Peer Inside the Mind of Google’s AI With This New Experimental Gemini Model

In these early days of artificial intelligence, you might find yourself staring at an answer, wondering: how on Earth did the model get to that? With Google’s newest experimental model, you can pull back the curtain on how AI thinks, as it’s designed to show you its thoughts. See an AI Model’s Reasoning With Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Building on its speedy Gemini 2.0 Flash experimental model, Google has just dropped Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, a version that not only offers fast solutions to complex questions, but also presents its reasoning in getting to that solution. According to Google DeepMind’s Jeff Dean, the new experimental model was “trained to use thoughts to strengthen its reasoning.” While Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental is available directly on the standard Gemini desktop app, Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental is only available on Google’s AI Studio. That being said, it’s easy (and free) to get started on this platform. At the time of writing, you can present the model with up to 1500 requests per day without paying a dime. …

Google Gemini app may be coming to iPhone soon — here’s what we know

Google Gemini app may be coming to iPhone soon — here’s what we know

Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot and ChatGPT rival, could soon be breaking out on its own for iPhone users; some eagle-eyed Philippines-based individuals spotted the standalone app in the Apple App Store. SEE ALSO: Google Maps is using Gemini to help you make plans iPhone owners can access Gemini via the Google app, but a dedicated, standalone app would streamline things significantly, giving iOS users a faster, more direct connection to Google’s advanced AI — without the extra steps. Mashable Light Speed One of the standout features of the Gemini iOS app that was shared online is Gemini Live — a voice chat option that mirrors the real-time conversation capabilities seen in OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Unlike the Google app’s Gemini tab, which lacks this functionality, Gemini Live appears to be the primary attraction of the standalone app. This move would align with Google’s broader push to make Gemini a more central, standalone product in its AI ecosystem, like Microsoft’s approach with Copilot. Google hasn’t commented on the app sightings yet, but if they’re in a testing phase, …

How to try Google’s new Gemini Live AI assistant for free

Kerry Wan/ZDNET The current generation of mobile voice assistants — with our simple requests often requiring multiple attempts to be understood — surely leaves room for improvement. If you’re ready for an upgraded experience, voice assistants supported by generative AI may be the solution, and there are some you can try today.  On Tuesday at Made by Google, Google finally released Gemini Live, its advanced mobile conversational experience that enables users to have free-flowing conversations with an AI assistant, or — as Google describes it — “a sidekick in your pocket.”  Also: Google’s new Pixel Screenshots may be the feature that finally converts me to use AI The Live experience is supposed to mimic a conversation with a human. As a result, it can be interrupted, carry on multi-turn conversations, and even resume a prior conversation.  Users also can continue talking to it in the background or while their phone is locked, much as an ordinary phone call with a friend or relative. There are 10 voices users can pick from, all resembling human voices with different …

Free Gemini users can finally chat in a flash

Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More Google made several updates to the free version of its Gemini chatbot, including making its low-latency multimodal model Gemini 1.5 Flash available and adding more source links to reduce hallucinations.   Gemini 1.5 Flash, previously only available to developers, is best suited for tasks requiring quick responses, such as answering customer queries. Google announced the model during its annual developer conference, Google I/O, in May but has since opened it up to the public.  The model has a large context window, referring to how much information or words it processes at a time, of around 1 million tokens. Google said Gemini 1.5 Flash on the Gemini chatbot will have a context window of 32K tokens. A large context window allows for more complex questions and longer back-and-forth conversations.  To take advantage of this, Google is updating the free version of Gemini to handle file uploads from Google Drive or devices. I Tried Gemini AI to Plan Mother’s Day Last-Minute. It Took a Weird Turn

I Tried Gemini AI to Plan Mother’s Day Last-Minute. It Took a Weird Turn

Part of the allure around using artificial intelligence is the near-irresistible prospect of getting whatever you’re trying to do right in record time. For instance: Are you so unprepared for Mother’s Day that you just now Googled “Mother’s Day 2024” and found this article? Consider letting AI take the pressure off you to personalize an impossible-to-forget day for the mom who matters most to you.  The woman I call mom happens to be all the way across the country from me in a small town called Battle Creek, Michigan — also known as the birthplace of Corn Flakes. It’s a lovely little spot that’s home to the original Kellogg’s factory and, according to local lore, the air sometimes smells of powdered sugar after a heavy rain.  That’s about all this California native knows about Battle Creek, and I know even less about what would make for a special Mother’s Day in the area.  Enter AI, wielding comprehensive knowledge of both everything to do in this tiny town in Michigan and (hopefully) informed knowledge of what …

I tested Gemini as my Pixel assistant again, and it’s gotten better – but there’s a catch

I tested Gemini as my Pixel assistant again, and it’s gotten better – but there’s a catch

Kerry Wan/ZDNET I’ve been using Android since its first iteration, and I remember those early releases felt like they weren’t quite ready for the masses. They were clunky, poorly designed, bereft of certain features, and prone to stalling or freezing. Eventually, Android found its footing and has become one of the most flexible, user-friendly mobile OSes on the market. That doesn’t mean Google hasn’t made a misstep here and there. Also: Google Pixel 8a hands-on: 3 features make this my favorite $499 phone today Such is the case with the migration from Google Assistant to Gemini. When I first tested Gemini, I concluded that Google rolled it out too soon — many important features simply weren’t available. For example, during the first few weeks of testing, Gemini couldn’t create a calendar appointment. Google has since added the feature. In fact, Gemini now supports the following: Create/modify alarms and timers. Make phone calls. Send messages and read incoming messages. Control various features on your device (such as the flashlight, Bluetooth, or open specific apps). Control smart …
