US Cattle Slaughter Plunges 16% In One Week As Immigration Crackdown Guts Kansas “Golden Triangle” Workforce

Published by Jenni Sidey

A heightened wave of federal immigration enforcement in southwest Kansas has sent a shockwave through the U.S. beef supply chain, causing severe processing plant slowdowns, stranding thousands of cattle at feedlots, and threatening to drive up consumer meat prices. U.S. cattle slaughter plummeted 16% in one week to an estimated 90,000 head on Thursday, September 24, as fear of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity led to widespread workforce absenteeism. By Friday, slaughter numbers remained 14% below the previous week’s levels, translating into millions of dollars in lost revenue for producers whose animals are suddenly backed up. The disruptions are centered in the Kansas “Golden Triangle” of commercial beef packing, which encompasses Dodge City, Liberal, and Garden City. This rural region is home to massive facilities operated by Cargill, Tyson Foods, and National Beef. Collectively, these plants process roughly 24,000 head of cattle per day, representing more than 20% of daily U.S. fed-cattle slaughter capacity. Agricultural groups, including the Kansas Livestock Association, Texas Cattle Feeders Association, and Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, warned that the unannounced enforcement …

Julianne Moore Accepts Zurich’s Golden Icon Award — in German

Published by Daniella Wilson

What can’t Julianne Moore do? The U.S. actress accepted Zurich Film Festival‘s lifetime achievement honor, the Golden Icon Award, in perfect German on Friday night. She was joined at the ceremony by Jesse Eisenberg, who directs her in his latest feature The Debut, a musical-comedy co-starring Paul Giamatti, which is screening at the 22nd edition in Switzerland this week. Moore called upon her own childhood growing up in Europe while making her acceptance speech. “Thank you for this wonderful honor,” said a translated version of her words. “I know that I am in Switzerland right now, but as a teenager, I lived in Germany. And my teacher there told me that I could become an actress. Had I not moved to Europe with my parents, I would not have had this wonderful life. And I wouldn’t be here with you tonight to speak my bad German to you.” On the carpet ahead of the presentation, the Oscar-winning actress beamed and said she was feeling “pretty good” about the prospect of receiving the prestigious Golden Icon. …

What’s Gone in macOS Golden Gate and What’s Next in macOS 28

Published by Miika Tikkanen

With macOS Golden Gate, Apple phased out several legacy features and services, cutting support for older devices and accessories. More cuts are coming in macOS 28 as Apple continues to root out lingering Intel features. Here’s everything that’s been dropped. Support for Intel Macs – ‌macOS Golden Gate‌ is the first version of macOS that runs only on Apple silicon Macs. Intel Macs can’t run it and are limited to macOS Tahoe. Apple still plans to offer security updates through fall 2028. Boot Camp Assistant – Since ‌macOS Golden Gate‌ doesn’t run on Intel Macs, it doesn’t support Boot Camp. Apple silicon Macs require virtualization software like Parallels or VMware Fusion to run Windows. Rosetta 2 (Temporarily) – Upgrading to ‌macOS Golden Gate‌ removes Rosetta, but if you have an app installed that requires it, you can reinstall it. ‌macOS Golden Gate‌ is the last version of macOS that will have full Rosetta support. Apple Filing Protocol – Apple deprecated AFP back in macOS Sequoia 15.5, and there is no AFP client at all in …

Apple released macOS Golden Gate to the public today, which means anyone with a compatible Mac can download it. The new version of macOS requires an Apple chip, so if you have a Mac with an M1 or later or a MacBook Neo, you can upgrade. ‌macOS Golden Gate‌ includes Siri AI, and the Mac is the only device that people in the EU can try ‌Siri‌ AI with. It also brings a long list of performance improvements, updates to Liquid Glass, and new Apple Intelligence features for apps like Photos, Calendar, Reminders, Home, and Safari. Liquid Glass Apple added a Liquid Glass slider in macOS 27, which means you can adjust the transparency level. You can select a clearer version of Liquid Glass that lets some of the background show through, or a more opaque version for improved legibility. Since it’s a slider, you can also pick something in between. Apple tweaked the overall opacity of Liquid Glass, and it better diffuses complex content behind navigation bars and buttons. The pet I’ll never forget: Polly, the golden retriever who saved my husband’s life

Published by Sam Flores

My husband, Adam, and I had always planned to have a big family and that journey began when we got our dog, Polly, five years ago. I’ve loved golden retrievers since I was a child because I grew up with one. We got Polly as a puppy and she was everything we’d hoped for: loving and smart. She immediately connected with both of us, but became inseparable from Adam. They would go for morning runs together; Polly could always be found wagging her tail by his side. This bond proved to be lifesaving. It was a normal Monday night in March 2024 at our home in County Fermanagh. Adam and I had put our one-year-old son, Alfie, to sleep, Polly was resting in her bed in the utility room directly below our bedroom, and we went up to sleep. At around half past one, I was woken up by the sound of Polly barking. I was startled and confused – it was unusual for her to bark so loudly in the middle of the night. …

Golden Boy of British teen-pop music Craig Douglas dies aged 85

Craig Douglas, the 1960s chart favourite best known for Only Sixteen, has died at 85. The British singer – who briefly outsold Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley when Only Sixteen became a runaway UK smash in 1959 – passed away following a short illness, his representative confirmed to the Isle of Wight County Press. Douglas dominated the charts in the late 1950s and early 1960s and became a regular fixture on television variety shows. Born Terry Perkins on the Isle of Wight, Douglas was working as a milkman when he won the TV talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1959. That victory launched him into the national spotlight and led to a recording contract that would make him one of the most recognisable young performers of the era. His gentle voice and clean‑cut image earned him the nickname “the Golden Boy,” and he quickly became a favourite among teenage audiences. Douglas scored his biggest hit in 1959 with Only Sixteen, a cover of the Sam Cooke song that spent four weeks at No.1 and became one …

Joe Lycett Broke Golden Celebrity Traitors Rule Before Season 2 Began

Published by Sam Flores

We’re mere weeks away from the highly-anticipated return of The Celebrity Traitors, and one loose-lipped contestant is already giving away secrets. Comedian Joe Lycett has admitted he broke one of the golden rules of the BBC reality show and told “everyone” he was appearing on the second season. “We weren’t meant to ask people if they were doing it,” he shared during an appearance on Hits Radio. “You sign the NDA and they say don’t tell anyone you’re doing it. But if you search the word ‘traitors’ in my WhatsApp, I told everyone!” “I was telling Uber drivers, I was telling everyone,” he quipped. Before heading to the castle, Joe also spent a lot of energy trying to work out if anyone else from his inner circle was taking part in the celebrity version of the popular series. He recalled: “I asked Joanne McNally, who is one of my favourite people in the world, and she said ‘I’m in as well’. So, the comics sort of worked out who was in because we all talk …
