Teachers who leverage AI for guidance and lesson plans feel more effective

Teachers can use generative AI in a variety of ways. They may use it to develop lesson plans and quizzes. Or teachers may rely on a generative AI tool, such as ChatGPT, for insight on how to teach a concept more effectively. In our new research, only the teachers doing both of those things reported feeling that they were getting more done. They also told us that their teaching was more effective with AI. Over the course of the 2023-2024 school year, we followed 24 teachers at K-12 schools throughout the United States as they wrestled with whether and how to use generative AI for their work. We gave them a standard training session on generative AI in the fall of 2023. We then conducted multiple observations, interviews and surveys throughout the year. We found that teachers felt more productive and effective with generative AI when they turned to it for advice. The standard methods to teach to state standards that work for one student, or in one school year, might not work as well …

Rolls Royce repeats full year guidance despite challenging supply chain environment

Rolls Royce repeats full year guidance despite challenging supply chain environment

British engineering giant Rolls Royce said it expects to meet its full year 2024 guidance as it continues “at pace” on its transformation programme, aiming to create a “high-performing, competitive, resilient and growing business”. The company, which has sites in Bristol and Birmingham, said current trading was in line with expectations and it repeated guidance provided in August this year of operating profit between £2.1bn and £2.3bn and free cash flow between £2.1bn and £2.2bn. This was despite the supply chain environment which remains challenging, noted CEO Tufan Erginbilgic in the trading update for the period to end-October. “We are also making good progress towards our mid-term targets, with a front-end loaded delivery of profit and cash flow improvements. “There is more we still need and want to do, as we expand the earnings and cash potential of Rolls-Royce,” he added. In civil aerospace, Rolls said demand remained strong across business aviation and widebody with large engine flying hours growing by 18% year-on-year to 102% of 2019 levels for the 10 months to October 31 …

Amazon Jumps On Record AWS Profit Margin, Solid Holiday Quarter Guidance

Amazon Jumps On Record AWS Profit Margin, Solid Holiday Quarter Guidance

As we noted in our preview earlier, Hedge Funds are getting picky into the quarter. While most were short as given a perceived miss below Street for Q4 EBIT, some have covered as downside (if any) would be short-lived with investors having messaged a “buy-the-dip” mentality. Investors are starting to understand the variability of operating income and there is a general agreement that this is the best capital allocator in the space, so would rather Amazon invest than harvest profit dollars. The bull case continues to center around prospects for faster gross merchandise value growth and share gains on higher level of service amidst ongoing fulfillment regionalization efforts in the US and eventual global rollout; ongoing margin expansion in Amazon’s ecommerce franchise due to improving unit economics; new high margin revenue stream from Prime Video with ads – although still in its early innings it should become a meaningful contributor over time, especially as content costs are already incorporated in the model. Investors are also focused on the payouts through the investment cycle with AWS …

Temenos lowers full-year guidance after impact of short seller report

Temenos lowers full-year guidance after impact of short seller report

:Swiss banking software firm Temenos lowered its guidance for 2024 on Tuesday, citing its half-year performance which was impacted by a short seller report by Hindenburg Research. “While we did benefit from all the delayed Q1-24 deals signing in Q2-24, this was offset by the two month delay in most sales processes due to the short seller report,” CFO Takis Spiliopoulos said in a statement. Temenos now expects total software licensing growth between 3 per cent and 6 per cent, down from 7 per cent to 10 per cent in its guidance from February. It also expects annual recurring revenue of 13 per cent, down from 15 per cent originally. Temenos also reported second quarter results, including subscription revenue of $39.2 million, missing analysts’ estimate of $45 million in a company-compiled consensus. Jean-Pierre Brulard, whose appointment as CEO took effect in May, added that Temenos started to review its operational and financial strategy and will present a detailed investment plan at its capital markets day in November. Proposed sex education guidance in England goes against evidence and may well lead to harm

Proposed sex education guidance in England goes against evidence and may well lead to harm

The UK government has released new plans for relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) in primary and secondary schools in England. This would see age parameters introduced for key issues in sex education, with no education on sex at all for children under the age of nine. A consultation on these plans has been launched. If adopted, this guidance will diminish years of progress in how young people are educated about sex and relationships – education that keeps them safe. The recommendations set out in the policy are in direct conflict with many years of research in this area of education. The age limits in the new draft guidance set out that puberty should not be taught before year four, when pupils are aged eight and nine. Sex education, which should be in line with what children learn in science about conception and birth – the “factual description of conception in the science curriculum” – shouldn’t be taught before year five, when children are nine and ten. Issues regarding sexual harassment shouldn’t be taught before …

GAG pooling: DfE considers issuing guidance

Move would give leaders ‘more support’ over how to handle academy cash, says official Move would give leaders ‘more support’ over how to handle academy cash, says official More from this theme Recent articles The Department for Education is considering drawing up GAG pooling guidance following controversies over the amounts trusts take from school budgets. The move would give leaders “more support” over how to handle academy cash, said Lindsey Henning, director of schools financial support and oversight at the Education and Skills Funding Agency. Most MATs top-slice their schools’ general annual grant (GAG) cash to pay for central services. However, growing numbers are opting to pool the money, a method that offers much less transparency, but allows them to distribute funding more evenly across their academies. Accounting expert Will Jordan, of IMP Software, said trusts are “currently having to navigate their thinking around this without any real direction” from government. “[Guidance] would give clarity to the sector… and help demystify this area that many leaders, both trust and school, are grappling with,” he said. …

Grieving parents who lost their son during birth demand nationwide guidance after hospital failings | UK News

“When Finn was born, I turned to Ruth and said, just wait. He’ll cry, he’ll cry… But he never did,” says Martin, wiping tears from his eyes. Warning: This article contains distressing content. His wife, Ruth, had just given birth to their first son. But after a traumatic delivery, Finn was born pale and limp, needing urgent resuscitation. Ruth was also injured, suffering a birthing tear so severe it required surgery. As the room at the London-based birthing centre flooded with doctors ready to whisk their son away, Martin asked his wife: “What do you want me to do? Stay with you, or go with Finn?” Follow Finn, she told him. As the plastic cot containing his newborn son was wheeled out of the room, a sense of helplessness swept over him. “There was nothing I could do for either of them,” he says, his voice breaking. While we talk, both Ruth and Martin break down in tears, taking turns to comfort each other, but when I ask if they want to take a break, …

GM Shifts Into Higher Gear As It Beats Quarterly Results, Raises 2024 Guidance

General Motors shares are higher in premarket trading after raising its 2024 guidance and beating Wall Street analysts’ top- and bottom-line expectations for the first quarter. The automaker cited stable pricing and increasing demand for its petrol-powered vehicles.  GM boosted its adjusted pretax profit forecast to $12.5 billion to $14.5 billion, or $9 to $10 a share, up from its previous range of $12 billion to $14 billion, or $8.50 and $9.50 a share, for the year on a more robust car market in North America offsetting losses in other regions. The automaker increased its 2024 forecast for adjusted automotive free cash flow to $8.5 billion and $10.5 billion, up from the previous estimate of $8 billion to $10 billion.  “Over the last 24 months, we have been growing at an annualized rate of 15%,” GM Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson told investors on an earnings call, noting, “That gave us the confidence to raise full-year guidance.”  Investors overlooked the company’s waning electric vehicles unit in China primarily because of its strong performance in the US. “There … is the reality that the pricing is staying stronger for …
