The Night When Miles Davis Opened for the Grateful Dead (1970)

The Night When Miles Davis Opened for the Grateful Dead (1970)

What’s that, you ask? Did Miles Davis open for the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West? In what world could such a thing happen? In the world of the late sixties/early seventies, when jazz fused with acid rock, acid rock with country, and pop culture took a long strange trip. The “inspired pairing” of the Dead with Davis’ electric band on April 9–12, 1970, “represented one of [promoter] Bill Graham’s most legendary bookings,” writes the blog Cryptical Developments. I’ll say. Davis had just released the groundbreaking double-LP Bitches Brew and was “at somewhat of an artistic and commercial crossroads,” experimenting with new, more fluid compositions. Aggressive and dominated by rock rhythms and electric instruments, the album became Davis’ best seller and brought him before young, white audiences in a way his earlier work had not.  The band that Davis brought into the Fillmore West, comprising [Chick] Corea, [Dave] Holland, soprano sax player Steve Grossman, drummer Jack Dejohnette, and percussionist Airto Moreira, was fully versed in this new music, and stood the Fillmore West audiences on …

What I Ate Growing Up With the Grateful Dead

What I Ate Growing Up With the Grateful Dead

I have been staring at this silver dish of fried chicken for what feels like hours but what really, actually, has been days. Twenty-three days, to be exact, over the course of the three-month Dead Forever run at the all-new, all-American pleasure palace—the Las Vegas Sphere. I grew up on the road. First on the family bus, traveling from city to city to watch my father, Mickey Hart, play drums with the Grateful Dead and Planet Drum, and then later with the various Grateful Dead offshoots. When I was old enough, I joined the crew, working for Dead & Company, doing whatever I could be trusted to handle: stringing strands of plastic Grateful Dead–bear lights; ferrying tie-dyed tapestries, extension cords, and gaffer tape by golf cart; helping VIP-ticket holders smuggle ziplocks filled with vegan sandwiches and granola into the venue. Then, late-night, drinking whiskey from the bottle with the techs, sitting in the emptying parking lot as the semitrucks and their load-out rumble marked the end of our day. Do refugees have a duty to be grateful?

Do refugees have a duty to be grateful?

Every year millions of people leave their home countries to seek safety elsewhere. Refugees escape persecution, subvert international borders and sometimes cross oceans to seek safety. They then face a gruelling asylum adjudication system which determines whether they will receive support. Once refugees have made these perilous journeys and are offered international protection, against all odds, some claim that they are then required to go even further: they must be grateful for it. On his popular Fox News show in 2019, American commentator Tucker Carlson criticised US congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a refugee from Somalia, on precisely these grounds. “If anyone should love America, it’s Ilhan Omar”, Carlson opined, the “country rescued her from a squalid Kenyan refugee camp and made her a national figure … But Ilhan Omar is not grateful. She hates us for it.” Albeit often in less strident terms, others have appealed to duties of gratitude to demand “good behaviour” from refugees. In 2006 a UNHCR representative warned a group of refugees in South Africa, “we understand the challenges you face, but …

Frock horror! In these dark times, let us be grateful for the ludicrous spectacle of the Met Gala | Marina Hyde

Frock horror! In these dark times, let us be grateful for the ludicrous spectacle of the Met Gala | Marina Hyde

Tuesday is officially the morning after the Met Gala of the night before, when we civilians get to press our noses up against the glass of our phone screens and pass unsparing judgment on dresses whose trains alone cost more than HS2. If you haven’t sat in mismatched pyjamas huffing toast while remarking what an unacceptable misstep Lana Del Rey’s mosquito net was, and how Chanel seems to be going tits up, then you have simply failed to capitalise on the digital banquet spread out for you. These are dark times, and nothing but … gratitude, I think? … should be shown for film director Taika Waititi’s decision to come dressed as a brown pleather three-piece suite, while his wife, Rita Ora, presented as the ribbon curtain tacked over their back door to keep the flies off it. Despite – and indeed because of – its best efforts not to be, the Met Gala often feels like a spectacle staged for the tricoteuses camping out round the bottom of the guillotine. This is an event …

Neve Campbell Is ‘Grateful’ Studio Listened to Pay Concerns

Neve Campbell shared that Spyglass Media Group increased her pay for Scream VII after she previously exited the franchise due to a salary dispute. Ahead of Scream VI, the actress said in 2022 that she would not be returning to the blockbuster slasher series because she “felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.” However, it was revealed in March that Campbell would reprise her character Sidney Prescott in the upcoming seventh installment. While the Wild Things actress is excited to return to her character she’s known for 30 years, she also recently told People magazine that she’s “really grateful that the studio heard me when I talked about pay discrepancy and when I talked about [Scream VI negotiations] not feeling respectful.” She added, “When they first approached me [for Scream VII ], I thought, ‘I don’t know what respectful looks like to them. We might be in very different places.’ But they started out in a strong place, so that was lovely.” Campbell noted that …

In an Instagram video published on Monday (29 April), Brand told his followers: “Yesterday I got baptized and it was an incredible, profound experience. Many of you will have had your own experiences of baptism and will therefore know what I’m talking about. “Many aspects of it were very intimate and personal.” Brand went on to compare the experience to his well-documented past drug use, saying: “The truth is this, as a person that has in the past taken many, many substances and always been disappointed with their inability to deliver the kind of …

This is what happened when I ran a “grateful mile” every day for three weeks

This is what happened when I ran a “grateful mile” every day for three weeks

I’ll never forget the time a friend invited me to a Buddhist meditation session. I was lured by the promise of tasty vegetarian food beforehand and thought it would be interesting to try something different. The food was great, but the meditation was not. We sat on uncomfortable chairs for 30 minutes, in a cold room, with our eyes closed. I was bored and didn’t see the point. A similar thing happened when I tried to learn how to meditate via an app out of curiosity. It asked me to imagine myself in certain scenarios and to repeat mantras to myself. But none of it was tangible. So when I heard about the Grateful Mile I was pleased to see the word gratitude replace mindfulness. To me, mindfulness is incredibly vague, but being grateful is something I can immediately relate to real-life experiences. The philosophy Run Grateful, founded by former drug addict Mark White, is a mindful movement collective that supports people to make positive changes in their lives. Their philosophy centers on moving forward …

New psychology research shows grateful people feel less boredom

New psychology research shows grateful people feel less boredom

A series of five studies recently tested whether gratitude could prevent boredom. The results supported these expectations, demonstrating that gratitude might effectively reduce and prevent boredom by enhancing the feeling that life is meaningful. The research was published in Motivation and Emotion. Boredom is defined as “the aversive experience of wanting but being unable to engage in satisfying activity.” It is a negative emotion associated with a perceived lack of stimulation, interest, or engagement in one’s environment or activities. Boredom often accompanies feelings of restlessness, dissatisfaction, and a desire for change or novelty. It can arise from repetitive tasks, a lack of challenge, or a mismatch between an individual’s interests and their current situation. Boredom is often intertwined with feelings of meaninglessness and is associated with various adverse psychological outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, or stress. Gratitude, which is the appreciation of what is valuable and meaningful in life, can potentially mitigate feelings of boredom by shifting focus from what is lacking to what is present and positive. Similarly, boredom is inversely related to the …
