MAGA Figures Turn on Elon Musk, Accuse Him of Censoring Their Tweets

MAGA Figures Turn on Elon Musk, Accuse Him of Censoring Their Tweets

We may be seeing some of the first major fissures forming in the dalliance between Donald Trump and his billionaire backer Elon Musk. Over the holiday week, Musk entered into a heated online conflict with notable pro-Trump figure and culture warrior Laura Loomer over the president-elect’s immigration policy, the Washington Post reports. The debacle saw Musk receive rare pushback from his far-right supporters for advocating laxer immigration policy to court skilled foreign workers, and culminated with Loomer, who has over 1.4 million followers on X, claiming that her account was being silenced by the platform’s billionaire owner for espousing her nationalist views. The infighting could augur a growing rift between the tech figures who have come to support Trump and the extreme right wing of his base. “It’s a sign of future conflicts,” Samuel Hammond, a senior economist at the Foundation for American Innovation, told WaPo. “This is like the pregame.” At issue is Trump’s decision to name Sriram Krishan, an Indian-born tech entrepreneur, as his senior policy advisor on AI. Loomer is not a …

When discussing their mental health, some of the top concerns that were raised were anxiety, stress, low mood, depression and loneliness. A 14-year-old boy who contacted Childline said: “For the last few weeks, I’ve felt my mental state getting worse. It’s ok at school but as soon as I’m alone in my room the thoughts start; I’m unwanted, I’m not normal, there’s no point doing anything. “I feel so trapped by these thoughts.” It is important for children and young people get help with their mental health at an early stage – through schools or in the local community – rather than waiting until they reach crisis point. Childline is calling on the government to roll out Mental Health Support Teams in every school, as well as supporting the foundations of good mental health by investing …

The Big Map of Who Lived When Shows Which Cultural Figures Walked the Earth at the Same Time: From 1200 to Present

The Big Map of Who Lived When Shows Which Cultural Figures Walked the Earth at the Same Time: From 1200 to Present

We could call the time in which we live the “Information Age.” Or we could describe it more vividly as the era of Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart, Beyoncé and Bob Dylan. Whatever you think of the work of any of these figures in particular, you can hardly deny the impact they’ve had on our culture. Were we living a century ago, we might have said the same of Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller, James Joyce and F. Scott Fitzgerald (though he hadn’t quite published The Great Gatsby yet), Pablo Picasso and Charlie Chaplin, Marie Curie and Sigmund Freud. Were we living in the year 1225, our lives would’ve overlapped with those of Leonardo Fibonacci, Francis of Assisi, Rumi, and Thomas Aquinas, as well as both Genghis Khan and his grandson Kublai Khan. All this is laid out visually in The Big Map of Who Lived When, created earlier this year by a Reddit user called Profound_Whatever. As Big Think’s Frank Jacobs writes, the map …

Harris confirmed as nominee, UK migrant figures out

Vice President Kamala Harris is seen announcing the formation of the Economic Opportunity Coalition to invest in underserved communities at Restoration Plaza, New York City. Picture: Lev Radin/Shutterstock A look ahead at the key events leading the news agenda next week, from the team at Foresight News. Leading the week  With immigration back at the forefront of the political agenda following riots in recent weeks, the Home Office’s latest quarterly figures on immigration and irregular migration drop on Thursday (August 22), giving politicians of all stripes a chance to talk about the underlying causes of this month’s disorder. The Conservatives will use high numbers to jump on the government’s decisions to close asylum seeker camps and abandon the controversial Rwanda scheme – especially in the wake of news over 700 migrants arrived by small boat last weekend – while Labour will point to the rise in immigration throughout the Tories’ 14-year tenure and their failure to reduce numbers while they were in power.  Waiting in the wings is the Reform Party, whose leaders have attacked …

UK had its warmest May and spring on record, Met Office figures show | UK News

The UK had its warmest May and spring since records dating back to 1884 began, provisional Met Office figures show. While it was a wet and dull season for many, the Met Office said May’s average mean temperature of 13.1C (55.58F) for the UK beat 2008’s previous record figure of 12.1C. A Met Office spokesperson said: “While it may not have felt like it for many, with sunshine in relatively short supply, provisional figures show May was the warmest on record in our series back to 1884. “This warmth was especially influenced by high overnight temperatures, with the average UK minimum temperature for May 1.2C higher than the previous record. “Rainfall was above average for the UK, while some areas in the South saw over a third more rain than average. In contrast, Northern Ireland and Scotland were slightly drier than average in the month.” Exceptional warmth, both day and night, in Scotland contributed to the UK record – with large areas more than 3.5C above average – shown in dark red below. UK no longer in recession, official figures show | Business News

The UK economy is no longer in recession, according to official figures. Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by a better-than-expected 0.6% between January and March, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. Economists had predicted the figure would be 0.4%. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said it showed the economy had “turned a corner”, adding: “We know things are still tough for many people, but the plan is working, and we must stick to it.” A recession, which is defined as two consecutive three-month periods where the economy contracts, was declared in February. It came after the ONS said GDP, a major measure of economic growth, shrank 0.3% between October and December. It followed a contraction of 0.1% in the three months from July to September. The slump was blamed on reduced consumer spending power amid high inflation and energy bills. Months of wet weather also contributed to keeping shoppers at home, commentators said. The latest figures also revealed better-than-expected growth for March. GDP was up 0.4% during the month, which was higher than the 0.1% …
