Raging wildfires in central Greece leave two people dead | Climate Crisis News

Two people have died in a rugged mountainous area in central Greece while trying to help firefighters tackle a forest fire that has forced several villages to be evacuated, authorities have said. The fire near Corinth, 140 kilometres (87 miles) west of Athens, was still burning on Monday, fanned by fierce winds. Greek police spokeswoman Constantina Dimoglidou said the recovered bodies were severely burnt and that laboratory tests were necessary for their identification. The fire brigade has launched an investigation, the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection said. Smoke from the fire, which burned several homes and a church, hovered over the capital throughout Monday. Greece, like other southern European countries, is plagued by destructive wildfires in the summer that have been exacerbated by global warming. The country this year has experienced its hottest-ever summer after its warmest winter on record, which left large areas with scant or no rain. Over the past few months, authorities have had to cope with more than 4,500 wildfires in countryside left parched by a protracted drought and early summer …

Perrotin Gallery Donates 23 Works to Pompidou Centre in Paris

Perrotin Gallery Donates 23 Works to Pompidou Centre in Paris

Emmanuel Perrotin, the French art dealer with galleries in Paris, Hong Kong, New York, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and LA, is donating 23 artworks to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Xavier Rey, the modern and contemporary art museum’s director, and several of its curators selected the works. They are by a total of 17 artists on Perrotin gallery’s books, including Takashi Murakami, Emma Webster, Jean-Marie Appriou, Genesis Belanger, Bharti Kher, and Klara Kristalova. The Pompidou said in a statement that the works offer “a wide panorama of contemporary art from the past 20 years.” According to Le Monde, the artists have given up their share of the sale – and the gallery owner his commission – to see their works enrich the Pompidou’s collection. The value of the donation exceeds the museum’s annual acquisition budget of almost $2 million, which is particularly low for a museum of the Pompidou’s status. As a result, it tends to grow its collection through donations. “The selection includes artists who were already present in the museum’s collection; artists whose work has been …

Israel attacks UN-run school in central Gaza, killing at least 40 | Israel-Palestine conflict News

An Israeli air attack on a UN-run school sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza’s Nuseirat camp killed at least 40 people, mainly women and children, according to local government officials. The raid on Thursday came after the military announced a new ground and air assault in several refugee camps in central Gaza. The Palestinian news agency Wafa said thousands of displaced Palestinians were sheltering at al-Sardi school, which is linked to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), when it came under attack. Palestinian group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, condemned the predawn attack as a “horrible massacre”.   Source link

Thousands march in Sweden’s Malmo against Israel’s Eurovision participation | Israel War on Gaza News

Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched in the Swedish port city of Malmo against Israel’s participation in the pan-continental Eurovision Song Contest. Protesters waving Palestinian flags packed the historic Stortorget square near Malmo’s 16th-century town hall before a planned march on Thursday through the city for a rally in a park several kilometres from the Eurovision venue. Police estimated that between 10,000 and 12,000 people took part. Among those in the crowd was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. Chanting “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “Israel is a terror state”, the demonstrators set off smoke flares in the Palestinian flag colours during a noisy but peaceful rally to criticise Israel and call for a ceasefire in Gaza. There was a large police presence, with a hovering helicopter, and officers on rooftops with binoculars. A smaller pro-Israel protest was also held on Thursday in a central Malmo square. Contest organisers, who try to keep Eurovision a nonpolitical event, have rejected calls to bar Israel over the war on Gaza. But they told …

The sanctuaries trying to save birds of prey from extinction in Kenya | Wildlife

Simon Thomsett tentatively removes a pink bandage from the wing of an injured bateleur, a short-tailed eagle from the African savannah, where birds of prey are increasingly at risk of extinction. “There is still a long way to go before healing,” Thomsett explains as he lifts up the bird’s dark feathers and examines the injury. “It was injured in the Maasai Mara national park, but we don’t know how,” says the 62-year-old vet who runs the Soysambu Raptor Centre in central Kenya. The 18-month-old eagle, with a distinctive red beak and black body, was brought to the shelter five months ago, where about 30 other injured raptors keep it company. The sanctuary in the Soysambu reserve is one of the few places where the birds of prey are safe. A study published in January by The Peregrine Fund, a United States-based non-profit organisation, found that the raptor population has fallen by 90 percent on the continent over the last 40 years. “You can go down a road today for maybe 200km [125 miles] and not see …

Insight! Sensitivity! Genius! Our critic picks the top five masterpieces in the National Gallery | Art

Insight! Sensitivity! Genius! Our critic picks the top five masterpieces in the National Gallery | Art

The National Gallery in London is 200 years old on Friday, but what makes it so special? Founded in 1824 when public museums of fine art were in their infancy, it was different from rivals such as the Louvre (founded 1793) and the Prado (1819) because they inherited royal collections. By contrast, the National started from scratch and has intentionally built up the world’s most systematic corpus of European paintings. In that same thoughtful spirit, the gallery and the Guardian have charted a timeline of 20 of its masterpieces. Here are five of those to take you on a trip through 600 years of insight, sensitivity and genius. Photograph: The National Gallery, London A young woman sits on a cushion on the floor, her back against a chest, head in a book. Every detail is so matter-of-fact, from the silk and fur of her clothes to the way her lidded eyes focus exclusively on the illuminated manuscript. She could be studying in a cafe, eyes narrowed against the blaring modern world. But this was painted …

Belgian and Dutch students protest against Israel’s war on Gaza | Israel War on Gaza News

Students in Belgium and the Netherlands have joined the wave of protests around the world against Israel’s war on Gaza. The protesters occupied parts of the universities of Ghent and Amsterdam on Monday, joining international student demonstrations that started on US campuses. At the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in the centre of the city, hundreds of students set up a camp, pitching tents, playing in drum circles, and barricading access with wooden pallets. The students want UvA and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) to end their partnerships with Israeli institutions. A UvA spokesperson said that while it condoned the protest during the day, it will not tolerate students staying the night. “If students decide to spend the night, we will report it to the police”, he said. In neighbouring Belgium, some 100 students occupied part of Ghent University (UGent). Footage shared on social media shows students surrounded by tents chanting “Hey hey, ho ho, the occupation has to go” in one university building. Several UGent employees and professors have signed an open letter supporting the protest …
