Esther Rantzen on why the likes of Jeremy Clarkson gives her hope

Esther Rantzen on why the likes of Jeremy Clarkson gives her hope

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine in October 2025 and is being reshared following the death of Esther Rantzen at the age of 86 on 30 September 2026. The nights are longer, darker and colder, the last rose of summer shed her petals weeks ago – but thank heavens Strictly’s sequins are flashing across our screens. Television is so often criticised for dumbing down, or creating scandals, it’s worth pointing out it can also make a positive impact on our lives. There is no doubt that the return of Strictly makes the chill of winter bearable. And that’s just one example of the palpable difference television makes to millions of us, particularly those who live alone or cannot get out of their own homes. It can provide company, fun – and at its best, sparkling entertainment. At the same time, it has the power to make a real difference to our knowledge and our attitude. When Chris McCausland took part in and won the last series of Strictly, he challenged every preconception about …

Jeremy Clarkson delivers Clarkson’s Farm season 6 update

It’s been a remarkable year for Jeremy Clarkson. Following the release of Clarkson’s Farm season 5, during which the TV personality revealed he had prostrate cancer (he is now in remission), he would go on to win a National Television Award for the Amazon Prime Video series. Speaking exclusively to Radio Times (above) after collecting the gong for reality docuseries, Clarkson previewed season 6, which is currently in production. “We’ve nearly wrapped on six,” he explained. “A couple of weeks away from finishing that, and then it’ll be edited and translated and so on. But nearly done six, and then who knows?” Like farmers up and down the country, Diddly Squat has been subject to the difficult weather conditions over the past year, which Clarkson said has been “catastrophic” for the community. Jeremy Clarkson says multiple sheep stolen from his Diddly Squat farm

Clarkson’s Farm presenter Jeremy Clarkson has said that 11 sheep have been stolen from his Diddly Squat farm. The 66-year-old said he noticed the livestock were missing while counting his flock in Chadlington, Oxfordshire, alongside co-star Kaleb Cooper. In an interview with The Sun, he told those responsible to “put them back”. The former Top Gear and The Grand Tour host stated that the stolen sheep were worth in excess of £2,000 at market, expressing concern that animals kept in other fields on the property might also have been taken. He suggested the theft took place at night or on a day when filming for Prime Video’s Clarkson’s Farm was paused, explaining that otherwise there is “a film crew here all the time” and “a drone in the air”. Asked whether he believed the show had made his farm a target, Clarkson said: “It’s more likely to make you a target than less, but I still don’t think they’ve been stolen because they’re on Diddly Squat. “How can you (stop it) if someone’s determined to …

Jeremy Allen White Knew Show’s Ending for 2 Years

Goodbye, Chef. The fifth and final season of FX‘s The Bear debuted Thursday on Hulu and ahead of the season’s release, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with the cast about saying goodbye to the hit series and the characters they’ve played over five seasons. “It was hard to say goodbye,” Jeremy Allen White told THR. But he found comfort in knowing the series’ ending in advance. “We’re really lucky in that we had a buildup,” he said. “I knew for about two years when it was going to end and how it was going to end, so there was a lot of time to prepare.” He added, “I’m going to miss these people so much, I’m going to miss the set. The Bear set is so specific — it’s incredibly detail-oriented and exacting, but also flexible and freeing. It’s a hard thing to say goodbye to anything you love.” Premiering in 2022, The Bear, created by Christopher Storer, has followed White’s Carmy, an award-winning fine-dining chef who returns to Chicago to transform his family’s sandwich shop …

Only Farmers: Jeremy Clarkson’s new business venture easily confused for X-rated website

Only Farmers: Jeremy Clarkson’s new business venture easily confused for X-rated website

If you’re somebody who takes a glance at the subscription-based and occasionally pornographic content platform OnlyFans and think, “My god, wouldn’t it be wonderful if Jeremy Clarkson pitched his tent here”, you’re now in luck. Sort of. The Clarkson’s Farm star has helped launch Only Farmers, a new online marketplace in which users can book farms for holidays, tours and private hire, and farmers themselves can further monetise their land. Think of it like a farm-based take on Airbnb, only with a far dirtier-sounding moniker. “Only Farmers is launching with UK farms first, while welcoming visitors from around the world to discover the British countryside,” its website reads. “From farm stays and family days to workshops, great food, animals, and events, book directly with the farmer.” Jeremy Clarkson has helped launch new platform, Only Farmers (Getty) For farmers, it offers the capability to take bookings, set their own listings, prices and booking rules, and look after their payments and messages themselves. A number of stars from Clarkson’s Farm have also provided quotes of support for …

‘I’m back and not dead’: How Jeremy Clarkson farmwashed his dodgy reputation

‘I’m back and not dead’: How Jeremy Clarkson farmwashed his dodgy reputation

I’m back and not dead,” Jeremy Clarkson announces, at the outset of the new series of Clarkson’s Farm. “It was f***ing close though.” He’s talking about a blocked artery – which necessitated a hasty heart procedure back in 2024 – but he might as well be referring to his reputation. Time after time, Clarkson has pulled back from the brink, like Michael Caine slithering across the coach floor in The Italian Job. But are the British public being suckered by this avuncular agricultural Clarkson? Where has the provocateur gone? Is the series, now in its fifth season, nothing more than an exercise in “farmwashing”? Clarkson’s big money move to Amazon has proven a successful distraction from the numerous controversies that made him unpalatable at the BBC. For years he flirted with breaching the organisation’s impartiality guidelines: he referred to then Prime Minister Gordon Brown as a “one-eyed Scottish idiot”, called the Welsh language “a silly maypole around which a bunch of hotheads can get all nationalistic”, and repeatedly drew flack for his blasé attitude to …

Clarkson’s Farm season 5 review: Jeremy Clarkson is unwell at Diddly Squat

Clarkson’s Farm season 5 review: Jeremy Clarkson is unwell at Diddly Squat

A star rating of 4 out of 5. Jeremy Clarkson is unwell. His jolly reality doc, set on his Diddly Squat farm in Oxfordshire, returns for season 5 with the presenter/landowner in hospital, barely surviving several blockages around his heart – when he does put his waxed jacket and wellies back on, he’s under strict doctor’s orders to take it easy. No booze, no red meat and no stress or manual labour allowed. He’s definitely not supposed to argue with right-hand man Kaleb Cooper about the correct shape of a bonfire, help a vet launch a dead sheep into the back of a Range Rover or become apoplectic at Rachel Reeves’s budget hitting farmers with extra tax. Clarkson’s Farm, however, has always been about its host doing things he’s not supposed to do, so, of course, he quickly steams into all of the above, and we’re back into the show’s normal rhythm: pratfalling ineptitude punctuated by genuine concern over the plight of the British agricultural industry. Meanwhile at the newest Clarkson venture, his gastropub the …

A Workingman’s Surrealist | Jeremy Lybarger

A Workingman’s Surrealist | Jeremy Lybarger

You could say that H. C. Westermann became an artist on the morning of March 19, 1945. While serving as a marine gunner on the USS Enterprise during World War II, the twenty-two-year-old witnessed an enemy aircraft dive-bomb the nearby USS Franklin off the coast of Japan, killing more than seven hundred men—most of them broiled in the explosions, others asphyxiated by the rampant smoke and fuel vapor or drowned in the ocean. Westermann later recalled the “horrible smell of death” that seethed from that inferno—a smell that lingered in his imagination for decades as he transfigured the experience into sculptures, prints, and drawings of enigmatic brio. A recurring image in Westermann’s work is the death ship: stalled, adrift, encroached on by sharks. He sometimes portrays it as a masted merchant ship, at other times as a metal-hulled freighter, hobbled in arctic ice or becalmed in a shabby sundown port. The death ship is his most autobiographical motif, though it hardly conveys the idiosyncrasy of his vision, which cribs from science fiction, pulp novels, and …

Clarkson’s Farm producer reveals why the Jeremy Clarkson show could end

A fifth season of Clarkson’s Farm is fast approaching, but the show’s producer has provided an insight into why the Prime Video series will one day conclude. Clarkson has previously shared his thoughts on when the series will ultimately end, previously saying that while they will “definitely” make six seasons, he will stop doing them “when there are no more ideas”. “But I’ve got two quite good ones, so we’ll do six and then we’ll see,” he said at the time. Now Andy Wilman – producer and Clarkson’s long-time collaborator – has said the show will only continue as long as Clarkson wants to do it. “This is our third big show – Top Gear kind of got ended for us, I can’t say that was a plan,” Wilman told the Extraordinary Life Stories podcast “The Grand Tour, we brought that to an end, we planned that – we were like, we have to land the plane while it’s still dignified and in the air and we’ve still got an audience. Jeremy Clarkson on Clarkson’s …
