(Not that it isn’t true for some of them, who tend to relegate themselves to smaller subgenres: consult Ishkur’s Guide to Electronic Music for a map of the sonic territory.) And it’s equally easy to believe that, if you aren’t explicitly into electronic music, then you don’t listen to it. But in fact, its history is one of long-term integration so thorough that many of us frequently listen to electronic music — or at any rate, electronic-adjacent music — without being conscious of that fact. (RNS) — Elket Rodríguez, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s global migration advocate, has served migrants on the Texas-Mexico border for years. But until earlier this month, he had never been to the Darien Gap, a dangerous jungle route many migrants traverse as they move from Colombia to Panama, most often en route to the United States. In early November, just days after former U.S. President Donald Trump was elected to a second term, Rodríguez joined a pilgrimage sponsored by Como Nacido Entre Nosotros, or “As Born Among Us,” an ecumenical Protestant Christian network working on migration issues. “It’s a level of vulnerability, even much higher than what I see at the border,” Rodríguez said of his experience. The trip brought 25 Latino Protestant leaders and pastors to Panama to help them understand the experiences of migrants who arrive in their communities and to explore opportunities to collaborate with Panamanian churches and other partners to support migrants. Early in Yáng Shuāng-zǐ’s Taiwan Travelogue, the narrator, on a late night train, watches her traveling companion become engrossed in a book. When she asks about it, the woman balks at the interruption. “Her soul,” the narrator observes, “seemed to slot back into her body.” A good book can briefly steal your soul, replacing it with its own. But some books make you fight for that privilege; Taiwan Travelogue is one. Translated from Mandarin by Lin King, the novel about love, colonialism, war, and food—which this week won the National Book Award for translated literature—is intentionally constructed to make its soul difficult to locate. The book is framed as a new Mandarin translation of an autobiographical 1954 Japanese novel by the author Aoyama Chizuko, which was itself based on her earlier collection of travel columns. (Chizuko is a fictional creation; the original Mandarin edition of Taiwan Travelogue sparked controversy by listing her as its author, and Yáng as the translator.) When Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, hundreds of refugees began pouring into Warsaw central station in Poland every day in search of safety. Most were native Ukrainians, while others were third-country nationals who had built a life in Ukraine. For all those fleeing the devastation, it was a time of terror and uncertainty, but for the latter group, it was particularly perilous. “From the very beginning of the war, we were getting information about all kinds of abuses that non-Ukrainian [refugees] were facing in Ukraine while trying to get to Poland,” says activist Jarmiła Rybicka. “At the border on both sides, non-Ukrainians were expelled or sent to the back of the queues. They were pushed out from trains and told that there was no space for them. Meanwhile, white Ukrainians escaped.” Once they made it into Poland, minority refugees continued to face obstacles at every turn, starting at the train station, where they were not even allowed to use the toilets for free. It was during this time, he attended a fortune telling party. There he met a woman, who told him things that happened to him growing up. This included things that he had never told anybody. This was his introduction to Santeria, a religion that originate in Cuba in the 19th century. It combines Roman Catholicis with an African religion called Yoruba, that incorporates the worship of spirits. People are encouraged to develop relationships with at least one of these spirits called oricha. They can do this by setting up altars and worshipping them. This includes dancing, prayer and providing offerings which typically include liquor, fruit and even sacrificed animals. Santeria basically incoporiates these practices but replaces the oricha with saints. These saints are often given the attributes of the orichas from the Yoruba religion.
