Assisted Dying Bill in House of Commons – path now open to compassionate law change

Humanists UK today welcomes the introduction of a private member’s bill on assisted dying by Kim Leadbeater MP, calling it a historic once in a generation opportunity for choice and dignity.  Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of Humanists UK, said: ‘Today marks the historic first step in a journey that should lead to one of the most consequential and compassionate reforms in our history, finally giving thousands of suffering people the choice and dignity they desire and deserve. ‘Parliamentarians will have in front of them vital questions about eligibility, process, and safeguards, that it will be the duty of all of society to help them address. ‘Drawing on our own decades of policy and research in this field, and on the best of the international experience of the 31 legal jurisdictions in the world that are ahead of us, we at Humanists UK look forward to supporting Kim and all legislators with this once-in-a-generation legislation.  ‘Parliament owes it to the many courageous, suffering people who have fought for this change to make sure they consider as …

The ‘Law of the Land’ Has Been Replaced

The ‘Law of the Land’ Has Been Replaced

The Dubai International Financial Center is home to thousands of companies from around the world. Some of them have organic connections to the emirate; others are merely taking advantage of the center’s business-friendly rules and regulations around tax, immigration, and labor. A third group of businesses have chosen the DIFC not for the office space, or the taxes, but as a home base for legal disputes alone. In the event of a lawsuit, the DIFC is where they want to have their day in court. That’s because Dubai’s financial center is not governed by Dubai—at least, not in the way most of us understand governance. The enclave is a special economic zone overseen by a board appointed by the city-state’s ruler, with its own bespoke laws drawn up for the benefit of its clients. The DIFC is also a shimmering shopping center with three hotels, luxury apartment towers, high-end restaurants, clothing stores, spas, beauty salons, and art galleries. There’s even a mosque, open 24/7. The 110-acre compound sits in the shadow of the Gate, a …

Are Sheriffs Above the Law? | Linda Greenhouse

Are Sheriffs Above the Law? | Linda Greenhouse

For many of us who grew up watching the weekly adventures of Robin Hood on a black-and-white television screen, the word “sheriff” conjures the dogged lawman of Nottingham chasing the noble bandit through Sherwood Forest. Today’s most recognizable sheriff may be the rabidly anti-immigrant Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona. Thrown out of office by voters in 2016 after twenty-four years and convicted of criminal contempt for disobeying a court order to stop arresting anyone he suspected might be undocumented, Arpaio was the recipient of President Donald Trump’s first pardon. His outrageous behavior—he once sent a “posse” to Hawaii at taxpayer expense to examine Barack Obama’s birth certificate, which he declared fraudulent—makes it easy to dismiss him as an anomaly. But in The Highest Law in the Land, Jessica Pishko’s eye-opening account of the modern-day American sheriff, Arpaio is less anomaly than symbol, his excesses differing only in degree from those of other sheriffs who wield power less flagrantly but often with no more accountability. Because almost all of the country’s more than three thousand …

Deranged Anti-Abortion Law Will Keep Hospitals From Saving Dying Women, Doctors Say

Deranged Anti-Abortion Law Will Keep Hospitals From Saving Dying Women, Doctors Say

Image by Getty / Futurism In May, the Louisiana state legislature passed an unfathomably stupid and unscientific law that reclassified the increasingly politicized drugs mifepristone and misoprostol, which are in some cases used to induce abortions, as “controlled dangerous substances.” The law was idiotic for a slew of reasons, one of them being that these drugs aren’t just used to terminate unwanted or doomed pregnancies. They’re also used to safely assist women who have miscarried, and in the case of misoprostol, used as a life-saving emergency medicine to treat postpartum hemorrhaging. And now, as a devastating report by the Louisiana Illuminator reveals, Louisiana hospitals are starting to pull misoprostol off their emergency carts due to the drug’s catastrophically dumb new categorization — an entirely avoidable outcome that, doctors warn, could result in women losing their lives. “It is causing a lot of confusion and angst just not understanding, just not knowing,” one OB-GYN, who opted to stay anonymous for the security of her job, told the Illuminator. “They’re still trying to figure out what to do.” …

Climate activists in frame for £1m costs of protest bans run up by UK’s biggest law firm | Environmental activism

Climate activists in frame for £1m costs of protest bans run up by UK’s biggest law firm | Environmental activism

Britain’s biggest law firm has sought more than £1m from climate protesters to cover the cost of court orders banning them from protesting, an investigation has found. The multibillion-pound City law firm DLA Piper has been trying to recover costs from activists for work done on behalf of National Highways Limited (NHL) and HS2 Ltd – both public bodies – obtaining injunctions banning protests on their sites. Courts have so far ordered activists to pay hundreds of thousands of pounds to NHL and HS2 to reimburse them for DLA Piper’s costs. Reporters from the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) scoured court records to collate the sums claimed by DLA Piper to cover costs incurred by the law firm for its clients, which included fees of £350 an hour for providing legal advice, £75,000 for a single hearing and £2,500 for drawing up a document listing its fees. Barristers said costs incurred by City law firms such as DLA Piper far exceeded those incurred by in-house solicitors at public bodies or local authorities, ratcheting up the …

UK charges pro-Palestine group members under terrorism law | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Palestine Action members are accused of burglary, violent disorder at building belonging to Israeli defence firm Elbit. British counterterrorism police have charged seven people with violent disorder over a break-in at a building belonging to Israeli defence firm Elbit in southwest England. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said on Tuesday that seven people, aged between 20 and 51, have been charged with criminal damage, violent disorder and aggravated burglary over an incident at the Elbit Systems premises in South Gloucestershire on August 6. “On the facts of this case, the CPS will be submitting to the court that these offences have a terrorist connection,” the CPS said in a statement. Members of Palestine Action were due to appear at London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court later on Tuesday. Avon and Somerset Police said the group forced its way into the building and “seriously assaulted” staff after smashing the gate with a vehicle and driving into the compound. Palestine Action rejected allegations of violence against police and security staff and said the authorities had launched a “smear campaign” …

School rapped after breaking data law

School rapped after breaking data law

More from this theme Recent articles A school has been rapped by the information watchdog after it illegally used facial recognition on its pupils, prompting a call for leaders to safeguard children’s rights when implementing new technology. The Information Commissioner’s Office has issued a formal reprimand to Chelmer Valley High School in Essex following “infringements” of the UK’s general data protection regulations (GDPR) relating to the processing of biometric data. The school failed to assess the impact of technology introduced to manage its cashless catering system before it was introduced, and did not get explicit consent from its pupils, the ICO ruled. Lynne Currie, ICO head of privacy innovation, said: “Handling people’s information correctly in a school canteen environment is as important as the handling of the food itself. “We expect all organisations to carry out the necessary assessments when deploying a new technology to mitigate any data protection risks and ensure their compliance with data protection laws.” She said introducing measures such as facial recognition technology “should not be taken lightly, particularly when it …

Is Hamas Bound by International Law? What to Know.

Is Hamas Bound by International Law? What to Know.

Since the attacks of Oct. 7, every legal expert I have asked has shared one conclusion: Hamas’s attacks on civilians that day, including killing, torture, and hostage-taking, were war crimes. And because many hostages are still being held, that crime remains ongoing. Tom Dannenbaum, a Tufts University professor, told me just days after the attack that there was “no question” Hamas’s attack had involved multiple war crimes. “Those are not close calls,” he said. Since then, evidence has continued to mount. Last month, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced that he was seeking warrants for the arrest of three Hamas leaders on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity relating to the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, as well as the hostage-taking that followed. He also sought warrants for two Israeli officials. All of the subjects of the warrant requests have denied the accusations against them. Last week, a U.N. commission concluded that there was credible evidence that members of Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups committed war crimes on Oct. 7, …
