Holy Year about to start in Rome

Holy Year about to start in Rome

VATICAN CITY —  Pope Francis on Tuesday formally inaugurates the 2025 Holy Year, reviving an ancient church tradition encouraging the faithful to make pilgrimages to Rome, amid new security fears following a Christmas market attack in Germany. At the start of Christmas Eve Mass, Francis will push open the Holy Door on St. Peter’s Basilica, which will stay open throughout the year to allow the estimated 32 million pilgrims projected to visit Rome to pass through. FILE – Pope Francis pushes open the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, formally launching the Holy Year of Mercy, at the Vatican, Dec. 8, 2015. The first Holy Year was called in 1300, and in recent times they are generally celebrated every 25 to 50 years. Pilgrims who participate can obtain “indulgences” — the centuries-old feature of the Catholic Church related to the forgiveness of sins that roughly amounts to a “get out of Purgatory free” card. The last regular Jubilee was in 2000, when St. John Paul II ushered in the church’s third millennium. Francis declared a …

Pope Francis to make new saints, emphasizing a devotion to the Holy Spirit

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Pope Francis will create 14 new saints on Sunday (Oct. 20) who have in common a calling to spread the gospel and a special devotion to the Holy Spirit, the key themes of a major monthlong summit of bishops and Catholic leaders at the Vatican. The canonizations are an opportunity for the pope to underline important aspects of his synod on the theme of synodality, aimed at answering the question: “How to become a synodal church in mission?” Bishops, priests, nuns and lay people gathered at the Vatican this month to address this question. The Rev. Giuseppe Allamano (1851-1926) was on the path to sainthood early on. His uncle was St. Joseph Cafasso, and his spiritual director was St. John Bosco, who founded the Order of the Salesians focusing on helping young people steer clear of delinquency. Allamano longed to become a missionary priest, but his poor health didn’t allow him to travel, forcing him to focus his attention on the Italian city of Turin. He founded the Consolata Missionaries and …

Holy Spirit descends on Day of Pentecost by Anthony van Dyck, 1618, Wikipedia, Public Domain Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. — Romans 8:26 By Rick Renner To whom do you go for help when you feel trapped, cornered, or pinned against the wall because of a situation you’ve fallen into? In moments like that, do you feel overwhelmed with a sense of desperation, or do you know where to turn for help? I want to speak to you about the supernatural intercessory ministry of the Holy Spirit. But today I’m not talking about prayer when I use the phrase “intercessory ministry.” I am talking about a very special, unique work of the Holy Spirit that is available to help you every day — especially in times when you’re feeling backed into a corner by situations in life. Romans 8:26 says, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we …

Yemisi Ogunleye at 2022 shot put eventCredit: Steffen Prößdorf, Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0 Throughout the Old Testament, there were times when people were endued with special Holy Spirit anointing to perform specific tasks. At times, these seemed outside the domain typically associated with the Spirit’s anointing, such as prophecy and leadership. This included Bezalel, who worked on the Tabernacle of Moses, and was filled with “the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all craftsmanship;” (Exodus 35:31). In this instance, he was anointed for a specific task. Samson was also anointed with amazing strength by the Holy Spirit. We read of his encounter with a lion when, “the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, so that he tore it apart as one tears apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand; but he did not tell his father or mother what he had done” (Judges 14:6 NASV). In Samson’s case, there were times when this anointing lifted, and he would lose this ability (Judges 16:20), revealing that …

FOLLOW OUR PODCAST ON (search opentheword): PODCAST NOTES: Hi, my name is Dean Smith and in this podcast, I want to talk about one of the more controversial Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the gift of Tongues. A friend, Jim Marteniuk, told me about his intriguing encounter with tongues a few years back. But before I tell that story, let’s define the gift of tongues. It is a gift that allows people to speak in a language they do not know through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can also provide a gift of interpretation through which these tongues can be interpreted. Tongues can come in basically two forms. It can appear as an actual human language which is what happened on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit fell upon 120 disciples of Jesus. That group poured into the streets of …

Is singing in tongues, a sign the Holy Spirit is moving during our church service? – OpentheWord.org

Is singing in tongues, a sign the Holy Spirit is moving during our church service? – OpentheWord.org

Credit: Chad Kirchoff, unsplash.com Over the past several months, we have seen the Holy Spirit moving in Universities across the US, with thousands of young people being saved and water baptized. But there is something else happening as well. The Holy Spirit is moving in local churches. I have noticed it in the church that my wife and I attend, as we are sensing the Holy Spirit’s presence in our worship times, in a way we haven’t seen before. Over the past few months, I have even started doing something I have never done before during worship. I found myself singing along in tongues. Now I sing in tongues to myself, so as not to disrupt others (1 Corinthians 14:28). While this was very unusual for me, it seems that it was standard practice in the early church. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul tells us that praying in the spirit, is the same thing as speaking in tongues, “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive. …

Have you sprung a leak? Do you need to be refilled with the Holy Spirit? – OpentheWord.org

Holy Spirit falling on Day of Pentecost by El Greco, 1600, Wikipedia, Public Domain It is hard to tell how much time had passed between when the Holy Spirit fell on the Day of Pentecost and Acts 4 when Peter and John healed the lame man lying in the temple. I think that it was just a matter of a few days. With that in mind, we read an intriguing verse in Acts 4, when Luke forgot to add one keyword, ‘again’ to the verse when he talked about what happened at a prayer meeting recorded in that chapter. “And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.“ (Acts 4:31 NASV) Luke writes that they were all filled with the Holy Spirit at the second prayer meeting. But technically, he should have added the word ‘again’, because just a few days earlier, we read that on the Day of Pentecost the …

120 | The Holy Spirit: My Brief Encounter with the Gift of Faith FOLLOW OUR PODCAST ON (search opentheword): PODCAST NOTES: Hi, my name is Dean Smith and I want to discuss my brief encounter with the Gift of Faith, which is one of the nine spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit handed out to members of the Body of Christ who have been filled with the Holy Spirit mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12. This includes the gift of tongues, interpretation of tongues, discerning of spirits, words of knowledge and wisdom, prophecy, miracles, and the gift of faith. Paul states that every person receives at least one of these gifts or manifestations of the Spirit of God. Of course, some like the gift of tongues or healing are simple to understand. But how does the gift of faith function? I hope to use what I believe was my one and only encounter with this gift to explain how it works and as well its purpose. About three decades ago, my wife and I had moved …

Many would probably agree that for the most part, the North American church is not moving in the same Holy Spirit power as we see demonstrated in the early Church through the Book of Acts. While some wonder why this is happening, others argue that it is not only true but to be expected. Over the last few months, we have seen a significant push against the spiritual gifts and the filling of the Holy Spirit by those in the church referred to as cessationists or those who believe that the spiritual gifts are not for today. Now they still believe that God can perform miracles, but are convinced …
