is somewhat shorter than the 2-mile track envisaged in 2020, and allows speeds of only a fraction of the 620mph (1000km/h) that proponents believe the technology can achieve. Warning as UK faces ‘longest sustained” rise in sickness-related inactivity since 1990s | UK | News

Britain is facing its “longest sustained” rise in sickness-related inactivity since the 1990s, a think tank has warned. A near record of 2.7 million working-age adults are too ill to work, and with increases concentrated among the UK’s youngest and oldest workers, the Resolution Foundation said. Its senior economist Louise Murphy said: “Britain’s labour market is finally returning to normal, but the Covid-19 pandemic has left an alarming legacy of the longest sustained rise in sickness-related inactivity since the 1990s. “As a result, 2.7 million people are now too sick to work. “Younger and older people together account for nine-tenths of the rise in overall economic inactivity, which could have serious effects both on individual’s living standards and career paths, as well as wider strains on the NHS and welfare spending if we fail to improve the nation’s health and reduce economic inactivity.” Economic inactivity because of long-term sickness has increased on an yearly basis since July 2019 – the longest sustained rise since 1994 to 1998. The number of working-age adults economically inactive because …

Longest sustained rise in people too sick to work since 1990s, says thinktank | Economics

Britain is going through the longest sustained rise in the number of working-age adults who are too sick to work since the 1990s, according to a report warning that a benefits crackdown is unlikely to solve the country’s jobless crisis. The Resolution Foundation said economic inactivity due to long-term sickness – when people aged 16-64 are neither in work nor looking for a job because of a health condition – had increased in each year since July 2019, the longest sustained rise since 1994 to 1998. The thinktank warned that a near-record 2.7 million working-age adults were too sick to work, with the biggest increase since the Covid pandemic concentrated among the UK’s youngest and oldest workers. Highlighting the legacy of the pandemic as the British economy struggles with chronic workforce shortages, it said the UK was the only G7 country with a lower rate of employment than before the health emergency. However, the report showed the upward trend in long-term sickness had started before the pandemic struck in the summer of 2019, and had …

The world’s longest train ride through 13 countries that costs the same as a plane ticket | World | News

“I have seldom heard a train go by and not wished I was on it,” wrote Paul Theroux in his seminal work of travel literature, The Great Railway Bazaar. It is a feeling shared by many around the world: there is something hypnotic about the slow, rhythmic chugging motion a locomotive provides. Such is its pull that travellers for many years have planned entire trips based on how many slow trains they can take from Point A to Point B. Bucket lists are filled with the journeys: the Reunification Express, the Lake Titicaca Train, and the Trans-Siberian Express, to name a few, each holds its own special mythology and lore. Now, train travel enthusiasts have yet another mammoth journey they can look forward to, tipped to be the world’s longest, that takes revellers from Portugal all the way to Singapore. The loose itinerary estimates that the journey takes around 21 days, but when timetables and disruptions are taken into consideration, coupled with stop-offs in cities and towns along the way, the real journey would likely …

The insanely long £15bn bridge 34 miles in length that’s the world’s longest sea crossing | World | News

A marvel of modern construction, China’s Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is 34 miles long and cost £14.8billion to build. It crosses the Lingdingyang channel in the Pearl River Estuary and holds the record as the longest bridge-tunnel system sea crossing in the world. The crossing is made up of the 7.4 mile (12km) Hong Kong Link Road, 18.3 mile (29.6km) Main Bridge and 8.3 mile (13.4km) Zhuhai Link Road. Open 24 hours a day, HZMB connects major cities in the Pearl River Delta to Hong Kong. It takes just 40 minutes to cover the roughly 26-mile (42km) distance from Hong Kong Port to Zhuhai Port and Macao Port. The structure’s viaduct section consists of three cable-stayed bridges: Qingzhou Channel Bridge, Jianghai Channel Bridge and Jiuzhou Channel Bridge. Between the three, the Qingzhou Channel Bridge has the longest main span, at about 458m long. Jianghai Channel Bridge’s steel tower weighs about 3,100 tonnes. The steel used for the bridge’s decks totals 420,000 tonnes, which is equivalent to the weight of 60 Eiffel Towers. The total bridge deck …

The world’s longest onshore wind turbine blade makes its debut

The world’s longest onshore wind turbine blade makes its debut

Photo: SANY Group SANY Renewable Energy, a wind turbine manufacturer in China, has built the world’s longest onshore wind turbine blade. The SY1310A is 430 feet (131 meters) long and rolled off the assembly line on January 21 at SANY’s zero-carbon, smart industrial park in Bayannur, Inner Mongolia. That means these giants sport a diameter that stretches over 860 feet (262 meters) – the scale of the length of almost three football fields. But making something this massive was about more than just scaling up. It’s super strong, smarter, and lighter than others in its league, with a specially designed anti-lightning feature to withstand extreme weather. SANY used such cutting-edge tech as high-performance design of the airfoil – that’s the cross-sectional shape of the blade – optimized airfoil layout, and manufacturing processes that include robotics for precision fiberglass cutting and a unique technique for creating large composite blades. The world’s longest onshore wind turbine blade will be attached to the company’s 15-megawatt (MW) wind turbine unit, which debuted at the China Wind Power 2023 exhibition …
