‘Bring on the fight’ over net zero, energy secretary Ed Miliband tells critics | Science, Climate & Tech News

The government is up for the fight over net zero every hour, day and month of the year, says Energy Secretary Ed Miliband. Amid growing attacks on its climate policies from the Trump administration, UK political parties and some businesses, the government this week reiterated its assertion that clean power will make Britain more secure. Wrapping up a two-day summit on energy security in London, Mr Miliband said: “The critics need to know that if they want to fight about this, this government says ‘bring it on’.” Clean power provides “energy security, lower bills [and] the biggest economic opportunity of the 21st century”, he said. Whereas “insecure” fossil fuels are to blame for “the cost of living crisis, which ruined family finances, which ruined public finances, which ruined business finances”. Renewable electricity in the UK is cheaper than gas, but the benefits don’t reach households very easily because prices are still closely linked with the cost of gas – something the government wants to fix. In the last week, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage MP …

If there’s one thing people thought they knew about Donald Trump’s second term, it was that he would take the fight to Iran. “The Iran Deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into,” he declared seven years ago, when he pulled America out of the nuclear accord and reimposed crippling sanctions on the regime. Less than two years later, Trump ordered the killing of Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani. In return, Iran allegedly targeted former Trump officials and Trump himself for assassination. On the 2024 campaign trail, Trump and his allies argued that his “maximum pressure” approach to Iran had prevented war in the Middle East, whereas sanctions relief provided by Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden had enabled the regime to flood its proxies with cash, leading to the …

NEU picks fight with unions over recruitment

NEU picks fight with unions over recruitment

The National Education Union has set itself on a fresh collision course with its sister unions after its conference voted to defy an agreement signed in 2017 and begin actively recruiting support staff. Around 60,000 of the NEU’s 460,000 members are support staff, but the union is not recognised as part of the National Joint Council which agrees their pay. The NEU was formed in 2017 by a merger of the National Union of Teachers and Association of Teachers and Lecturers. The NUT did not allow support staff members, but around 30,000 in the ATL joined the new union. At the time of its formation, the NEU signed an agreement with Unison, the GMB and Unite not to actively recruit their current or recent members. But as the union has grown in popularity, its support staff numbers have swelled. ‘Cease all attempts to appease sister unions’ At its conference in Harrogate this week, the union voted through a motion calling on its ruling executive to “begin actively and openly recruiting with immediate effect” and “cease …

Refusing to fight: Israelis against the war in Gaza – video | Israel-Gaza war

For many Israelis, military service is a rite of passage that lasts two to three years. Being such a formative part of the social contract in Israel, it is unusual for eligible young people to refuse their draft orders. Every year some ask for exemptions, but only a handful openly declare themselves as conscientious objectors, commonly known as refuseniks. However, since 7 October and the war in Gaza, refusenik organisations say the number of people refusing the draft has risen, even though during wartime punishments are harsher. The Guardian’s Middle East correspondent, Bethan McKernan, spent time with Itamar Greenberg, an 18-year-old who has been in and out of military prison for almost a year as a result of his refusal to serve Source link

Natasha Walter is a feminist writer, human rights activist, and author of Living Dolls, A Quiet Life, and Before the Light Fades: A Family Story of Resistance. She founded the charity Women for Refugee Women in 2006, working to support and empower asylum-seeking women in the UK. We caught up with Natasha to explore how her humanist beliefs have shaped her activism and her writing. Hi Natasha! How has your humanist perspective informed or fuelled your career? Hello! My humanist perspective is threaded through everything I do, because I feel strongly that we can’t wait for a better life in the hereafter but need to create the best world possible right now for everyone and for our planet. More and more I feel that all the causes that I work on are connected and my involvement in all of them comes from a deep desire to live in a way that is in harmony with the world I’d like to see. We can’t sit back and wait for someone else to do the work that …

Milan to fight back instead of pinning troubles on bad luck, says Conceicao

Milan to fight back instead of pinning troubles on bad luck, says Conceicao

AC Milan will strive to turn around their fortunes when they host Lazio in Serie A on Sunday, coach Sergio Conceicao said, adding that the team would stop blaming their woes on bad luck. Milan will face Lazio after consecutive league defeats at Torino and Bologna over the last week, when they also went out of the Champions League with an aggregate 2-1 playoff loss to Feyenoord. “We are aware of the moment, of what happened both because of our mistakes and what we can’t control,” Conceicao told a press conference on Saturday. “We can’t cling to bad luck but we can work on what’s wrong and on the mistakes we make. And bring results.” Milan’s Serie A top-four hopes were dealt a significant blow when they lost 2-1 at Bologna on Thursday after the hosts fought back from a goal down. “I saw positive things in the first half in Bologna,” Conceicao said. “We conceded a goal that wasn’t right, there was a handball. (But) we shouldn’t cling to that, we weren’t up to …

Senior Tories Voice Concern That Party Has No Clear Plan To Fight Reform

Senior Tories Voice Concern That Party Has No Clear Plan To Fight Reform

Kemi Badenoch is under pressure to explain what the party’s position is towards Reform (Alamy) 5 min read01 March Senior Tories have privately expressed concern that the party does not yet have a coherent strategy for taking the fight to Reform UK. “There is no consolidated plan for Reform,” complained one shadow cabinet minister, describing the current approach to attacking Nigel Farage’s surging party is “ad hoc”. Talk to someone associated with the Conservative Party and they will almost certainly admit that they are worried about its future. On Wednesday evening, Tory MPs past and present bemoaned the state of the party at a central London book launch for Simon Hart – who served as chief whip to former prime minister Rishi Sunak – over white wine and cheese-flavoured breadsticks. “What the fuck is the Tory Party?” said one former Conservative MP. MPs, strategists and casualties of last year’s general election have their theories for why the Tories were defeated so heavily in July. The Conservative Party suffered its worst defeat in more than 200 years last summer, leaving Sunak’s successor Kemi Badenoch with a lightweight opposition (121 MPs) …

Easy way to fight prejudice? Teach this simple fact, study suggests

Easy way to fight prejudice? Teach this simple fact, study suggests

Want to improve global relations? The answer might be simpler than you think. A recent study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology demonstrated that showing people an eleven-minute video emphasizing the shared genes of all humans can lead to more positive attitudes towards people from other countries. This finding suggests a straightforward way to combat prejudice and encourage a sense of shared humanity. The motivation behind this research stemmed from a growing concern about prejudice and discrimination directed towards people perceived as outsiders. Across the globe, there has been a rise in nationalistic sentiments and exclusionary politics, with some leaders promoting the idea of protecting national borders and expressing bias against immigrants and minority groups. These attitudes are often rooted in the belief that different groups are fundamentally distinct from one another, and this perceived difference can fuel negative stereotypes and discriminatory behaviors. Interestingly, many people hold inaccurate beliefs about the genetic differences between racial groups. Previous research has shown that the average person estimates that different races share only about 68% of …
