Stanley Kubrick’s Annotated Copy of Stephen King’s The Shining

Stanley Kubrick’s Annotated Copy of Stephen King’s The Shining

The web site Overlook Hotel has posted pictures of Stanley Kubrick’s personal copy of Stephen King’s novel The Shining. The book is filled with highlighted passages and largely illegible notes in the margin—tantalizing clues to Kubrick’s intentions for the movie. The site features a picture of the book’s careworn cover along with two spreads from the book’s interior —pages 8–9, where Jack Torrance is being interviewed by hotel manager Mr. Ullman, and pages 86–87 where hotel cook Dick Hallorann talks to Jack’s son Danny about the telepathic ability called “shining.” Much of the marginalia is maddeningly hard to decipher. One of the notes I could make out reads: Maybe just like their [sic] are people who can shine, maybe there are places that are special. Maybe it has to do with what happened in them or where they were built. Kubrick is clearly working to translate King’s book into film. Other notes, however, seem wholly unrelated to the movie. Any problems with the kitchen – you phone me. When The Shining came out, it was greeted …

7 Notable Kings of Israel and Judah From the Bible

7 Notable Kings of Israel and Judah From the Bible

According to the Bible, God never intended for Israel to be a monarchy. God warned the people of Israel through his prophet Samuel not to be like other nations and desire a king, but they would not take heed. The nation of Israel opted for a monarchy, and their choice set in motion a series of events that would not only see the Kingdom of Israel split in two but also war against one another.   The northern Kingdom of Israel consisted of ten of the original tribes of Israel which were sent into exile by the Assyrians. Later, the Southern Kingdom, made up of Judah and Benjamin, also went into exile when the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem, sacked it, and destroyed the Temple. Among the kings of Israel and Judah, some were good, and others were bad. So, who were the key kings of Israel and Judah?   1. Saul Death of King Saul, by Elie Marcuse, 1848. Humanist priorities raised in King’s Speech debates

Humanist priorities raised in King’s Speech debates

Over the past week MPs and Lords have been debating the proposals in the King’s speech and many have raised a range of key humanist issues. Yesterday, in a debate on modernising the House of Commons, All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG) member Ellie Chowns MP raised the issue of parliamentary prayers and how those members who do not wish to attend Anglican prayers due to their own personal beliefs were left at a democratic disadvantage as the current Commons chamber is only able to seat 427 out of 650 MPs. The MP told the Commons that this leads to, ‘some frankly rather ridiculous behaviour’, with members, ‘queuing up at the opening of the Chamber to place a prayer card and book a seat.’ The UK Parliament is currently the only national legislature that does this. It’s time this outdated practice changed. Meanwhile in a debate on the Constitution in the Lords, peers raised the key issue of bishops in the Lords. Currently 26 Church of England bishops have the automatic right to sit, speak, and …

Kings of Leon – Can We Please Have Fun The ninth instalment of Kings of Leon’s discography has a vintage twist, leaning back into original sounds fans fell in love with in the early 2000s. Businesses across the South East have been recognised in the second annual King’s Awards for Enterprise. Launched by the late Queen Elizabeth in 1965 and now carried forward by King Charles, the programme has celebrated the enterprising efforts of more than 7,000 companies around the UK in its sixty-year history. The awards are presented across four categories – innovation, international trade, sustainable development, and promoting opportunity. Winning businesses are then visited throughout the year by His Majesty’s lord-lieutenants to receive their awards, along with an official certificate and commemorative crystal trophy. They’re also able to fly a King’s Awards flag at their main office and use the emblem on marketing materials. Kevin Hollinrake, minister for enterprise, said: “I congratulate the recipients of this year’s King’s Awards for Enterprise, who exemplify the talent, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of British business. “I wish them every success and commend the invaluable contributions they make to communities both at home and overseas, helping to grow the UK economy.” Without further ado, here are the award winners from the South …
