Russia Winning In Ukraine, Continually Gaining Leverage: US Intel Community

The US government in its 2025 Annual Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community – which was just released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in conjunction with top officials’ testimony at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing Tuesday – has admitted that Ukraine’s battlefield prospects are fading amid the onslaught of superior Russian forces. Currently, Moscow has “seized the upper hand” in the war over the past year, the fresh assessment warns, and “is on a path to accrue greater leverage” as peace talks with Washington are underway. “Even though Russian President [Vladimir] Putin will be unable to achieve the total victory he envisioned when initiating the large-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia retains momentum as a grinding war of attrition plays to Russia’s military advantages,” the report states. Via Getty Images “This grinding war of attrition will lead to a gradual but steady erosion of Kyiv’s position on the battlefield, regardless of any U.S. or allied attempts to impose new and greater costs on Moscow,” it continues. This should come as no surprise …

Former Intel CEO Gelsinger joins religious-oriented tech firm Gloo for AI push

SAN FRANCISCO : Gloo, a Boulder, Colorado-based firm that offers technology tools to Christian churches and other faith groups, said on Monday that Pat Gelsinger is joining the firm as its head of technology and executive chairman, where he will help the group develop AI tools such as virtual assistants and chatbots. Gelsinger is the former CEO of both chipmaker Intel and Broadcom-owned VMware. Gelsinger left Intel last year after a clash with its board over his turnaround plans. Gelsinger’s job at Gloo will be his first operational role since leaving Intel. Gelsinger, a lifelong Christian who has helmed a group in the San Francisco Bay area working to expand church membership in the area for more than decade, previously served on Gloo’s board as non-executive chairman since 2018. Founded in 2013, Gloo last year raised $110 million in growth financing for an AI push. It is developing chatbots with a “safe search” option and answers grounded in the Christian Bible. Gelsinger will oversee Gloo’s product and engineering efforts. “Technology has the power to connect, uplift …

Intel has already received .2B in federal grants for chip production

Intel has already received $2.2B in federal grants for chip production

Semiconductor giant Intel Corporation has already received $2.2 billion in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce through the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, the company shared during its Thursday earnings call. Dave Zinsner, Intel’s co-interim CEO, executive vice president, and CFO, said the Silicon Valley-based company received the first tranche of $1.1 billion in federal grants at the end of 2024 and an additional $1.1 billion in January 2025. These grants are based on reaching certain milestones, Zinsner added. Another $5.66 billion has yet to be dispersed. The company was awarded a total of $7.86 billion in federal grants to build semiconductors in the U.S. in November as part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s U.S. CHIPS and Science Act. While a sizable sum, this total was less than the original $8.5 billion estimate. When Intel was awarded its grant money in November, the company said it was planning to put the funds toward manufacturing and advanced packaging, or toward techniques to assemble and integrate multiple semiconductor chips into one package. This will …

Former Intel CEO Says After Seeing DeepSeek, He’s Done With OpenAI

Former Intel CEO Says After Seeing DeepSeek, He’s Done With OpenAI

News of Chinese AI company DeepSeek’s success continues to send ripples throughout the West, tanking Nvidia’s stock valuation, spawning endless discourse, and embarrassing President Trump. Now, even American startup gurus are starting to jump ship. Pat Gelsinger, the former CEO of tech superpower Intel, says that after seeing DeepSeek’s tech, his new church startup — called, no joke, Gloo — is foregoing OpenAI’s tech in favor of an in-house model. “My Gloo engineers are running [DeepSeek’s] R1 today,” Gelsinger told TechCrunch. “They could’ve run [OpenAI’s] o1 — well, they can only access o1, through the APIs.” Gelsinger — who left Intel under a dark cloud last year as the chipmaker’s financial woes deepened — enthused that DeepSeek will lower the cost to develop similar models, decreasing the barrier to entry in the industry. And the godly CEO isn’t alone. Tech journalists have been quick to note DeepSeek’s faster and cheaper performance compared to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Even Trump admitted to eating a certain amount of crow, calling DeepSeek a “wake-up call” at a House …

Intel Officials Warned Police That US Cities Aren’t Ready for Hostile Drones

Intel Officials Warned Police That US Cities Aren’t Ready for Hostile Drones

In the memo obtained by WIRED, DHS displays less confidence in its ability to detect menacing drones. The document, which authorities were instructed not to make public, states that “tactics and technology to evade counter-UAS capabilities are circulated and sold online with little to no regulation.” In reality, the ability of police to track errant drones is hindered by a range of evolving technologies, the memo says, including “autonomous flight, 5G command and control, jamming protection technology, swarming technology, and software that disables geofencing restrictions.” The mystery in New Jersey and similar phenomena in Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland, among other states, have put a spotlight on the ongoing efforts of state and federal legislators to expand the government’s access to counter-UAS technology. Speaking to reporters via Zoom on Saturday, a DHS official said the agency is urging Congress to “extend and expand existing counter-drone authorities,” and ensure “state and local authorities are provided the tools they need to respond to such threats as well.” Currently, only a handful of federal agencies—including DHS and the …

Nvidia to replace Intel in Dow Jones Industrial Average

Nvidia to replace Intel in Dow Jones Industrial Average

Intel will lose its spot in the Dow Jones Industrial Average after a 25-year run to Nvidia, S&P Dow Jones Indices said on Friday, the latest blow to the struggling chipmaker that was among the first two technology firms to be included in the blue-chip index. Once the dominant force in chipmaking, Intel has in recent years ceded its manufacturing edge to rival TSMC and missed out on the generative artificial intelligence boom after missteps including passing on an investment in ChatGPT-owner OpenAI. Intel’s shares have declined 54 per cent this year, making it the worst performer on the index and leaving it with the lowest stock price on the price-weighted Dow. The stock fell about 1 per cent in extended trading on Friday, while Nvidia was up 1.5 per cent. Launched in 1968, the Silicon Valley pioneer sold memory chips before switching to processors that helped launch the personal computer industry. In the 1990s, “Intel Inside” stickers turned commodity electronic components into premium products, and eventually became ubiquitous on laptops. Nvidia has emerged as …

Intel Shares Fall After Cutting Q2 Revenue Estimates Over Pulled China Licenses

Intel Shares Fall After Cutting Q2 Revenue Estimates Over Pulled China Licenses

Intel provided an update on its second-quarter revenue forecast following the Biden administration’s decision to revoke its export license to supply semiconductors to Huawei. The new estimates reveal revenues will be below the midpoint of the $12.5 billion to $13.5 billion range.  Blame game… A new trend? Blame earnings weakness on Biden policies: here’s Intel pic.twitter.com/UjIdBcishc — zerohedge (@zerohedge) May 8, 2024 In an SEC filing on Wednesday, Intel revealed that the US Department of Commerce’s revoking of its license for exports to specific Chinese customers will pressure second-quarter earnings. The company now expects revenue for the quarter to “remain in the original range of $12.5 billion to $13.5 billion but below the midpoint.”  Intel added, “For full year 2024, the Company continues to expect revenue and earnings per share to grow year-over-year compared to 2023.”  This comes after an overnight report from the Financial Times that said the Biden administration “revoked export licences that allow Intel and Qualcomm to supply Huawei with semiconductors as Washington increases the pressure on the Chinese telecoms equipment company.”  People familiar with the situation said the Department of Commerce’s latest move was to pressure the supply …
