News publishers appear torn between litigating or negotiating when it comes to AI companies using their content to train large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT. Press Gazette analysis has found that more than four in ten of the 100 biggest English-language news websites have decided not to block AI bots from the likes of OpenAI and Google. OpenAI is reportedly offering news organisations between $1m and $5m per year to license their copyrighted content to train its models. Meanwhile Apple has reportedly been exploring AI deals with the likes of Conde Nast, NBC News and People and Daily Beast owner IAC to license their content archives, but nothing has yet been made public. (Getty) The prime minister has been urged to help thousands of motorists who were given speeding tickets due to a fake sign on a busy road. Drivers received automatic fines and penalty points for violating the speed limit on the A20 near Sidcup in south-east London after an “unauthorised third party” installed a 50mph sign on 24 January. Transport for London (TfL) had temporarily reduced the speed limit from 70mph to 40mph due to frequent flooding. Although the Metropolitan Police acknowledged the sign should not have been there, they claimed it “would not have impacted the enforcement of the 40mph average speed limit.” In January, Tory MP Louie French and 11 other MPs, wrote a letter to London Mayor Sadiq Khan, asking him to cancel the fines just before the police denied the request to waive the penalties for approximately 600 drivers. While long-range forecasts are harder to predict, there are “hints” of the shift to colder weather over the next two weeks, according to Channel 4 weather presenter Liam Dutton. It comes as temperatures in the UK grew milder this week following an ice cold Arctic blast that led to days of sub-zero conditions. The Pothole Pro JCB will be rolled out in Harrow, north-west London. (JCB) As potholes hit a five-year high, some councils are pinning their hopes on a £165,000 machine that claims to fix the road hazard in eight minutes. Harrow Council in north-west London is rolling out the Pothole Pro JCB as part of a new initiative to transform roads. The authority said a new “pothole squad” would also be assembled to help find and fix the craters. The team will be armed with the “revolutionary” machine “specifically designed to sort out any pothole repair or large reinstatement operations”. Its manufacturer claims a typical pothole can be dealt with in just eight minutes.
