Britain’s nuclear sub has 2nd failed missile launch – POLITICO

Britain’s nuclear sub has 2nd failed missile launch – POLITICO

The opposition Labour Party is pressing for an explanation, and an update to MPs on the nuclear deterrent program is expected Wednesday. “It left the submarine but it just went plop, right next to them,” an unnamed source cited by the Sun said of the launch. The paper reported that the sub was fitted with dummy warheads during the test. The Ministry of Defense said in its statement that HMS Vanguard passed “all tests during a recent demonstration and shakedown operation (DASO) — a routine test to confirm that the submarine can return to service following deep maintenance work.” The statement went on: “The test has reaffirmed the effectiveness of the U.K.’s nuclear deterrent, in which we have absolute confidence. During the test an anomaly occurred.  “As a matter of national security, we cannot provide further information on this, however we are confident that the anomaly was event specific, and therefore there are no implications for the reliability of the wider Trident missile systems and stockpile.” Tests of the U.K.’s Trident nuclear system are rare …

Latest Trident Missile Launch Has Leaves Government Red-Faced

Latest Trident Missile Launch Has Leaves Government Red-Faced

A Trident missile test dramatically failed recently, dealing yet another blow to Rishi Sunak’s government. One of the Royal Navy’s battleships, HMS Vanguard, tried to fire a missile off the US’s east coast last month – only for it land pretty far away from its intended destination… What is Trident? Trident is the UK’s nuclear weapon system, with four submarines and a collection of missiles and warheads. At any one time, one of the four submarines will be based in Firth of Clyde, on Scotland’s west coast, and is meant to be a continuous nuclear deterrent. Each of the vessels can fire 16 missiles which are all loaded with multiple nuclear warheads. They’re meant to blast into space at 13,600mph and then re-enter Earth, zooming towards intended targets – which can supposedly be up to 7,500 miles away from the launch site. Those on the submarines cannot communicate with the outside world directly when on patrol, in case it could give away their location. What happened with the latest test? The Royal Navy was trying …

Amazon to launch ‘special store’ for value fashion in India

Amazon is preparing to make another attempt to break into India’s fast-growing fashion and lifestyle e-commerce sector, setting up a battle with rival Flipkart, owned by Walmart, Reliance’s Ajio and SoftBank-backed upstart Meesho. The e-commerce giant plans to launch a “special store,” called Bazaar, where it will not levy any “extra charges” to sellers offering unbranded and “trendy” fashion and lifestyle products, according to a communication the firm has sent to its partners. The items sold through Bazaar will be priced under 600 Indian rupees, or $7.2, the company says in its communication. “Your products will be featured in a special store on Amazon, making them easy for customers to find,” the company wrote in the communication. Bazaar will offer sellers access to tens of millions of customers, “hassle-free” delivery and levy zero referral fee, Amazon says in the communication. TechCrunch reported earlier this month, citing job recruitment posts, that Amazon was looking to expand its focus on fast fashion. Indian daily Economic Times reported about Bazaar earlier on Wednesday, adding that Amazon will likely …

Trident test missile ‘went plop’ into the sea after launch failure | Politics | News

A Trident missile is said to have misfired and went “plop into the sea” during a rare test launch witnessed by Defence Secretary Grant Shapps. However Ministry of Defence (MOD) officials say there remained “absolute confidence” in Britain’s constant at-sea nuclear deterrant, arguing it was “secure and effective”. The MoD said the failed launch, which took place on January 30, came as an “anomaly occurred” during a training exercise on board the nuclear-powered submarine HMS Vanguard. The Sun claims the test took place off the coast of Florida, United States. It reportedly involved a dummy Trident 2 missile that was due to be propelled into the air by compressed gas. However the publication says its so-called first stage boosters failed to ignite. A source said: “It left the submarine but it just went plop, right next to them.” The MoD said the “anomaly” was “event specific”. However, it is thought to be the second Trident misifiring in a row, with a test launch in 2016 by the Royal Navy said to have flopped. The Labour …

Trident missile misfired and crashed into ocean during rare test launch | UK News

A Trident missile has misfired and crashed into the ocean off the coast of Florida during a rare test launch by a British nuclear submarine in an embarrassing blow for the Royal Navy. The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday night confirmed an “anomaly” had occurred with the drill involving HMS Vanguard, but a spokesperson insisted that the nuclear deterrent – the cornerstone of the UK‘s defences – “remains safe, secure and effective”. The fault had something to do with it being a test-firing, with a source saying that the launch would have been successful had it been carried out for real with a nuclear warhead. The Sun newspaper first revealed the drama, which happened on 30 January, saying that Defence Secretary Grant Shapps had been onboard the submerged submarine at the time. It is the second Trident missile failure in a row for the Royal Navy‘s ageing nuclear weapons fleet after a problem with another test-firing in 2016. The UK has four nuclear-armed submarines that are charged with ensuring one boat is continuously at sea …

The crew of the British-owned, Belize-flagged bulk carrier MV Rubymar were forced to abandon ship in the Gulf of Aden on Monday, receiving help from a nearby merchant vessel and coalition warship to reach a nearby port after “two anti-ship ballistic missiles were launched from Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist-controlled areas of Yemen,” according to U.S. Central Command. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the group’s responsibility for the attack, calling it their most severe yet. The group claim to support Palestinian civilians amid Israel’s …

You can see the basic shape looks to be the same as the clay model Rivian had previously shown under wraps. Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, said the R2 will keep the “essence of the brand” but in a smaller, more affordable package.
