CEO Says Work Weeks Should Be Seventy Hours

CEO Says Work Weeks Should Be Seventy Hours

Most people struggle with adhering to the standard 40-hour work weeks, but a tech CEO has suggested that instead of listening to the mass cries for better work-life balance and employers realizing that overworking their staff won’t lead to better results, companies should instead require their employees spend even more hours in the office.  Despite the overwhelming research and data that suggests otherwise, Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of a tech company called Infosys, stands by his work ethic. A tech CEO claimed that work weeks should be 70 hours because he ‘doesn’t believe in work/life balance.’ According to TechSpot, the Indian entrepreneur faced a bit of criticism after claiming that there are benefits to working every hour that you’re awake. He had previously insisted that young people should work 70-hour weeks and doubled down on those comments by saying that he doesn’t “believe in work/life balance.” In October 2023, Murthy explained that young people should work twelve-hour days for the “next 20 years, 50 years, whatever it is,” out of respect and a sense of …

Will you get an extra hour’s sleep this weekend? Probably not, new research says

Will you get an extra hour’s sleep this weekend? Probably not, new research says

A lot of people dread the clocks going back an hour in winter – but reassure themselves that at least they’ll get an extra hour’s sleep. However, in my new study my colleagues and I found most people do not (or can not) take advantage of the full extra hour of sleep in autumn. Daylight saving time is the practice of moving the clocks one hour forward in spring and one hour back in autumn. It was introduced during the first world war as a way to cut energy costs. It is in operation in around 70 countries and affects a quarter of the world’s population. This “springing forward” and “falling back” is widely thought of a loss of one hour of sleep in spring and a gain of one hour of sleep in autumn. However, research suggests we may lose sleep for about a week after both clock changes as we struggle to adapt to the new time. Previous studies have relied on people reporting their own sleep patterns in diaries or surveys. However, …

Hear 2.5 Hours of the Classical Music in Haruki Murakami’s Novels: Liszt, Beethoven, Janáček, and More

Hear 2.5 Hours of the Classical Music in Haruki Murakami’s Novels: Liszt, Beethoven, Janáček, and More

Haruki Murakami’s hit novel 1Q84 features a memorable scene in a taxicab on a gridlocked freeway whose radio is playing Leoš Janáček’s Sinfonietta. “It is, as the book suggests, truly the worst possible music for a traffic jam,” writes Sam Anderson in a New York Times Magazine profile of the novelist: “busy, upbeat, dramatic — like five normal songs fighting for supremacy inside an empty paint can.” Murakami tells Anderson that he “chose the Sinfonietta because that is not a popular music at all. But after I published this book, the music became popular in this country… Mr. Seiji Ozawa thanked me. His record has sold well.” In addition to being a world-famous conductor, the late Ozawa was also, as it happens, a personal friend of Murakami’s; the two even published a book, Absolutely on Music, that transcribes a series of their conversations about the former’s vocation and the latter’s avocation, a distinction with an unclear boundary in Murakami’s case. “I have lots of friends who love music, but Haruki takes it way beyond the bounds of sanity,” writes …

Liam Payne: Grief as picture begins to emerge of singer’s final hours | Ents & Arts News

The third floor room at the Casa Sur hotel where Liam Payne was staying is now sealed off with police tape. Hotel guests walk up and down the corridor but a police officer is on guard to ensure nobody interferes with what is still the scene of an active investigation. How and why did the One Direction star plummet to his death from the balcony of this room and was there any third-party involvement? A 911 emergency call has already been leaked in which a hotel worker expresses concern for a guest who he believes to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. It is part of a stark picture emerging of the 31-year-old’s final hours. Image: Fans of Payne mourn his death in Argentina. Liam Payne posted on social media in hours before death | Ents & Arts News

Former One Direction star Liam Payne was posting on Snapchat just hours before his death in Buenos Aires. The 31-year-old singer died outside a hotel in Argentina’s capital, after falling from the third floor of a hotel, police said. On Snapchat, he spoke to his followers about his plans for one of his days on holiday, saying it was a “lovely day in Argentina” and he planned to play polo. The videos appear to be posted days after they were filmed, as they feature Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy, who uploaded videos of her return to Florida on social media earlier in the week. Lifechanging treatment repairs cartilage damage in less than 4 hours

Lifechanging treatment repairs cartilage damage in less than 4 hours

This approach has now been extended to human cartilage cells. The treatment activated gene expression necessary for cartilage regeneration within four hours, and after just three days, the cells produced protein components vital for this process. The research revealed that the effectiveness of the treatment increased with the motion of the molecules, indicating that the “dancing” motion is crucial for triggering cartilage growth. This study was published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Cartilage cells generate more protein components (collagen II and aggrecan) for regeneration when treated with fast-moving dancing molecules (left) compared to slower moving molecules. (CREDIT: Stupp Research Group/Northwestern University) “When we first observed therapeutic effects of dancing molecules, we did not see any reason why it should only apply to the spinal cord,” said Samuel I. Stupp, who led the study. “Now, we observe the effects in two cell types that are completely disconnected from one another — cartilage cells in our joints and neurons in our brain and spinal cord. This makes me more confident that we might have …

The Knowledge. New data sheds light on hours spent at school

The Knowledge. New data sheds light on hours spent at school

More from this theme Recent articles In 2022, the then government laid out a new expectation that state-funded mainstream schools should deliver a school week of at least 32.5 hours from this term. Now, new census data allows us for the first time to better understand the length of the school week across the country and its relationship with pupil outcomes. Earlier this year we examined what the international research tells us about the length of the school week and its impact on pupil attainment and wider outcomes. It showed that the effects of providing additional school time, which encompasses instruction time and extracurricular activities, are varied but broadly positive with the diversity of effects often being attributed to variations in the timing, manner, and nature of the activities during these extended hours. Previous research has also shown that the effect of increasing school hours varies depending on the subject being taught. Crucially for those interested in tackling the persistent disadvantage gap, extending the school day tends to have a more pronounced impact on the …

Lift Schools CEO calls for review of teacher hours limit

Lift Schools CEO calls for review of teacher hours limit

The boss of one of the country’s biggest academy trusts has suggested the “archaic” directed time cap for teachers should be reviewed, saying “if we want to be seen as a profession we can’t continue to rigidly count hours”. Becks Boomer-Clark, chief executive of Lift Schools, said instead of “counting hours”, Gen Z teachers want “flexibility, fluidity, a sense of purpose”. Directed time is the number of hours in a year during which school leaders can direct teachers to be at work and available for work. The Conservative government had explored ditching the cap in 2021, but a union leader said at the time any move would be “met with fury in the profession”. But Boomer-Clark, speaking at Labour conference fringe event today, said: “I’m not sure there are as many professions that count hours, and that’s one of the really challenging things, I think, in terms of breaking us free. “Recognising actually what learning looks like, seeing time as an absolutely finite resource, but actually also acting as professionals if we want to be …
