Learn more about GamesBeat Summit sponsorship opportunities here.  Build A Rocket Boy has laid off an undetermined number of staff, just a little more than a month after announcing it had raised $110 million. It’s an unfortunate move and will likely draw a lot of heat, as game workers are getting increasingly upset at mass layoffs in the industry. So far, 6,000 have been laid off in 2024, on top of 10,500 in 2023. At the recent Dice Awards, the subject of layoffs came up multiple times on stage. Leslie Benzies, a former producer at Rockstar North, started the company in 2018. Benzies was one of the key leaders at Rockstar on Grand Theft Auto V. Build A Rocket Boy announced in 2022 that it was making a game called Everywhere, which is an ambitious life simulator. In a statement, a spokesperson for the company said, “While we have made great progress developing our products, we are now in a …

Paramount Global lays off about 800 employees, a day after announcing record Super Bowl ratings

Paramount Global is laying off hundreds of employees, just one day after the company announced CBS had record Super Bowl viewership, Chief Executive Officer Bob Bakish said Tuesday in an internal memo to employees. Paramount will lay off about 800 people, or an estimated 3% of its workforce, according to a person familiar with the matter. Paramount Global ended 2022 with about 24,500 full-time and part-time employees. Affected workers will be notified Tuesday, Bakish said in the note. “These adjustments will help enable us to build on our momentum and execute our strategic vision for the year ahead — and I firmly believe we have much to be excited about,” Bakish wrote in the note. Paramount shares fell about 4% in morning trading Tuesday. Deadline first reported the number of cuts in January. Paramount Global owns a variety of assets including CBS, Paramount Pictures, Pluto TV, Paramount+ and cable networks including Nickelodeon, BET and Comedy Central. The job cuts come as the media company considers merger and acquisition options. Paramount Global has held early merger talks with Skydance Media and …

Argylle’s Henry Cavill Lays Out Why He’s ‘Not A Fan’ Of Sex Scenes

Argylle’s Henry Cavill Lays Out Why He’s ‘Not A Fan’ Of Sex Scenes

Henry Cavill has joined the discourse surrounding a particularly controversial topic — sex scenes in film and TV. The Argylle actor unfavourably weighed in on the topic after filmmaker Matthew Vaughn brought it up during an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that was released on Monday. “[I] don’t understand them, I’m not a fan,” Henry said. “I think there are circumstances where a sex scene actually is beneficial to a movie, rather than just the audience. But I think sometimes they’re overused these days.” “You’re going, ‘Is this really necessary or is it people just with less clothing on?’” he added. “And that’s where you start to get more uncomfortable. “You’re thinking, ‘There’s not a performance here … which is going to carry through into the rest of the movie.’” Although Henry ultimately agreed that sex scenes “can be great” and “really help with the storytelling,” he said he still prefers a less-is-more approach when it comes to them. “Most of the time the human imagination is going to trump it,” he said. …

Rudy Giuliani lays bare his finances in bankruptcy hearing

Rudy Giuliani lays bare his finances in bankruptcy hearing

Rudy Giuliani appears outside bankruptcy court in Manhattan on 7 February (Alex Woodward/The Independent) Flanked by two attorneys at a desk in a small conference room, Rudy Giuliani sat through a federal bankruptcy court hearing that often felt more like a free-wheeling, wide-ranging interview about his financial affairs than a court’s probe to determine how, exactly, he can dig himself out. The hearing near Manhattan’s Wall Street on Wednesday was steps away from Cipriani, the venue where the former New York City mayor and one-time attorney for Donald Trump joined the former president and loyalists in December to launch his 2024 campaign. Less than two months later, Mr Giuliani was on the fifth floor of a bankruptcy court down the street, where he testified for the first time about his strained financial state after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the wake of a nearly $150m defamation judgment for his election lies. The hearing combed through dozens of pages of financial statements, including potential impacts from pending lawsuits for defamation and other allegations that could …

NASA lays off 530 workers at Jet Propulsion Lab, endangering future space missions

NASA lays off 530 workers at Jet Propulsion Lab, endangering future space missions

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said in a memo Tuesday that it is laying off approximately 570 workers because it still does not have a federally approved budget for the 2024 fiscal year for its Mars Sample Return mission. JPL Director Laurie Leshin said the lack of Congressional appropriations has also endangered the agency’s (MSR) missions. 530 staff employees will be cut, accounting for about 8% of the lab’s workforce, along with 40 contractors. The announcement follows a wave of previous contractor cuts earlier in the month. The JPL said it dealt with a lack of funding approval ahead of the Tuesday layoffs by anticipating a 63% decrease from its FY2023 MSR budget (roughly consistent with Congressional markups), per NASA direction, and cutting costs elsewhere: a hiring freeze, reduced MSR contracts, and cuts to internal “burden budgets.”  “Unfortunately, those actions alone are not enough for us to make it through the remainder of the fiscal year. So in the absence of an appropriation, and as much as we wish we didn’t need to take this action, we …

King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis lays bare pressures at Buckingham Palace

King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis lays bare pressures at Buckingham Palace

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis heaps more pressure on the British monarchy, which is still evolving after the 70-year reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II. When he succeeded his mother 17 months ago, Charles’ task was to demonstrate that the 1,000-year-old institution remains relevant in a modern nation whose citizens come from all corners of the globe. Now the king, who turned 75 in November, will have to lead that effort while undergoing cancer treatment. Buckingham Palace announced Monday that Charles had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer. The king plans to continue fulfilling his state duties, such as reviewing government papers and meeting with the prime minister, but he will step back from public appearances. While royal experts say the diagnosis is unlikely to destabilize the House of Windsor, significant pressures remain. Here is a look at the major challenges facing the royal family. AGING MONARCH Charles waited almost 74 years — longer than any previous heir — to become king. Now, at an age when most of …

EU lays out plan to cut greenhouse emissions by 90% by 2040 | Greenhouse gas emissions

EU lays out plan to cut greenhouse emissions by 90% by 2040 | Greenhouse gas emissions

The EU aims to slash its net greenhouse gas pollution by 90% by 2040 as part of its push to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent, the European Commission has announced before elections in June. Under a landmark proposal laid out by its executive body on Tuesday, the bloc will have to pump 90% less planet-heating gas into the air by 2040 than it did in 1990, a figure which includes the carbon it removes from the atmosphere. The target is at the bottom end of the 90-95% net cuts that the EU’s scientific watchdog recommended in June, and meeting it would require a much faster shift to a clean economy. In the three decades between 1990 and 2021, the EU’s 27 member states cut their emissions by just 30%, according to the European Environment Agency, leaving them half as long to do twice the work. Wopke Hoekstra, the EU climate commissioner, said the target sent a message to the world that Europe “continues to lead the way” on climate action. “Tackling the climate crisis …

Snap Lays Off 10% of Its Work Force

Snap, the parent of messaging app Snapchat, on Monday said it would lay off more than 500 employees, joining other tech companies in a wave of new cost-cutting measures. The layoffs amount to 10 percent of its global work force; the majority will occur in the first quarter of 2024. “We have made the difficult decision to restructure our team,” the company said in a securities filing, adding that it would take pretax charges of $55 million to $75 million, primarily for severance and related costs. Amazon, Google and Microsoft have announced layoffs this year, following tens of thousands across the sector last year. Snap laid off a small number of employees on Friday, Business Insider reported. The company is set to report earnings on Tuesday. Cost-cutting measures at other companies have buoyed stock prices. Snap shares were trading about 2 percent lower before the market opened on Monday. Like other social media companies reliant on advertising, Snap has had a rough couple years. Changes by Apple to its privacy policy in 2021 made it …

Microsoft has laid off most of the internal Activision Blizzard esports organization, according to a source familiar with the matter. The layoffs at the internal group are believed to be part of the 1,900 cutbacks in jobs that Microsoft announced last week for its Xbox, Bethesda and Activision Blizzard gaming divisions. In a statement, Activision Blizzard said, “Our esports business is not going away, but we’re being thoughtful about how to evolve to better deliver for our players and fans. With a continued commitment to competitive esports, we have landed on a model that more closely aligns with our game franchises. We’re not stopping esports, instead, we are adapting to a new business model to better serve the community. The people who are directly impacted have all played an important role in the success of our team, and the success of Activision Blizzard. We are grateful for their contributions, and we will …

FAA lays out process for grounded Boeing aircraft to return to service

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Wednesday laid out the process to return the Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft to service after they were grounded earlier this month following a midair blowout during an Alaska Airlines flight. The FAA announced Wednesday it approved a “thorough inspection and maintenance process” that will be performed on each of the 171 grounded Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft. Once this process is complete, the planes will be returned to service, the agency said. “The exhaustive, enhanced review our team completed after several weeks of information gathering gives me and the FAA confidence to proceed to the inspection and maintenance phase,” FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said in a statement. “However, let me be clear: This won’t be back to business as usual for Boeing.” Whitaker explained the FAA will not agree to any further requests for expanded production of the 737 Max aircraft until it is “satisfied” that the quality control issues with the aircraft company are resolved. The maintenance process will include an inspection of “specific bolts, guide tracks …
