‘Joy and laughter’: the Leicester rugby team for children with Down’s syndrome | Down’s syndrome

A rugby team set up for young people with Down’s syndrome has been described as a “lifeline” by parents who say there is a chronic lack of opportunities for their children. Leicester Tigers launched the team in October last year and now have more than 40 families signed up to their fortnightly training sessions. Kelly Towl, whose eight-year-old, Lucie-Ann, attends the sessions said the team had had a positive impact on her daughter. “There aren’t many sports aimed solely at children with Down’s syndrome, so for that to actually happen is positive,” she said. “Your children are not judged, we’re not judged … we’re all in the same boat.” Towl, a mother of three whose family are fans of Leicester Tigers and regularly attend matches, said she was very excited by the opportunity for her daughter to participate in the sport. “I think children with Down’s syndrome, they’re stereotyped … so this really is a lifeline, and other sports and other teams should really take note,” she said. “You’ve only got to see the smile …

Sunday Brunch descends into fits of laughter after host’s awkward gaffe

On Sunday morning’s edition (28 April) of the Channel 4 show, Lovejoy and co-host Simon Rimmer were joined by comedian and presenter Sue Perkins, singer Jess Glynne, actor Sophie Thompson, comedian Josh Widdicombe and SAS: Who Dares Wins star Jason Fox. As Rimmer prepared the morning’s first course, Lovejoy made conversation with their celebrity special guests, and began asking former soldier Fox about his recent wedding to his long-time girlfriend, Jules Hawkins. After Fox noted that he got married in London and had “tapas-y” food for the reception, Lovejoy then asked whether the newlyweds went on honeymoon. “We did, we went to Jordan,” Fox said. “It’s amazing, it’s awesome, I’d thoroughly recommend it. We went all over the country and saw lots of different sides. It doesn’t disappoint.” …

The Relationship Between Laughter and Luck

The Relationship Between Laughter and Luck

In this blog series, I’ve argued that laughter affirms shared limitations or shortcomings that result from highlighting perceived changes in status relationships—status being a means of measuring our vulnerability. I’ve come to refer to this working model as the Mutual Vulnerability Theory of Laughter. Cats Coming / Pexels Laughter comes about in myriad ways. I might inadvertently fumble and drop a cookie, and my momentary lack of coordination—a vulnerability most of us share to some degree—could inspire my brother to laugh sympathetically in a “Don’t feel too badly… I’ve done that on occasion” kind of way (we might call this lifting laughter). Or I might laugh at my own failure in a “Don’t think less of me… you’ve dropped things, too” sort of way (self-lifting laughter). If it had been the last cookie in the package that I promised to my now-peeved brother, he would likely have expressed a “Your selfishness is only exceeded by your clumsiness” motivated laugh (lowering laughter). And if I were to react with such speed and precision as to keep …

Tomato & Lettuce

Tomato & Lettuce

Then, everything was garnish, two kids and a house, a wife who kept the beds made, shirts ironed, secrets hidden like dust on the canned goods. What can’t be washed with vinegar— scum of the coffee pot—or set out in the sun with fresh linen my mother swears had to be ironed and I believe men made work for women, invented tile, starch, matrimony, and ama de casa to chop the tomato and lettuce sometimes in bowls, often on the side as adornment. What is the relationship between mother and daughter, tree and limb? The moment I say my memory is not of her sadness but of her laughter I’ve gotten it all wrong. The bright split of my birth was to a woman who wanted me to wear my decoration— a tree cleaned of its bark after a cool winter doesn’t forget its leaves. This poem appears in the April 2024 print edition. Source link

‘I will always choose laughter’: Izuka Hoyle on Big Boys, Boiling Point and feeling brave | Izuka Hoyle

It was last New Year’s Eve, on a yoga mat, when Izuka Hoyle was brought to her knees in a moment of gratitude. “Classic Zuk fashion,” she says, rolling her eyes and grinning. She had been lighting candles for meditation practice when she was overcome by the speed of her own life. “I was just like, gosh, what a few years. We’ve come a way. I was feeling reflective, bruv!” She throws her head back and cackles loudly – she does this anytime she thinks she’s bordering on pretentious. But Hoyle does have a lot to be grateful for. In just a few years she has gone from drama school to being handed a Scottish Bafta by Succession’s Brian Cox for her role as a French chef in the film Boiling Point, having never spoken a word of French before. That film then became a TV series on BBC One. In 2019, she appeared in Mary Queen of Scots, opposite Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan, and in 2022 in Persuasion, alongside Dakota Johnson. Now she is …

CNN panel roars with laughter after Jake Tapper cuts of Trump’s rant over SCOTUS ballot hearing

Former President Donald Trump rebuked Thursday’s Supreme Court hearing pertaining to his eligibility to run on the Colorado primary ballot, dubbing the case a “phony hoax” in remarks outside his Mar-a-Lago residence. The comments came during Trump’s first public appearance since the more than two-hour proceeding kicked off and included digs at President Joe Biden alongside self-exaltation around his time in office, according to Mediate. Upon focusing on the Supreme Court, Trump said the proceedings were a “very beautiful process. I hope that democracy in this country will continue.” “’Cause right now we have a very, very tough situation with all of the radical left ideas, with the weaponization of politics,” Trump continued. “They weaponized it like it’s never ever been weaponized before.” The former president went on to address the spate of legal battles he’s facing, leveling unfounded claims that, it’s “totally illegal, but they do it anyway, and it has to stop, every one of the court cases that I’m involved, every single one, civil — whether it’s the attorney general’s or the district attorney’s.” He …

Reconciling a New Theory of Laughter With Its Predecessors

Reconciling a New Theory of Laughter With Its Predecessors

The following is the second of a two-part post. In this post, I will attempt to harmonize the Mutual Vulnerability Theory of Laughter (MVT) with two other prominent explanations, Superiority Theory and Play Theory. To see part one, where I give an introduction and reconcile Incongruity and Tension Relief theories, please click here. Reconciling Superiority Theory Whereas Incongruity and Tension Relief theories concentrate mainly on laughter’s benefits to individual mental and emotional well-being, Superiority Theory focuses on its ability to initiate changes within the social hierarchy. Laughter, it holds, exists as a signal of dominance, victory, or, at the very least, one’s hope for such positive outcomes. Superiority Theory postulates that laughter and humor are built upon the failings or misfortune of others (or our former selves), something that gives the laugher a delightful leg-up in the world. Source: Mikhail Nilov/Pexels It’s not hard to understand why Superiority Theory goes back as far as the ancient Greeks and, to many, remains the most robust explanation for laughter (e.g., Gruner, 1978). It correctly begins with the …

How to spot a liar: 10 essential tells – from random laughter to copycat gestures | Psychology

How to spot a liar: 10 essential tells – from random laughter to copycat gestures | Psychology

Twenty-two people in a castle, Claudia Winkleman hamming it up like crazy, a number of silly challenges, a chunk of money sitting at the centre, almost glowing, and human nature laid bare. To try to pick apart exactly what makes The Traitors so compelling would be to miss the point, like trying to analyse the ingredients in a Krispy Kreme doughnut. As enjoyable as it is, though, the show gets more infuriating with each episode. I don’t want to point fingers, still less give spoilers, so let’s keep this broad: why are they (the Faithful) all so stupid? Why can’t they tell when they are being lied to? It’s so obvious! I asked three experts how to spot a lie – and why most people can’t. First, Dr Linda Papadopoulos, a psychologist, author and broadcaster, whom people of a certain vintage may remember as the standout discovery of the first season of Big Brother. Reality TV was in its infancy, so watching ordinary people interact under a microscope was fascinating in itself, but Papadopoulos, the …

Man leaves people ‘crying with laughter’ at perfect revenge on noisy neighbour | UK | News

A man has left people in stitches at his genius revenge on his noise neighbours. In a video captioned “getting my lick back. If I can’t sleep y’all can’t”, he can be seen to grab a table with wheels. He then lifts the four-legged frame over his head and started banging the ceiling with it. Admittedly with little regard for whether or not he scratched the paintwork, the man proceeded to drag the frame along the ceiling, making a terrible scratching sound. TikTok users were left in stitches over the man’s novel tactic. One user said that his ploy had her “wheezing”, while another said it had her “hollering”. A third said: “I wanna do this so bad.” Recognising the pain that can be inflicted by the upstairs neighbour on those below, another TikTok user said: “I am the upstairs neighbour, so I try to be as quiet as I can because I once was the downstairs neighbour.” Elsewhere, more neighbour drama unfolded on Reddit with a young couple renovating their new home and garden …
