Kindles have helpful features that you may want to take advantage of it. Long-press a word or phrase to see its definition, highlight it, or take notes. You can also search the entire book for that particular word or phrase or translate it to or from other languages. Word Wise shows short definitions in small text within the lines. Unfortunately, it’s not available for all books, but when it is, you can turn it on or off and choose more and fewer hints. Clicking the short definition opens a longer one from Word Wise and the New Oxford American Dictionary or Oxford Dictionary of English (you can switch between the two), plus translations, and a Wikipedia page, if applicable. While reading, tap the top of the screen and click “Aa” to change font size or type—there’s even a font called OpenDyslexic that helps make reading easier for people with dyslexia. Last month, we reported that the lock screens of Amazon Kindles were displaying ads for what were obviously AI-generated books, leading to an outcry from readers on social media. At the time, our best theory was that bad actors were somehow manipulating Amazon’s algorithms to boost their garbled offerings ahead of worthwhile books by human authors. But as readers pointed out, the reality is even worse: Amazon is actively accepting money to place the Kindle lock screen ads, as it discloses in its own documentation. “Lock screen ads allow you to promote your eBooks directly to the customers most likely to buy them,” the company wrote in a guide to buying the ads. “Set your own bids and budgets. You’ll only pay when readers tap your ad.” According to New York Times bestselling author Bree Bridges, who writes under the pen name Kit Rocha with her co-author Donna Herren, the scheme is basically an attempt to exploit Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited subscription plan. Nina Raemont/ZDNET Amazon Kindle owners who use the ad-supported version of the device say they’re being inundated with ads for AI-generated books, Futurism reported, citing complaints on Reddit and social media platforms. Many of the books don’t appear to be popular and haven’t garnered strong reviews on Amazon’s website, according to the report. “I’ve owned a Kindle for 10 years or so now,” one Reddit user wrote. “I’ve never minded the ads on them… until they became flooded with AI-generated books.” Many of the AI-generated books, including “The Secret Adventures of the Magical Forest” and “The Boy and the Monsters,” appear to be tailored to children, according to the report.
