Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, has unveiled a key pledge to reduce knife crime in the UK should the party be elected to power next month. “Knife crime is an issue above and beyond party politics,” he said this week. “For the parents grieving sons and daughters who never came home, action to end this scourge cannot wait. “Far too often we hear the same stories from grieving families who have been subject to these brutal murders carried out by children.” Stefan Rousseau / PA Wire Alongside actor Idris Elba, a prominent campaigner against knife crime, Starmer laid out his party’s plans to tackle knife crime head on as he spoke to families who had lost loved ones. Starmer also vowed to chair an annual summit that will work toward halving UK knife crime incidents within the next 10 years. So how has knife crime evolved in the UK in recent years? Harold Cunningham/Getty Images The maker of the Swiss Army Knife says it plans to begin offering pocket tools that don’t contain blades. Victorinox CEO Carl Elsener told the Swiss news outlet Blick last week that rising violence in certain parts of the world has prompted multiple governments to crack down on what types of blades people can brandish in public, possibly making it harder for consumers to carry the company’s iconic red multitools. “In England or certain Asian countries, you are sometimes only allowed to carry a knife if you need it to do your job or go outdoors,” Elsener said in an interview translated from German. “In the city, however, when you go to school, to the cinema, go shopping, carrying pocket knives is severely restricted.” The CEO said that’s caused the storied manufacturer to begin …
New data released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows knife and gun crime in London rose sharply in the 12 months before December 2023. The Metropolitan Police Service saw a 21% increase in knife or sharp instrument incidents across the capital between 2022 and 2023. Between January 2023 and January 2024, the rate of increase stood at 16%. In January 2024, these alarming figures prompted actor Idris Elba to launch the Don’t Stop Your Future campaign. The aim was to raise public awareness and amplify the voices of those marginalised communities most affected in the capital. Elba called for a ban on zombie knives and machetes and, crucially, for better funding for youth services. Across England and Wales, knife crime and violence has worsened over the past decade. The ONS has shown that the number of violent and sexual offences involving knives and sharp instruments (as recorded by police forces, excluding Greater Manchester Police) rose from 642 (in the 12 months between April 2010 and March 2011) to 891 (in the 12 months …
In a world that is fracturing into a multipolar state, with risks of world war erupting in either Eastern Europe or the Middle East, continued threats of conflict in the Pacific, and the migrant invasion across Western countries, the company behind the iconic half-century-old fold-up tool, the Swiss Army Knife, will soon debut a blade-less version because of regulations. Victorinox Chief Executive Officer Carl Eisner told Swiss paper Blick on Monday that its Swiss Army Knife will soon be available without a blade due to mounting regulations in European and Asian countries amid a surge in violence. “We are concerned about the increasing regulation of knives due to the violence in the world,” Elsener said, citing new laws in the UK and Asian countries that only permit knife-carrying for work or outdoor activities. Eisner said, “In some markets, the blade creates an image of a weapon.” Victorinox told Bloomberg, “The increasing regulation of knives in various countries represents a major challenge for the company.” Pocket knives are rarely misused. And there’s reason to believe kitchen knives and machetes are being used in attacks across the West …
Andy Street (Alamy) 3 min read31 min The West Midlands mayoral election is on a knife edge with a recount ordered by the Tories in Coventry after it was considered to be unclear whether Labour or Conservatives had clinched the mayoralty. A victory for Richard Parker, the Labour candidate, over Tory incumbent Andy Street would be a significant blow to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s authority after his party managed to hang onto Ben Houchen in Tees Valley on Saturday. But whatever the result in the West Midlands Tory MPs do not believe a leadership challenge will be made against the prime minister. Early on Saturday evening, Street had won the Solihull region, but by a smaller margin than he achieved in 2021, with 62 per cent of the vote compared to 68 when the West Midlands mayorlty was last contested in 2021. Meanwhile Parker received 21 per cent of the vote, up from15 per cent at the previous election. In Wolverhampton, Parker beat Street with more than 26,000 to fewer than 19,000 votes. The area was won by the Conservatives in 2021. Labour also won …
A 16-year-old boy has been detained for life for murder after stabbing a talented teenage rapper in the back of the neck with a “zombie” knife at a house party in Bath. Two of the murderer’s 16-year-old friends, who were also carrying zombie knives, were detained for nine years and nine years and six months after being found guilty of the manslaughter of Mikey Roynon, 16. During his sentencing remarks, Mr Justice Saini said the killing was an example of the “plague of knife crime” that was blighting Bristol and surrounding areas. He said: “The lives of young boys who carry knives continue to be taken at the hands of other boys who carry knives.” He said Mikey, from Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, was still a child but had a “bright musical career ahead of him”. Mikey’s mother, Hayley Ryall, said: “Every morning I wake up and it hurts as much as the last morning. I keep having awful dreams that Mikey is lost and I’m looking for him, but even the awful dreams are better …

The sword attack in Hainault has reignited conversations about the UK’s knife crime problem, especially in the capital. The 14-year-old boy killed in the attack was named as Daniel Anjorin. Data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) last week shows that knife crime increased by 7% from the year ending December 2022 to December 2023 and has increased by 81% in the past decade. Why is this happening? Explanations for the rise in knife crime are mainly linked to police budget cuts, falling officer numbers and decreases in youth services. “We’ve seen austerity cuts which have decimated youth services,” said Patrick Green, CEO of the Ben Kinsella trust. “Youth services play a phenomenal part in reducing knife crime because they take young people off the streets, put them into positive activities and get them in front of positive mentors who have a significant influence on their lives.” More on Data And Forensics Research from the National Youth Agency shows that youth services have been cut by 77% over more than a decade.
