WSL roundup: Mead double in Arsenal win; Man City hit seven past Tottenham | Women’s Super League

Beth Mead scored twice as Arsenal thumped struggling West Ham 3-0 at Meadow Park in the Women’s Super League. It did not take long for Arsenal to open the scoring as Frida Maanum put the hosts 1-0 up just two minutes in and Mead got her first since returning from injury in the 18th minute before she tapped in from six yards to make it 3-0 just before the break. Jonas Eidevall’s team sit in second position and continue to pile pressure on the league leaders Chelsea, who stretched their winning run to six games in the league with a 5-2 win against Leicester. In Sunday’s late kick-off, Manchester City thrashed Tottenham 7-0 with Khadija Shaw scoring a first-half hat-trick before Laura Coombs came off the bench to net a late double. City built on a fast start as Shaw headed home a 23rd-minute opener before two more well-taken goals in the space of six minutes ripped Spurs apart as their eight-match unbeaten run was left in tatters. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed …

The most frustrating United player I can recall. Skillful, bone idle, great finisher, injury prone. In the unlikely event he gets a testimonial, has the brass neck to accept and is fit to appear, I’ll be crying off attending due to a knock. It’s what he wouid have wanted.” The big news for Manchester United fans is Kobie Mainoo getting a long-awaited firsty Premier League start; he starred on the club’s pre-season star and then broke down with injury. Luke Shaw is back at left-back, and Anthony Martial, just 18 months short of his United testimonial – Shaw’s is next year – starts in place of the injured Rasmus Hojlund.. I’d seriously question that, guys, with all due respect to Leicester. Suzanne Wrack caught up with the WSL’s form player before this weekend. It’s all eyes on Beth Mead at Meadow Park, after her inclusion in an England squad for the first time in more than a year, following the ACL injury that ruled her out of the World Cup. She’ll be back in Sarina Wiegman’s team for December’s Nations League fixtures against Scotland and the Netherlands. Mead’s blossoming relationship with Alessia Russo at Arsenal is one for Wiegman to monitor. It’s worked wonders so far this season for Jonas Eidevall’s team, who trail leaders Chelsea by just three points going into today’s games. Kai Havertz springs to life and floors Brentford to send Arsenal top | Premier League

Whatever happens to Arsenal this season, Mikel Arteta will know that this victory courtesy of substitute Kai Havertz’s late header could be priceless. A lacklustre display against a committed Brentford that had seen Aaron Ramsdale endure a shaky return between the posts looked like ending in disappointment as the game ticked into the 89th minute. But after a testing start to his career in north London, Havertz ensured his place in Arsenal folklore when he ghosted in at the far post to steer home Bukayo Saka’s cross. The victory means Arteta’s side go top of the table for the first time this season, with the manager pumping his fist at the final whistle after a testing evening that had frayed the nerves of his goalkeeper in particular. With David Raya ineligible to face his parent club, Ramsdale made his first appearance since the start of September in the Premier League as Arsenal also welcomed back Gabriel Jesus and Martin Ødegaard to their starting line-up for the first time in five weeks. Manchester City’s draw against …

Pep Guardiola: I won’t resign if Manchester City are relegated to League One | Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has stated he is a “big fan” of financial fair play and that clubs who break its rules must be punished, despite Manchester City facing more than 100 charges of contravening the Premier League’s regulations. After Everton were deducted 10 points for a single breach of the league’s profit and sustainability rules, there has been speculation that if City’s charges are proven they may face more serious action, including relegation. City deny wrongdoing and Guardiola said on Friday he would not walk out on his contract, which runs to the end of next season, even if they were demoted to League One. FFP is designed to limit spending and prevent clubs from experiencing serious financial difficulty. Yet there is a view that this potentially stops any rich entity from investing in a club to bring it to a higher level. Guardiola was asked whether, in view of this, he agreed with FFP. “They decided to bring a regulation to make football more equal and laws must be respected,” he said. “We are under …
