A starquake 10 billion years ago may have just sent a flash to Earth

A split-second flash of radio waves traveled through space for more than 10 billion years to reach Earth, making it the farthest fast radio burst anyone has detected and confirmed. Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, last only a few thousandths of a second but release enormous amounts of energy. Scientists spotted the first one in 2007, and they still don’t know what causes them. Most flash only once, which makes them extremely hard to chase. South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope caught this one, dubbed FRB 20240304B, on March 4, 2024. After failing to find its origin with the world’s largest ground-based telescopes, the team, led by Manisha Caleb and Themiya Nanayakkara of the University of Sydney in Australia, turned to NASA‘s James Webb Space Telescope. Finally, it came into focus: a faint galaxy from when the universe was only about 3 billion years old — more than double the distance of the prior record.  Until now, astronomers mostly managed to find and measure the sources of bursts much closer to home. This one shows researchers …

From 10-97% SOC in 9 minutes: Sunwoda joins the flash charging race

Published by skeptic

Chinese battery brand Sunwoda has just revealed a new EV battery charging system that can add 100 km (~62 miles) of range to an EV every minute, and can take a battery from from 10-97% SOC in less than 10 minutes. At room temperature. As armed conflicts continue to send global fuel prices skyward, EVs are getting to the point where they’re capable “filling up” on electric fuel in about the same (or less) than it takes to top up on gas or diesel – if you can even find any! Data Sunwoda presented its new 15C battery tech at a battery industry conference in Zaozhuang, Shandong and last week, along with claims that it could charge from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes adding about 60 miles of range for each minute it’s plugged in. The real breakthrough, though, wasn’t just about speed – it was about thermal management. And those incredible charging speeds were achieved at room temperature. That’s because the biggest issue in charging has always …
