The One Thing Holding Back Heat Pumps

The One Thing Holding Back Heat Pumps

So the demand is there, as is growing support from the federal and state governments. What’s lagging is the workforce—at least temporarily. And the US is nowhere near alone: Wherever heat pump adoption is growing, more workers need to train up to meet demand. “If you look at a place like, say, Finland, where pretty much all your heating systems are heat pumps, this is not really an issue anymore,” says Jan Rosenow, who studies electrification at the Regulatory Assistance Project, a policy NGO for the energy community. “If you wanted to buy an electric car 10 years ago, it was quite difficult, wasn’t it? Now, you can go to any showroom and you can find them. I think the same is going to be the case with heat pumps. It’s already the case with heat pumps in more mature markets.” In the US, though, we don’t have some sort of giant, national program to quickly get more people trained in HVAC. “It would just make sense that there would be this path to learn …

Trump posts campaign ad praising UNC students holding up US flag during campus protest

Former President Trump posted a campaign ad on his Truth Social site praising various counter protestors on college campuses, including students who held up the U.S. flag. “While campuses struggle to get control of their students, at UNC Chapel Hill, they are bringing order back,” the video begins. The ad shows clips of pro-Palestinian students protesting across the country. It then shows photos and videos of students at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill who held up the American flag at their campus’ demonstration. Members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity were seen in viral posts holding up an American flag while activists threw items at them. The incident occurred Tuesday, when pro-Palestinian supporters replaced the American flag with a Palestinian flag. The scene resonated with people across the country, and a GoFundMe was set up to throw the fraternity “a Rager.” It’s raised over $500,000 so far, including a $10,000 donation from billionaire investor Bill Ackman. The ad continued, splicing together news segments from Fox News and “Primetime with Jesse Watters,” where they …

Holding a placard outside court isn’t illegal, judge rules – is that the best British democracy has to offer?

Holding a placard outside court isn’t illegal, judge rules – is that the best British democracy has to offer?

The UK High Court recently dismissed the case against environmental activist Trudi Warner, who was referred for contempt of court in March 2023. Civil liberties campaigners hailed the decision as a “huge win for democracy”, but is it? Warner had stood outside the Old Bailey, England’s most important criminal court in central London, with a sign that read “Jurors have an absolute right to acquit according to their conscience”. She did so at the start of a trial of climate activists who had been charged with public nuisance for obstructing traffic. Warner’s sign paraphrased the text on a plaque on display at the Old Bailey itself. Warner outside the Old Bailey. Emily Pennink/PA Images/Alamy Stock Photo Known as jury equity, the legal principle evoked by this statement dates back to 1670 and is often cited, not least by leading legal figures and in the decisions of the higher courts, as a cornerstone of English democracy: juries can decide according to their conscience, and cannot be bullied into finding as the law dictates. Indeed, many legal …

Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf to reject pact with Alex Salmond’s Alba Party – despite it holding key to his fate | Politics News

Humza Yousaf will refuse to enter an electoral pact with Alex Salmond’s party that could have seen the SNP step aside in some Scottish seats, Sky News understands. The Alba Party, headed by Mr Salmond, is likely to have the deciding vote in a key vote of no confidence in the SNP first minister at Holyrood this week. It is on a knife-edge. Its only MSP, Ash Regan, is to make a set of demands to Mr Yousaf and one of those demands included her rivals step aside in some seats to allow Alba to be elected. On Sunday, Mr Salmond told Sky News his party would be “prepared to assist” Mr Yousaf in a no-confidence vote “as long as independence is restored as the key priority of the Scottish government”. He said Ms Regan – who defected from the SNP in the wake of her defeat in the race to replace Nicola Sturgeon last year – had found herself in “a highly influential position”. Experts: Trump associates “in a world of hurt” — may cooperate after they’re “left holding the bag”

Experts: Trump associates “in a world of hurt” — may cooperate after they’re “left holding the bag”

Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, attorney Rudy Giuliani and other associates of former President Donald Trump were indicted Wednesday in Arizona over efforts to overturn his 2020 electoral defeat in the state.  An Arizona grand jury handed down charges, including felony counts of conspiracy, fraud and forgery, against 18 total defendants, 11 of whom were fake electors, according to The New York Times. Trump, who faces criminal charges in Georgia and federal charges over alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election, is also referenced as “unindicted co-conspirator 1.” The 58-page indictment makes Arizona the fourth state to bring an election interference case over the Trump campaign’s activities in 2020, but only the second — after Georgia — to charge more than the false electors the campaign enlisted in the states Trump lost.  “I think it’s a righteous indictment, but it certainly didn’t need to take this long” to charge, former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told Salon. “Now, they’re going to be really at the back of the line in terms of criminal cases.” …

America’s Child Care Crisis Is Holding Back Moms Without College Degrees

America’s Child Care Crisis Is Holding Back Moms Without College Degrees

AUBURN, Wash. (AP) — After a series of lower-paying jobs, Nicole Slemp finally landed one she loved. She was a secretary for Washington’s child services department, a job that came with her own cubicle, and she had a knack for working with families in difficult situations. Slemp expected to return to work after having her son in August. But then she and her husband started looking for child care – and doing the math. The best option would cost about $2,000 a month, with a long wait list, and even the least expensive option around $1,600, still eating up most of Slemp’s salary. Her husband earns about $35 an hour at a hose distribution company. Between them, they earned too much to qualify for government help. “I really didn’t want to quit my job,” says Slemp, 33, who lives in a Seattle suburb. But, she says, she felt like she had no choice. Even so, women’s participation in the workforce has recovered from the pandemic, reaching historic highs in December 2023. But that masks a …

You’re holding your iPhone – and AirPods – all wrong. Try this

You’re holding your iPhone – and AirPods – all wrong. Try this

Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/ZDNET Phones have been around for such a long time that everyone has their own way of handling them, holding them, and storing them. Many people believe in holding them with one hand and poking at them with the index finger of the other. Others are single-handed phone users. Also: The best iPhone 15 screen protectors you can buy: Expert tested Then there’s the storage part. Many slip their phones into their back pocket, something I find a touch uncomfortable and insecure. Me? I’m a front-pocket person. And all that my approach seems to require is, well, having a pocket big enough and a phone that isn’t too big. Yet what had clearly escaped me is that there’s an entirely different — and apparently fashionable — way of dealing with your iPhone on a regular basis. It’s the phone pouch. I had heard of such a concept, but only in the context of kids being told to put their phones away in magnetic pouches at school. Imagine my surprise, then, at encountering …
