Merz unveils new aid for Ukraine as Russia strikes Kyiv during German leader’s visit

Ukraine and Germany have signed a €1.3-billion deal to help fight the surge in Russian drone attacks, while renewed strikes and air raid sirens greeted Chancellor Friedrich Merz on a solidarity visit Sunday. The agreement worth more than 1.3 billion euros includes some 1 billion euros for weapons including combat drones, while 350 billion euros goes towards supporting Ukraine’s battered energy sector, which Russia is targeting to cut off heating and power during the freezing winter months. As the two met, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Washington had proposed fresh talks with both Ukraine and Russia by the end of the month. Merz, on a surprise visit to show European support as attacks increase, discovered the new reality of daily life in the Ukrainian capital. Ride1Up just launched a 28 MPH German mid-drive e-bike for an insanely low ,295

Ride1Up just launched a 28 MPH German mid-drive e-bike for an insanely low $1,295

There are cheap e-bikes, and there are good mid-drive e-bikes. Those two circles on the Venn diagram don’t overlap nearly as often as we’d like. But Ride1Up’s newly launched Prodigy V2 Eco is doing its best to smash them together with a surprisingly low $1,295 price tag. And this isn’t a $1,300 bike with some no-name mid-drive motor you’ve never heard of. At the heart of the Prodigy V2 Eco is a German-made Brose TF Sprinter mid-drive motor pumping out 90 Nm of torque, paired with a 504 Wh battery using Samsung cells. In other words, the expensive bits are still there. The Prodigy line has been around for several years now, and Ride1Up has historically used it as the company’s more premium mid-drive offering. The new Eco version appears to take that same basic formula and ask a fairly simple question: How much can we shave off the price without cutting into the parts that actually make the bike so good? German space company HyImpulse granted licence to launch rockets from UK | UK News

A German rocket firm has been granted a launch licence by UK regulators – and it plans to blast off from the Shetland Islands early next year. HyImpulse, which builds commercial rockets, received the launch operator licence on Thursday from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The company was granted the right to launch after it passed a regulatory review process. HyImpulse is aiming to launch its SR75 suborbital vehicle in spring 2027. Image: Pic: HyImpulse The rocket will be used for a number of research projects, with its design set to help it take off in a wider array of environmental conditions. It is not intended to launch satellites, but other firms plan to use SaxaVord Spaceport on Unst for commercial space launches. HyImpulse also hopes to launch an orbital rocket called SL1 from SaxaVord in the future. Image: The SR75 suborbital rocket. Julianne Moore Accepts Zurich’s Golden Icon Award — in German

What can’t Julianne Moore do? The U.S. actress accepted Zurich Film Festival‘s lifetime achievement honor, the Golden Icon Award, in perfect German on Friday night. She was joined at the ceremony by Jesse Eisenberg, who directs her in his latest feature The Debut, a musical-comedy co-starring Paul Giamatti, which is screening at the 22nd edition in Switzerland this week. Moore called upon her own childhood growing up in Europe while making her acceptance speech. “Thank you for this wonderful honor,” said a translated version of her words. “I know that I am in Switzerland right now, but as a teenager, I lived in Germany. And my teacher there told me that I could become an actress. Had I not moved to Europe with my parents, I would not have had this wonderful life. And I wouldn’t be here with you tonight to speak my bad German to you.” On the carpet ahead of the presentation, the Oscar-winning actress beamed and said she was feeling “pretty good” about the prospect of receiving the prestigious Golden Icon. …

Anti-Immigration AfD Now The Most Popular Party In Key Western German State In A National Vote

Via Remix News, The anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is known for its strength in the east of the country, but its popularity in Western Germany is also only growing, including in the country’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia. This latest Forsa poll points to incredible growth of the AfD in a very short time in the voter-rich Western German state. It is now the most popular party in the entire state when measuring a national vote and would earn 24 percent of the vote. Meet the German Shepherd That Got Top Billing Over Brad Pitt

Meet the German Shepherd That Got Top Billing Over Brad Pitt

Andrew Simpson had a simple but crucial question before production began on Heart of the Beast: Would Brad Pitt let a German Shepherd lick his face? The longtime Hollywood animal coordinator (Game of Thrones, The Revenant, John Wick: Chapter 3) had spent weeks scouring New Zealand for the movie’s canine star, making dozens of cold calls and house visits to breeders and rescues. Eventually, he discovered Heisenberg Kennels, where a six-year-old retired search-and-rescue stud named Uber was waiting for him. After locking eyes with his furry friend, Simpson knew he’d found his lead actor. “He just had that maturity about him,” Simpson says. “He had a softness about him, too.” Still, not every A-list co-star is keen on getting quite that close to their four-legged scene partner. For Simpson, the relationship between an actor and an animal can make or break a movie, particularly if they’re fabricating a lifelong bond. “There’s nothing worse than dealing with an actor who doesn’t want to get down in the mud with you,” Simpson says. “That’s what makes the …

Amateur Archaeologist Finds 934 Roman Silver Coins in German Field

A trove of 934 Roman silver denarii was discovered by an amateur archaeologist with a metal detector in a field in Wesseling, Germany. The coins date to the time of the Roman emperor Hadrian. When his metal detector wouldn’t stop beeping last year, Oliver Riedl called authorities and a group of experts began digging immediately to discover the biggest collection of coins from this time period in the country, per the local archaeology office. The 6.8 pounds of silver was likely buried deliberately in the second half of the second century CE, according to the LVR Office for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments in the Rhineland. Related Articles “Of course, we can only speculate about the motives, but it’s very likely that someone wanted to keep this money safe. After all, banks didn’t exist back then,” Erich Classen, a state archaeologist and the director of the office, told ABC News. Though it’s still unclear why the treasure had never been recovered, Classen added, “perhaps the owner died before that could happen, without being able to …

German State Election Losses Risk Snarling Merz’s Reform Agenda

German State Election Losses Risk Snarling Merz’s Reform Agenda

BERLIN, Sept 23 (Reuters) – Chancellor Friedrich Merz may have survived the triumph of the far right in this month’s state elections in eastern Germany and Berlin but the shock to his coalition could force him to water down his promised reform agenda. Merz took the unusual step of announcing immediately after exit polls showed his conservatives were on course for their worst-ever defeat that he would stay in office to get a raft of reforms to the tax, pensions and health systems through parliament. His partners in the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), who also lost heavily ‌in elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Berlin while holding on ‌in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, also pledged to continue their alliance with his Christian Democrats (CDU). But there has been increasing pressure from within the coalition for the government to do something to reflect the votes. “There can’t be a simple carrying on as normal after the state elections,” an SPD strategy document circulated this week said, calling for a “German ‘New Deal’ that doesn’t leave people alone in a period of transition”. It …
