Look Closer: Interior With Women Beside a Linen Cupboard

Pieter de Hooch was a contemporary of Johannes Vermeer in the Dutch city of Delft for a time; they painted similar subjects, in similar costumes, engaged in similarly quotidian activities. But they were quite different artists. De Hooch’s 1663 painting Interior With Women Beside a Linen Cupboard delivers exactly as little drama and numinous transcendence as its title promises. Synchronised volcanic eruptions on Io hint at a spongy interior

Five volcanoes on Jupiter’s moon Io erupted all at once in a cataclysm of lava. This means that they are probably all connected to the same underground magma network, which will help solve the mystery of Io’s insides. At the end of 2024, researchers monitoring Io via NASA’s Juno spacecraft saw an unusually enormous lava flow near its south pole. “There was this one gigantic eruption and lava flow, and that’s what first caught our eye, but on second look, all these other hotspots lit up as well,” says Jani Radebaugh at Brigham Young University in Utah. “There’s so much magma that we can’t quite wrap our minds around it.” The erupted lava spanned an area of about 65,000 square kilometres and released more energy than any eruption previously spotted on Io. “Picture standing at the edge of one of these features, and the valley that has been cold suddenly fills up with an entire lake of lava. Volkswagen is preparing to launch its new family of entry-level EVs, starting with the ID. Polo. With its official debut just around the corner, we are finally getting our first look at the revamped interior. Volkswagen shares first look at the ID. Polo interior The ID.Polo “marks the beginning of a new generation of Volkswagen,” according to VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer, and that includes an all-new interior look. It will be the first of four new entry-level EVs, starting this spring. We got a sneak peek of the interior over two years ago through the ID 2all concept, a preview of the upcoming electric Polo. Volkswagen’s head of design, Andreas Mindt, posted a video on social media, saying that “The future of Volkswagen interiors has arrived in the ID 2all concept car.” The entry-level EV is about the same size as the gas-powered Polo (4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height), but thanks to compact drive modules and a flat battery pack design, the ID.
