Antonelli ends 60-year wait for home winner after starting 19th at Italian GP

Antonelli ends 60-year wait for home winner after starting 19th at Italian GP

That meant that when Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari had scrappy sessions, Gasly was there to pick up the pole. It would not have been a surprise had he qualified on the front two rows, though.  It was a disappointment for George Russell, who missed out by just 0.06sec. Still, it could have been better but it could have been worse. Starting on the front row is no bad thing here and it is expected that Mercedes will have a faster race car (and possibly the fastest) than Alpine. With Antonelli starting at the back because of an engine penalty, it gives Russell the chance to eat into Antonelli’s title lead.  What would be a satisfying amount today? Well, if Russell wins and Antonelli fights his way back to fourth, say, that is a 13-point gap, meaning Russell would be 46 points adrift heading into Madrid next week. Still, let’s not forget that Russell will have to take one of these engine penalties soon, too… Source link

Meloni furious as ‘paedophile migrant’ released because he said sorry

A Bangladeshi migrant accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in Italy was released from police custody after two days because he apologised. The case made front-page news in Italy and Giorgia Meloni’s government has now intervened, ordering a review of the case. The young girl visited a corner shop on the outskirts of Turin to buy snacks for her siblings when the 42-year-old Bangladeshi man lured her into the back of the premises and sexually assaulted her. She returned home in tears and told her mother what had happened. The shopkeeper was arrested by police and remanded in custody. But he was released two days later after judges ruled that he had cooperated with police, had shown contrition and said he was sorry for what he had done. ‘State of shock’ “He gave me a drink as a gift, then he came close to me and asked if I had a boyfriend,” the girl told police, according to the Italian media. “He asked me how old I was. I told him and he said, …

Tourist ‘still in shock’ after waiter’s disgusting request to chef uncovered | World | News

Tourists were shocked to find something they had not ordered on their bill after dining out while on vacation. Maria Clara and her family were visiting a restaurant in in Romagna, Italy on August 19, according to reports. She ordered a breakfast of scrambled eggs, juice and coffee. “I’m still in shock, I can’t believe this happened to me,” Maria Clara told local media. When her food arrived, she noticed the scramble was runny and asked her server if she could have “the eggs a little more cooked”. The server allegedly scoffed that they “don’t make raw eggs here”. “In the end, they arrived very soft, but I didn’t ask for them to be recooked,” she recalled. “I let it go because I didn’t want to argue,” Clara said. Clara later noticed a horrifying message on her receipt. She included the receipt in a one-star Google review of the establishment. It read: “This is pissing me off. Burn the eggs and spit in them.” This was flagged with the managers. Clara said the 17-year-old server …

‘Everything you’d want from Italy, all in one place’: Brescia, Lombardy’s hidden gem

‘Everything you’d want from Italy, all in one place’: Brescia, Lombardy’s hidden gem

We have hardly begun walking before I spot the side alley, curving away from the main road in a patchwork of sunlit yellow walls, shuttered windows and shadowy archways. “What’s up there?” Elena, my guide to the city, pulls a wry smile. “That is Carmine. As a kid, I was warned not to go there.” I turn up the alley. There’s a lot of graffiti. Next to an anarchy symbol, someone has sprayed “morte al decoro” – death to decorum. I’m intrigued. We go further, finding a labyrinth of colourful streets filled with bars and restaurants, a few just opening up for the day. Like the bohemian quarter at its heart, Brescia is an Italian city that is easily missed: it’s near the Dolomites and Lake Garda, but not close enough to be a base for them. Tourists tend to speed past on their way to Milan or Verona. Fiercely proud of her city, Elena is on a mission to convince me it is worth a stop. “You’ll see. We’ve got everything you’d want from …

Italy demands compensation from Germany over migrant arrivals

Italy demands compensation from Germany over migrant arrivals

The dispute between Italy and Germany over the sharing of responsibility for migrants is becoming increasingly heated. The Italian Interior Ministry has now released new figures on private rescue vessels and is demanding financial compensation from Germany. Since Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took office in October 2022, German aid organisations have, according to Rome’s figures, brought around 22,500 migrants to Italian ports. In total, about 42,300 people have arrived in Italy on board private rescue ships during this period. This means that, by Italy’s calculation, more than half of these arrivals are attributable to German aid organisations. A further roughly 4,500 people reached Italy on ships operated by other European aid organisations, although their vessels were sailing under the German flag. Rome therefore puts the German share at almost two-thirds of all migrant arrivals by private rescue vessels. Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has called for Germany to contribute financially. Piantedosi has made it clear that Italy does not want to discuss taking back migrants from Germany who first entered the EU through Italy …

2,500-Year-Old Etruscan Bronze Relics Found in Ancient Well in Italy

Archaeologists working in northern Italy excavated “remarkably well-preserved” bronze artifacts from a well dating back to the ancient Etruscan city of Kainua. As reported by Heritage Daily, “Bronze figures buried at the bottom of an ancient well for nearly two and a half millennia are now emerging with their metallic lustre still present, as archaeologists have unearthed evidence of ritual activity at one of Italy’s most important Etruscan sites.” The excavation, undertaken by the University of Bologna and the Ravenna Archaeological Group, led to the discovery of two bronze statues of female figures and an “extremely rare” bronze bowl near the town of Marzabotto. Also found at the site were human remains belonging to two adults. “Archaeologists believe the bronze objects were deliberately deposited as votive offerings rather than accidentally lost,” according to Heritage Daily. “The discovery suggests the well served not simply as part of the city’s water supply but as a sacred place associated with ceremonies involving water and possibly the foundation of Kainua itself.” The human remains are thought to be from …
