Heathrow Airport closed for at least 24 hours after substation fire | UK | News

Heathrow Aiport has announced it has closed for at least 24 hours due to a nearby electricity substation fire. It comes as a crushing blow to holidaymakers hoping to jet away for the weekend. Passengers have been warned not to arrive for scheduled flights as the airport continues to experience “a significant power outage” following the fire at North Hyde Electricity Substation in nearby Hayes, west London. Thousands of homes have been left without power and more than 100 people were evacuated after a transformer within the North Hyde electrical substation caught fire at around 11.15pm on Thursday. A 200-metre cordon has been put in place as a precaution. Pat Goulbourne, assistant commissioner with London Fire Brigade, said: “This is a highly visible and significant incident, and our firefighters are working tirelessly in challenging conditions to bring the fire under control as swiftly as possible. The fire has caused a power outage affecting a large number of homes and local businesses, and we are working closely with our partners to minimise disruption.” In a statement …

The 1 Part Of Your Outfit Flight Attendants Always Judge

We’ve written before at HuffPost UK about why you shouldn’t really tie a ribbon onto your suitcase. And yep, we’ve also shared that flight attendants don’t just greet you onto a plane to be nice ― they’re also giving you a quick up-and-down. Well, it turns out that footwear is a big part of that scan. Speaking to Reader’s Digest, Amy Caris, a flight attendant and director of in-flight for JSX, said, “I always look at what kind of shoes a customer is wearing.” Why? As with the onboarding greeting, it has to do with safety. Caris revealed that she peeps people’s footwear “to determine whether they can run quickly and easily in them.” “If I see someone wearing high heels during boarding, I can make a note to add in an emergency command about removing them if the need arises,” she added. CN Traveller’s editors seem to agree, writing “heels can cause damage to the evacuation slide.” Instead, they recommend ballet flats if you want something a little prettier ― and while they like …

Row breaks out over 100ml U-turn as passengers told to arrive an hour early for flights

Row breaks out over 100ml U-turn as passengers told to arrive an hour early for flights

Airport passengers have been told arrive three hours early to clear security queues amid a row over the Government’s U-turn on 100ml limits for liquids in hand luggage. EasyJet is advising its passengers to turn up an extra hour early for flights from Birmingham Airport after growing security queues left passengers lining up outside the building. Travellers should arrive an hour earlier than if they were flying from another British airport, the airline said. The advice comes as the Airport Operators’ Association (AOA) hit out at the Government for its surprise U-turn, in a highly unusual move for the travel industry, which normally shies away from being seen to criticise officials. Rules were expected to change at the start of June, letting passengers carry bottles of up to two litres, but last Friday the Government announced that the 100ml limit would remain in force, saying that new security scanners were not ready. Countries across Europe have successfully eased the 100ml rule, with several using scanners made by the same firms approved by the Department for …

Starmer would halt Rwanda flights immediately under Labour government | Politics News

No deportation flights to Rwanda will take off under a Labour government, Sir Keir Starmer has told Sky News. The Labour leader told Sky News political editor Beth Rigby “there’ll be no flights” as he wants to “scrap the scheme”, which aims to send asylum seekers entering the UK illegally from a safe country, such as France, to Rwanda. Earlier in the day Sir Keir confirmed Labour wanted to get rid of the Conservatives’ flagship scheme to reduce illegal immigration but a party spokesman said they would not stop flights already planned. I want to scrap the scheme so that means the flights won’t be going. “There will be no flights scheduled or taking off after the general election if Labour wins that general election. “No flights, no Rwanda scheme, it’s a gimmick, it’s very expensive, it won’t work.” Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player 0:30 Migrants arrive in Dover Sir Keir earlier announced …

Scoot cancels some flights in May as supply chain woes bite

Scoot cancels some flights in May as supply chain woes bite

Speaking at the Singapore Airshow in February, Airbus Asia-Pacific’s president Anand Stanley told CNA about the backlog orders and that Asia-Pacific region is the fastest growing market, and also the largest market, in aviation. “We are talking about 19,000 to 20,000 aircraft over the next 20 years, so it is (an) unstoppable demand to be honest,” he said. The demand for aircraft has been going up post-pandemic, said Mr Stanley. “We are looking at 19,000 new aircraft that are required, which shows that air travel is back,” he said. “Last year, we had a record year in terms of our backlog and orders. We have 8,300 aircraft in the backlog right now.” Mr Stanley also acknowledged that while Airbus was “in a ramp-up to meet demand”, supply chain had yet to catch up, so this was an area the company would have to work closely with suppliers to “resolve and more importanly, meet the needs of airline customers and consumers”. The loss of skilled manpower during the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced supply sources by the …

India airline cancels dozens of flights after crew call in sick | Aviation News

Staff take sick leave en masse in apparent protest against working conditions imposed by new owner Tata Group. Air India’s budget carrier, Air India Express, has been forced to cancel dozens of flights after many of its cabin crew members called in sick at the last minute. The carrier announced 85 cancellations on Thursday, with local media linking the mass sick leave to staff discontent over new hiring and promotion policies introduced after the ailing national airline was privatised in 2021, selling it to Indian conglomerate Tata Group. The disruptions started on Tuesday, with Air India Express reporting that more than 90 flights had been affected, but declining to specify whether they had been delayed or cancelled. The airport in the capital, New Delhi, saw chaotic scenes on Wednesday as agitated passengers waited for updates on their flights. #ImportantUpdate We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by unprecedented flight delays and cancellations.
