Do squats hurt your knees? A trainer says to try these four moves instead

If squats hurt your knees but you want to build stronger glutes, there are four alternative moves that you can try instead. Personal trainer Stacey Roberts, aka Fitness_momness on Instagram, has created a 20-minute home workout to strengthen the lower body without putting pressure on your knees. Stacey publishes free daily home workouts for her 952,000 Instagram followers, and also has the Fitness Momness app for on-demand exercise classes. In this knee-friendly workout, she recommends doing three sets of 12 reps, with one minute of rest in between each set. Finish all three sets of a move before you move onto the next. All you need to get started is a pair of dumbbells. How to do this no-squats glute workout Why are strong glutes important? The role of the three gluteal muscles in your butt is to help your body stay upright, move forward and back, and support pelvic alignment. Having stronger glutes is important for better hip extension and other pelvic, hip and core movements. The glutes can also help distribute load through …

We’re also taking some of the most-asked questions and answering them here on NPR.org. Electric vehicles are sometimes called “zero-emission vehicles.” But the batteries that go into them are not zero-emission at all. In fact, making those …

Prince Harry ‘Hurt and Disappointed’ About Not Seeing King Charles During UK Trip: Royal Expert (Exclusive)

Prince Harry isn’t spending time with his family while across the pond. The Duke of Sussex is currently in the UK for a ceremony to mark the 10-year anniversary of his Invictus Games, and despite having time in his schedule, he will not get an audience with his father, King Charles III, or brother Prince William during his visit. “He hasn’t got many other plans,” royal expert Katie Nicholl told ET of the duke. “He was, of course, hoping to see his family. Possibly that’s why the trip was three days… but as we now know, there will be no family meetings.” Prince Harry attends The Invictus Games Foundation 10th Anniversary Service at St Paul’s Cathedral on May 8 in London, England. – Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images Likewise, no royal family members stepped out to attend Harry’s event, which paints a stark contrast to when he launched the Games a decade ago. “When you look at the inaugural Invictus Games back in 2014… he had support from his father and from Prince William,” Nicholl said. “… You could …

Germany vows to fight violence against politicians after MEP seriously hurt | Germany

The German interior minister Nancy Faeser has vowed to fight a surge in violence against politicians after a German member of the European parliament had to be taken to hospital following an attack while he was campaigning for re-election. Matthias Ecke, 41, a member of Faeser’s Social Democrats (SPD), was hit and kicked by a group of four people while putting up posters in Dresden, capital of the eastern state of Saxony, police said. An SPD source said his injuries would require an operation. Shortly before, what appeared to be the same group attacked a 28-year-old campaigner for the Greens, who was also putting up posters, police said, although his injuries were not as serious. “The constitutional state must and will respond to this with tough action and further protective measures for the democratic forces in our country,” Faeser said in a statement, saying the attack on Ecke was also an “attack on democracy”. She vowed “tough action and further protective measures” in response to the attacks. European parliament president Roberta Metsola was one of …

Mocking college protesters was harmless — until a UCLA mob came to hurt them

Mocking college protesters was harmless — until a UCLA mob came to hurt them

Bill Maher on his HBO talk show this week said that pro-Palestinian student protests on college campuses are what happens when “activism merges with narcissism.” The Atlantic columnist David Frum referred to protesters like the UCLA students who were violently attacked Wednesday by a mob of counterprotesters as “banana-allergy revolutionaries.” During Tuesday night’s tactical police response to Columbia University students’ taking over a building on campus, author Judith Miller tweeted: “Hey Columbia protesters! If you’re so proud of what you’re doing, why are you covering your faces?” Mocking student protesters has become a fun and easy pastime since they began marching and camping out in opposition to Israel’s ongoing military incursions in Gaza following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas in Israel. All critics and jeering old folks need is a platform (cable TV, Instagram, a tattered soap box) to discredit the movement as the performative act of feckless snowflakes and spoiled children. The protective gear of the “gluten-free warriors” is a form of dress-up. Their safety measures — encampment barricades and self-manned medical tents …

US sees no indications of intent to hurt US troops building Gaza pier

US sees no indications of intent to hurt US troops building Gaza pier

Washington —  U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said late Thursday he does not see signs that Hamas is going to attack U.S. forces who are building a pier off the coast of Gaza to deliver aid to the war-torn strip by sea. “I don’t see any indications currently that there is an active intent to do that,” Austin told reporters at a press conference in Hawaii. Austin stressed that the top commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East, CENTCOM chief Gen. Erik Kurilla, has put several security measures in place to keep the troops who are building the pier and helping with aid distribution safe. “Our allies are also providing security in that area as well, and so it’s going to require that we continue to coordinate with them very closely to ensure that if anything happens that, you know, our troops are protected,” Austin said. The new port is just southwest of Gaza City. Last week a mortar attack targeted the port site but officials said no one was hurt. “This is an …

Teachers hurt in Welsh school stabbing speak of incident’s ‘enormous impact’ | Wales

Two teachers injured in a stabbing at a Welsh school have said they are struggling to comprehend what happened, and spoke of the “enormous impact” the incident has had on their “wonderful” pupils and colleagues. Fiona Elias and Liz Hopkin paid tribute to emergency services workers and NHS staff after the stabbings in the playground at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire. The pair and a student were taken to hospital but have been discharged. Elias, the assistant headteacher, said: “From the bottom of my heart, my family and I would like to say a huge thank you for all the messages we have received from far and wide over the past few days. I am deeply indebted to the police, ambulance service, and the NHS staff in Morriston [a hospital in Swansea] for their excellent care and quick response. “Many thanks also to the air ambulance for their excellent care of my colleague, Liz. This is another example of how vital this service is to us in Wales. Three of us were taken to …

Trump’s sordid hush-money defense: Tales from his sleazy past could hurt him doubly

Trump’s sordid hush-money defense: Tales from his sleazy past could hurt him doubly

Donald Trump held a little rally at a construction site in New York before his trial commenced on Thursday morning. He glad-handed the workers and passed out pamphlets that claimed he would end Biden’s electric vehicle mandate. They all seemed to like him but, of course, they would, as Fox News reported that the attendees were solicited and vetted by the Trump campaign. In fact one of the “workers” interviewed at the event was a former staffer of disgraced GOP congressman George Santos: In other words, it was just another example of Trump fake news, which has been revealed in his Manhattan hush-money trial as a specialty of his going back decades.  Trump was very upset that he had to attend Thursday’s trial proceeding since his Supreme Court immunity case was being argued before the Supreme Court at the same time and he had wanted to attend. Unfortunately, he’s a criminal defendant and doesn’t get the privilege of making his schedule of court appearances around the country as he’s used to doing. Instead, he had to face …
