Can the Southern Baptist church’s declining membership be due to its fight with the Holy Spirit?

[ad_1] The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) finally has some good news, the number of people being water baptized in the famed denomination has nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels, ChurchLeaders.com reports. Last year, over 226,000 people were water baptized, an increase of 26% over the previous year. This is a reason to celebrate in a denomination that includes water baptism as part of its name. However, there was also some bad news. For the 17th year in a row, the denomination’s membership declined, sinking below the 13 million mark for the first time since the 70s. Though membership shrunk by 1.8% in 2023, a loss of about a quarter of a million, it was less than in previous years, so there was a hint of good news in the midst of the bad. A strange thing started happening in 2006, for the first time in its storied history that traces back to the 1800s, the SBC’s membership started declining. From its peak of 16.3 million members, it has declined every year since. Now, we could blame …

My mother spends her days serving a ‘holy man’. How can I make her see he is not a positive force? | Australian lifestyle

[ad_1] My 62-year-old mother has formed an attachment with a man 20 years her junior (let’s call him Luke). It is not romantic. She spends around 12 hours a day at his house, cooking his meals and cleaning. Luke inherited his house and a sizeable trust fund. He has rather lavish tastes. Airport transfers, costly grocery shops and seemingly endless home improvements are all provided by my mother. My mother met Luke at a prayer group and believes he is a very holy man; she seems to idolise him. Increasingly, she makes little attempt to see family. She expresses concerns about her finances and health, but refuses to open up about how much he pays her or how much she spends on his lifestyle. She refuses to ask for days off. Dad died seven years ago. It is as if Luke has replaced Dad. Mum seems constantly tired and irritable and no longer has time or energy for anyone else. She is also expressing concerning and uncharacteristic opinions of which many are intolerant and discriminatory. …

The Holy Spirit is continuing to move on Gen Z at the University of Tennessee

[ad_1] University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TNCredit: w_lemay, Wikpedia, CC BY-SA 2.0 Deed Despite the negative reports of the rampant violence and antisemitism occurring in American universities, we have another report on how the Holy Spirit is moving on university campuses. This involves a recent outpouring at the University of Tennessee on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, CBN reports. Over 8,000 students gathered at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, TN, which saw hundreds of students respond, and 150 get water baptized. This was the last event of the year for the semester, and it was obvious many students were impacted. “We have been waiting for a move like this all school year,” a student told FOX & Friends. “At the finale of the event we were singing ‘Speak the Name of Jesus’ and students just rushed to the front. I brought my buddy and it brought us to our knees. There are just no words for the experience.” “Just seeing the presence of the Lord fill the room and how people from all different backgrounds came together for …

The Holy Grail and Ark of Covenant could be buried beneath this English house

(CREDIT: Creative Commons) In a breathtaking discovery, esteemed historian and anthropologist David Adkins has begun a daring journey that could unveil a fabled trove, rumored to encompass the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail, concealed beneath the venerable Sinai Park House near Burton. Famed for his earlier unearthing of the 10,000-year-old skull “Greta,” David Adkins entertains the conviction that the elusive treasures of the Knights Templar might lie hidden within a complex network of subterranean passages and chambers beneath this grand estate. Sinai Park House, a majestic landmark in Burton, is believed to rest upon caverns of such vastness that they could potentially rival the size of Westminster Abbey, as asserted by a geologist. This revelation has piqued the interest of both historians and treasure hunters alike, as they contemplate the implications of such a discovery. Actress Candace Bure talks about how the Holy Spirit is invading Hollywood

[ad_1] Candace Cameron Bure in March 2018 Credit: Gage Skidmore/Flickr/Creative Commons 2.0 In an interview with CBN, Christian actress Candace Bure stated that she has seen a growing interest in Christianity in Hollywood recently. In particular, the former Fuller House star talked about actress Danica McKellar’s decision to become a Christian due in part to Bure’s influence. Danica starred in the popular TV series, Wonder Years. “It’s pretty incredible from the people that I’ve walked hand-in-hand with and encouraged along the way,” Bure said. “And just to have a small part of knowing that I planted a seed, or maybe spoke a word that encouraged them along to become a believer — or strengthen their faith in Christ.” Bure also talked about her recent involvement in Christian movies, which she had purposefully avoided because of their poor quality. But that changed recently. “Within the last, I would say, five years, the quality is incredible,” Bure told CBN. “It’s like people of faith are coming out of the woodwork.” This led to Bure’s decision to serve …

When the Holy Spirit Comes, Expect Criticism

When the Holy Spirit Comes, Expect Criticism

[ad_1] Credit: Paul Bulai-unsplash.com By Dr. Michael Brown Christians worldwide are now in the period between Easter and Pentecost. (On the Jewish calendar, Passover begins April 22, with Pentecost — Shavuot in Hebrew — beginning June 11.) During this period of time 2,000 years ago, the disciples were told to wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit, without which they could not complete their mission (see Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8.) Similarly, today, many Christians are praying for a fresh outpouring of the Spirit, recognizing that without it, they, too, cannot complete their mission. But what can we expect when the Spirit comes? Will His work be accepted by all? Revealing Hearts When the newborn Jesus was being dedicated in the Temple, an old Jewish man named Simeon told His mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke …

Despair in the Holy Land

Despair in the Holy Land

[ad_1] (RNS) — It is easy to despair over the Holy Land. For almost 80 years it has been a festering sore, and today, after decades of peace efforts, there is no end in sight. After the genocide inflicted on Jews by the Nazis during World War II, Jews wanted a homeland where they could be self-governing and safe. Returning to Israel, their original homeland until the destruction of the Jewish state by the Roman Empire, was a longed-for hope. For a variety of reasons (guilt, sympathy, geopolitical gamesmanship and even antisemitism), the West supported a Jewish homeland. Worries about the Palestinians currently living in what had been ancient Israel were put aside. From a nation of refugees surrounded by enemies, Israel has grown into an economic and military powerhouse. A democratic ally to the United States, it has come to be seen as a bulwark against Iran. But the Palestinian question remains. Many were pushed as refugees into Jordan. Others live under dire circumstances in the West Bank and Gaza. Angry at the loss …

Teenager finds ‘holy grail’ Lego octopus from 1997 spill off Cornwall coast | Lego

[ad_1] A 13-year-old boy has discovered a “holy grail” Lego octopus which spilled into the sea from a shipping container in the 1990s. The octopus is one of nearly 5m Lego pieces that fell into the sea in 1997 when a storm hit a cargo ship 20 miles off Land’s End, Cornwall. While 352,000 pairs of flippers, 97,500 scuba tanks, and 92,400 swords went overboard, the octopuses are considered the most prized finds as only 4,200 were onboard. Liutauras Cemolonskas has collected 789 pieces of the collection over the past two years, alongside numerous fossils. The Cornish teenager made the octopus discovery on a beach in Marazion on one of his regular trips with his parents. His father, Vytautas, 36, told the PA Media news agency: “We’ve been looking for that octopus for two years, it’s not easy to find. We were not expecting to find it at all because it’s very rare.” Liutauras Cemolonskas, centre, with his father, Vytautas, and mother, Edita on the beach at Marazion with St Michael’s Mount in the background. …
