David Lewis on Mounting a Thornton Dial Exhibition at Hauser & Wirth

Editor’s Note: This story is part of Newsmakers, a new ARTnews series where we interview the movers and shakers who are making change in the art world. Next month, Hauser & Wirth will mount an exhibition dedicated to Thornton Dial, one of the late 20th-century’s most important artists. Dial created works in a variety of modes of allegorical paintings to massive assemblages. At its 542 West 22nd Street space in Chelsea, Hauser & Wirth will show eight large-scale works by Dial, ranging from 1988 to 2011. Related Articles The exhibition is organized by David Lewis, who recently joined Hauser & Wirth as senior director after running a taste-making Lower East Side gallery for more than a decade. Titled “The Visible and Invisible,” the exhibition, which opens November 2, looks at how Dial’s art is on its surface a visual and aesthetic feast. Below the surface, these works tackle some of the most important issues in the contemporary art world, namely who get canonized and who doesn’t. Lewis first began working with Dial’s estate in 2018, two years after the …

‘Nobody can be entirely impartial’: Lewis Goodall on poverty, politics and the BBC | Politics

It’s a Monday lunchtime in July, and barely 72 hours have passed since the general election results rolled in. On TV screens and live-feeds, the political press pack is exhausted. Not Lewis Goodall. He’s fresh-faced, talking fast, buzzing. “It’s been a slog,” he says, “but this is my Christmas. I hate this journalist tendency to moan about how tired we are. The pace of news is relentless, but only up to a point. It’s not like working down a bloody mine or even being an actual politician.” We’re meeting at a pub behind Oxford Circus. He’s dressed down: tricolour cord shirt, stone-washed jeans and trainers. Goodall is 35. His wife, Tone Langengen, a net-zero specialist at Tony Blair’s Institute for Global Change, recently turned 30. “We were due to go on holiday to celebrate,” Goodall says, “but then Rishi called the election and it was deferred.” On the floor, a small suitcase is nestled next to him. “We managed to get to Margate for a night yesterday. But otherwise it’s been nonstop.” Election day itself …

Will Lewis Is Said to Have Used Stolen Records as Editor in U.K.

Will Lewis Is Said to Have Used Stolen Records as Editor in U.K.

The publisher and the incoming editor of The Washington Post, when they worked as journalists in London two decades ago, used fraudulently obtained phone and company records in newspaper articles, according to a former colleague, a published account of a private investigator and an analysis of newspaper archives. Will Lewis, The Post’s publisher, assigned one of the articles in 2004 as business editor of The Sunday Times. Another was written by Robert Winnett, whom Mr. Lewis recently announced as The Post’s next executive editor. The use of deception, hacking and fraud is at the heart of a long-running British newspaper scandal, one that toppled a major tabloid in 2010 and led to years of lawsuits by celebrities who said that reporters improperly obtained their personal documents and voice mail messages. Mr. Lewis has maintained that his only involvement in the controversy was helping to root out problematic behavior after the fact, while working for Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. But a former Sunday Times reporter said on Friday that Mr. Lewis had personally assigned him to …

Lewis Hamilton accused of ‘ruining a lot of people’s races’ as nightmare season continues

Given he could not serve it as the race was over, that converted into a 20-second post-race time penalty, dropping Hamilton to P16. Ironically one place ahead of Alonso. Hamilton’s team-mate George Russell did not have much more fun than Hamilton, getting stuck in a DRS train and finishing 12th having started 11th. At the front of the race, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen held off Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with a minimum of fuss to extend his lead in the drivers’ championship. “Well done, Max. First win of the weekend done,” commented his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase after the chequered flag dropped, barely concealing the team’s expectation that Verstappen will make it a double in Sunday’s main feature race. The drive of the day, though, arguably belonged to RB’s Daniel Ricciardo, who enjoyed his best result of the season so far, finishing fourth in the Sprint behind the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez but ahead of the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, whom Ricciardo frustrated with a brilliant defensive display. “Let’s go baby whoooooo!” the …

Boy, 15, found guilty of murdering teenager Alfie Lewis | UK News

A 15-year-old boy has been found guilty of the murder of teenager Alfie Lewis. Alfie, 15, was stabbed to death in front of pupils leaving a primary school in the Horsforth area of Leeds last November. A teenager – who cannot be named – admitted stabbing Alfie with a 13cm-long knife he had brought from home, but denied murder and claimed he was acting in self-defence when he pulled out the blade. When the verdict was announced, sobs could be heard from Alfie’s family in the public gallery at Leeds Crown Court. Most of them were wearing T-shirts with pictures of him and the words “Forever 15” on them. Image: Alfie Lewis The defendant showed no visible emotion. Before being taken away, he held hands with his parents through a gap in the dock glass. He will be sentenced on 21 June. Judge Mr Justice Cotter told him: “You have been found guilty of murder. There is only one sentence I can pass. What I have to determine is how many years you will be …

Former John Lewis distribution centre in East Sussex sold

A large warehouse distribution centre in East Sussex, formerly occupied by John Lewis Partnership (JLP), has been let. Unit 4, Ashdown Business Park is a high-spec 50,664 sq ft warehouse premises on a 3.3-acre site at Maresfield, near Uckfield. Property consultancy Vail Williams acted for JLP on the letting for the property, which was deemed surplus to requirements and closed in 2022. Vail Williams worked with landlord LondonMetric Property plc to market and assign JLP’s lease. However, following significant interest, a deal was struck on basis of a lease surrender by JLP and grant of a new 15-year lease on an improved market rent of just under £10 per sq ft with CPI reviews. Designed and built for JLP in 2016 as a regional distributional hub, the detached, self-contained distribution warehouse has 21 loading doors, a large servicing yard, high quality office accommodation and parking for 93 vehicles. Steve Berrett, partner in Vail Williams’ Gatwick region, said: “We’re thrilled to have completed this transaction, not only for John Lewis, but also for the landlord. “We …
