Closure of Gaza’s only route out leaves boy, 10, with no treatment for cancer

Closure of Gaza’s only route out leaves boy, 10, with no treatment for cancer

GAZA: Siraj Yassin, 10, is rolled into the overcrowded Gaza hospital ward in his wheelchair, his light green T-shirt dwarfing his skinny frame since the leukaemia in his blood wrecked his immune system, sapped his strength and left him unable to walk. Chemotherapy would help him, his doctors say. But he can’t get it here in Gaza, and he can’t get out of the enclave for treatment now that Israeli forces have shut the only exit through the Rafah crossing into Egypt. “Two weeks ago, I stopped being able to walk. Every day my condition gets worse and I lose something,” the boy said. “My bones hurt and everything hurts. I wish to leave Gaza so I can receive the treatment and be able to play like I used to.” Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital is one of the only hospitals still functioning in Gaza, where most of the medical system has been destroyed by Israel’s eight-month-old assault. Residents flock here for basic medical treatment, in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, the last city that …

Victoria Derbyshire Leaves Minister Squirming As She Explains Why Young People Don’t Vote Tory

AFP Putin warns of ‘serious consequences’ if Western arms strike Russia President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that there would be “serious consequences” if Western countries allowed Ukraine to use their weapons to strike targets in Russia, as sought by Kyiv. The warning came as French President Emmanuel Macron said Kyiv should be allowed to “neutralise” Russian military bases from where Kremlin troops are firing missiles into Ukraine, and as President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the world not to tire of the war.Putin’s comments came after some NATO members as well as the alliance’s chief Jens Stoltenberg have called to allow Ukraine to use their arms to step up attacks on Russian soil, after more than two years of war.”This constant escalation can lead to serious consequences,” Putin said during a visit to Uzbekistan.”In Europe, especially in small countries, they should be aware of what they are playing with,” he said, noting that many European countries had “small territory” and a “dense population”.”And this factor, which they should keep in mind before they talk about striking deep into …

‘TunnelVision’ Attack Leaves Nearly All VPNs Vulnerable to Spying

‘TunnelVision’ Attack Leaves Nearly All VPNs Vulnerable to Spying

Researchers have devised an attack against nearly all virtual private network applications that forces them to send and receive some or all traffic outside of the encrypted tunnel designed to protect it from snooping or tampering. TunnelVision, as the researchers have named their attack, largely negates the entire purpose and selling point of VPNs, which is to encapsulate incoming and outgoing Internet traffic in an encrypted tunnel and to cloak the user’s IP address. The researchers believe it affects all VPN applications when they’re connected to a hostile network and that there are no ways to prevent such attacks except when the user’s VPN runs on Linux or Android. They also said their attack technique may have been possible since 2002 and may already have been discovered and used in the wild since then. Reading, Dropping, or Modifying VPN Traffic The effect of TunnelVision is that “the victim’s traffic is now decloaked and being routed through the attacker directly,” a video demonstration explained. “The attacker can read, drop or modify the leaked traffic and the …

Prince Harry leaves UK without having met his father or brother in a devastating snub | Royal | News

Prince Harry is jetting off to join Meghan Markle after a fleeting UK visit, amidst Royal Family tensions. The Duke of Sussex has bid farewell to the UK, setting off to reunite with his wife Meghan without having met his father or his brother. Harry is bound for Nigeria, where he and Meghan are scheduled for a tour at the invitation of the West African nation’s chief of defence staff, who Harry encountered last September at the Invictus Games Dusseldorf in Germany. The Duke made headlines in London on Wednesday as he celebrated a decade of the Invictus Games at St Paul’s Cathedral, while just a stone’s throw away, Charles presided over a garden party at Buckingham Palace. However, the King reportedly had no time to meet his son due to a packed schedule of royal duties, as confirmed by a statement earlier this week which highlighted that a father-son rendezvous was off the table owing to the monarch’s crammed calendar. The 39-year-old Duke also missed the chance to catch up with his elder sibling, …

DWP’s unchecked database leaves tens of thousands of carers at risk of debt | Carers

DWP’s unchecked database leaves tens of thousands of carers at risk of debt | Carers

Tens of thousands of unpaid carers are at risk of debt and criminal prosecution because their cases are lying unchecked on a government “alert” database of people being overpaid benefits, according to new figures. Officials are aware of the mounting number of instances where UK carers are at risk of racking up overpayments that can in some cases lead to crippling debt, but for the past five years have chosen not to investigate all cases.. Overpayments happen when someone who claims £81 a week carer’s allowance, often for looking after a frail, disabled or ill relative, breaches a strict government-imposed earning cap, which means they cannot earn more than £151 a week in a paid job. If the carer breaches that limit, even by a penny, their whole allowance is deemed to be an overpayment, which the DWP forces them to repay, and in some cases also takes them to court. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been accused of “burying its head in the sand” after it emerged ministers put in place …

Apple’s New iPad Ad Leaves Its Creative Audience Feeling … Flat

Apple’s New iPad Ad Leaves Its Creative Audience Feeling … Flat

The trumpet is the first thing to be squished. Then the industrial compressor flattens a row of paint cans, buckles a piano and levels what appears to be a marble bust. In a final act of destruction, it pops the eyes out of a ball-shaped yellow emoji. When the compressor rises, it reveals Apple’s latest commodity: the updated iPad Pro. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, posted the advertisement, called “Crush,” on Tuesday after the company held an event to announce new tablets. “Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created,” Mr. Cook wrote, adding, “Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create.” For decades, Apple has been the toast of the creative class. It has won over designers, musicians and film editors with promises that its products would help them “Think Different.” But some creators took a different message from the one-minute iPad ad. Rather than seeing a device that could help them create, as Mr. Cook suggested, they saw a metaphor for how Big Tech has cashed in on …

Natalie Robyn, FIA’s first female chief executive, leaves post after 18 months | Formula One

Natalie Robyn is leaving Formula One’s governing body after serving just 18 months as its first chief executive, the FIA said on Wednesday. Robyn was one of the most senior female executives in motorsport and her arrival from the auto industry was hailed by the sport’s governing body, the FIA, as a “transformative moment” for an organisation led by Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem, from the United Arab Emirates, highlighted Robyn’s appointment as proof of his commitment to equality and diversity after a controversy over remarks he had once made about women “who think they are smarter than men”. The governing body said Robyn had decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere and was leaving by mutual agreement at the end of May. “Performing in the role of CEO at the FIA has been an enormous privilege and I am grateful to have directed a programme of restructuring and reform,” she was quoted as saying. “Now is the time to step away in the knowledge that the organisation is better placed for the challenges which lie ahead.” …
