Hochul Yanks Cornell Case From Local DA, Hands It To Letitia James – Who Already Picked A Side

Published by Jenni Sidey

The Cornell fraternity case that was coming apart at the seams this week has a new prosecutor. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order Thursday night appointing state Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor in the alleged Cornell sexual assault case, effectively removing Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten from it. “Tonight, I signed an executive order appointing Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor in the Cornell sexual assault case,” Hochul posted on X. “New information has raised serious questions about how this case was handled, and I’ve lost faith in the Tompkins County DA’s ability” to handle it. Hochul said the newly released information “undercut my faith, and the public’s faith” in the DA’s ability to investigate and prosecute the case, and went further: “Who knew what when? What did they do wrong? Why didn’t they come forward? How was this woman denied justice?” Her case against the locals rests on two claims. First, that the woman’s own statement that she was raped “never made it into the account that Cornell …

‘I watched my best friend disappear slowly at the hands of an abuser’

In cases of domestic abuse, our hearts naturally (and rightfully) go out to the people who have been through it. We want to take their hand, hold them close, and support them through it. The experience is unimaginable to many – and the impact abuse can have on friends and family is deep and devastating too. To mark Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, we spoke to 36-year-old survivor Rosie, and her best friend, Holly, about what they went through during the five years Rosie was in an abusive relationship with the father of her two children. © Getty Images “For five years, I watched my best friend of twenty years disappear slowly,” Holly says. “Seeing the person you love become a shell of themselves is a heartbreak I still can’t find the words for. I knew the beautiful, confident, hilarious, fiercely intelligent and deeply kind person I’d grown up with was still there, but she was buried beneath anxiety, isolation and survival.” ‘I was tiptoeing around a minefield’ Over the course of their five-year relationship, Rosie …

Michelle Pfeiffer made a radiant appearance alongside her husband, David E. Kelley, as the couple attended The Nat Gala at Halo 28 on September 20. The 68-year-old actress held hands with the television writer and producer as they posed for photographs, wearing a printed blazer with rust-coloured trousers and a glossy blue blouse. Her tailored jacket featured structured shoulders and a painterly design, with shades of grey, cream and mauve blending into burnt orange around the cuffs and hem. She wore it open over her blouse, which was tucked into high-waisted, wide-leg trousers. Michelle kept one hand in her pocket while holding David’s with the other. The long trousers fell over neutral-toned shoes, while her blonde hair was parted in the centre and styled in loose waves over her shoulders. Soft pink lipstick and warm-toned eye make-up completed her evening look. © Getty ImagesDavid E. Trump Has a Deal to Build US Military Presence in Greenland While Leaving Island in Denmark’s Hands

Trump Has a Deal to Build US Military Presence in Greenland While Leaving Island in Denmark’s Hands

Published by Sam Flores

Trump in a social media post announcing the deal said the emerging agreement “gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns.” He added that with the agreement his administration would “immediately” begin the process of developing a larger military presence on the mineral-rich Danish territory. The deal came after officials from U.S., Greenland and Denmark quietly negotiated for months behind the scenes, searching for solutions to address some of Trump’s security concerns about a territory of roughly 56,000 residents. For Trump, the Greenland issue had largely been put on the back burner as he launched a military operation to oust former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power and joined with Israel to start a war against Iran. The office of Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said the deal will be signed by all three governments next week during the United Nations General Assembly, but parliamentary action is still needed by the Danish and Greenland governments before it can be enforced. The Prince and Princess of Wales took part in a beach litter pick, getting their hands dirty and driving a tractor to help clear refuse in picturesque Ettrick Bay on the Isle of Bute. On the second stop of their visit to the Hebridean island, William and Kate joined members of Beachwatch Bute, an organisation that has helped keep the island’s beaches free from litter and marine waste for almost 30 years. They walked along the sand with Beach Ranger Sandra Macmillan and supporters of the charity, which has coordinated clean-up activities on Bute since 1998, to keep the coastline safe and accessible for wildlife and local people.  Armed with litter pickers and recycled farm feed bags to hold the rubbish, they stopped to pick up bits of packaging and rope and used their bare hands to pick up finer plastic filaments from fishing gear as they heard more about the charity’s work. © Getty ImagesPrince William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales take part in a beach clean-up during a royal visit …

Meta tests out putting fact-checking in users’ hands across Latin America – Truth or Fake

Published by Sam Flores

Meta is expanding its shift away from professional fact-checking. The tech giant announced it’s trialling it’s crowdsourced “Community Notes” system across 16 countries in Latin America. Meta says the system will only fully roll out once it is confident it works, but critics warn that with misinformation, manipulated images and AI-generated content spreading rapidly, crowdsourced checks may come too late to prevent false claims from reaching millions. Vedika Bahl explains the risks. The list covers Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The move is part of Meta’s wider effort to replace its network of professional fact-checking partners with a system that puts more responsibility for identifying misleading content in the hands of its users. The company began recruiting contributors in the region on Wednesday. But during the initial testing phase, Community Notes will not be visible to the wider public. Meta has not given a timeline for a full rollout, saying it will expand the system once it is confident it works effectively. …
