From Blackpink to Street Woman Fighter 2: Singapore-based Jam Republic makes a mark in K-pop

From Blackpink to Street Woman Fighter 2: Singapore-based Jam Republic makes a mark in K-pop

In 2017, Ong and Gallarde thought they had built a vast enough network of dancers from all over the world, and went on to create Jam Republic The Agency.  “Initially, it was difficult to get choreographers, period. Not just global, just any choreographers to join our company,” Ong said. He explained that when they started Jam Republic The Agency, there were not many dance agencies outside of the United States. “It was a very new concept to a lot of dancers. They don’t know what we do. They don’t know if we can help.”  What bolstered their credibility was that they had proven, through Jam Republic Collective, that they were able to get dancers jobs. It also helped that they had made connections with studios in other parts of Asia. In fact, meeting the “right people” proved to have a domino effect. After working with one partner, the agency would often be recommended to another in a different country. Recalling the early days of Jam Republic The Agency, Ong shared that whenever dancers and partners were …

South Korean activists respond to North’s trash balloons with K-pop

South Korean activists respond to North’s trash balloons with K-pop

SEOUL — After North Korea recently sent thousands of waste-filled balloons to South Korea, activists here responded with airborne deliveries that the regime up north might find even more despicable than garbage: K-pop and K-dramas. On Thursday, activists in South Korea set aloft 10 large balloons containing thousands of USB drives loaded with local music — including K-pop and trot songs, an old-school South Korean genre experiencing a modern revival — and “Winter Sonata,” a hugely popular romance TV series. Launched after midnight from Pocheon, a city about 30 miles northeast of Seoul, the balloons also carried 200,000 leaflets criticizing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as well as 2,000 U.S. $1 bills, according to a statement from the Fighters for Free North Korea (FFNK) group, which is led by North Korean defector Park Sang-hak. In a statement, FFNK accused North Korea of “indiscriminately dropping” 15 tons of waste on the South via balloons, calling it “a display of insult and embarrassment for our 50 million citizens.” The South Korean military said that the balloons …

Can K-pop bridge the divide between the two Koreas? South Korea’s unification minister thinks so

Can K-pop bridge the divide between the two Koreas? South Korea’s unification minister thinks so

“Especially emphasising hostility in inter-Korean relations is seen as serving the purpose of deflecting internal discontent arising from economic hardship and food shortages in North Korea outwards,” said Mr Kim, an outspoken critic of human rights abuses in North Korea. “Furthermore, emphasising this hostility is also for the purpose of justifying North Korea’s distortion of resources to develop nuclear weapons and missiles.” He noted that within Pyongyang, there seems to be discord after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced in January that he is abandoning reunification, which had been the goal of Kim Il Sung – his grandfather and the founder of North Korea – and his father Kim Jong Il. “The North Korean regime is moving to erase the legacies of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. The Kim Jong Un regime is a hereditary dictatorship, standing on the achievements of the previous leaders, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il,” said Minister Kim.  “However, if they decide to dismantle the three great principles of national reunification and simply treat them as …

ATEEZ on Being First K-Pop Boy Group to Perform at Coachella

Just a day before their second performance at Coachella, K-Pop group ATEEZ gathered at the Grammy Museum for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The eight-piece outfit and its fellow KQ Entertainment boy group xikers are the subject of a pop-up exhibit that opened to the public on April 10. The exhibit spotlights costumes and props worn and used by the group (consisting of members Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung and Jongho) from their most recent album, The World EP.Fin: Will. The album, which all members wrote for, earned the global stars their first Billboard 200 No. 1 in December. The ribbon-cutting ceremony wasn’t the group’s first outing to the museum. In February of 2022, shortly after their pair of sold-out shows at the Kia Forum, ATEEZ took part in the museum’s Global Spin Live series, participating in a conversation and performance for a select number of fans. “We’ve looked around before, but it feels very different to be able to see our own items and outfits on display at an exhibition here at the Grammy Museum,” …

K-Pop Group Stray Kids Star in New Tommy Hilfiger Campaign

K-Pop boy group Stray Kids has reunited with Tommy Hilfiger for a new Spring 2024 campaign. Photographed by Sean Thomas, the eight-member group found a moment away from global tour dates and releasing Billboard 200 No. 1 albums to take over the 36th floor of the Conrad Seoul Hotel to take part in their second campaign shoot with the brand. The campaign features members Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Felix, Seungmin and I.N decked out in head-to-toe Hilfiger looks that radiate the brand’s classic preppy identity. Group member Han was absent from the campaign due to “exhibiting sudden symptoms of a cold” and “scheduling difficulties,” the group’s label announced in a statement on their social media. The campaign is meant to revisit Tommy Hilfiger’s original vision for modern prep, according to a release, while also acting as a celebration of Stray Kids’ “collective energy and authentic bond, captured through a red, white and blue lens.” The collection features reinventions of the brand’s iconic polo shirts, knitwear and varsity jackets, all in hues of red, …

K-pop star Karina apologises to angry fans after it emerges she is in a relationship with actor Lee Jae-wook | World News

A K-pop star has issued a handwritten apology to angry fans who accused her of betrayal and threatened to stop attending her concerts because she has a boyfriend. South Korean singer Karina, who fronts the girl group Aespa, has promised fans she will “heal the wounds” after it emerged last week that she is dating the actor Lee Jae-wook. Some fans drove a truck to the headquarters of SM Entertainment, which formed and manages Aespa, with an electronic sign attached demanding an apology, South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reports. The message read: “Is the love to you by your fans not enough? Why did you choose to betray the fans? Please apologise directly. Otherwise, you will see a decrease in album sales and empty concert seats.” In a handwritten note posted from her Instagram account on Wednesday, Karina, whose real name is Yu Ji-min, wrote: “I apologise for surprising you greatly”. She added: “I know very well how disappointed [my fans] who have supported me are and how upset you’re thinking about the memories we …
