SXSW Ends Music Festival in 2026: Report

SXSW Ends Music Festival in 2026: Report

South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) organizers are reportedly cutting back on the music portion of the annual event. According to the Austin American-Statesman, this will result in the 2026 edition of the festival being two days shorter than this year’s, which ran March 7-15. Next year’s edition is set for March 12-18. The move eliminates the weekend traditionally dedicated to music performances and a conference for the first time in SXSW history. The news comes just after the end of the 2025 edition, which wrapped Saturday. Participation in the music festival has reportedly been dropping since the 2010s, when the average band count peaked at around 2,000. This year’s edition reportedly saw 1,012 bands showcasing. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Penske Media for comment. Penske Media, the owner of THR, invested in SXSW in April 2021 as part of what it described as a long-term partnership with the festival. In recent years, the film and television festival has become a bigger part of SXSW, this year drawing the likes of Michelle Obama (who recorded a …

Adding local color, American Hindus fashion Holi into a festival of belonging

Adding local color, American Hindus fashion Holi into a festival of belonging

(RNS) — Anshul Virmani, a software consultant in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, said his colleagues at work begin asking about Holi long before his children do. “They always ask, ‘When is the color festival? When are you guys gonna do the color-themed event?’” Most Americans would be hard-pressed to name any Hindu holiday, but Holi, the vibrant festival that involves playfully throwing pink, purple, yellow and other brightly hued powders, has become far and away the most recognizable, if still mysterious, event for non-Hindus. In the past decade, Holi celebrations across the U.S. have increased, often filling up an entire month’s weekends or two. While diaspora Hindus are finding new ways to celebrate Holi in their new environs, from family-friendly confetti throwing at public parks to neon-glow parties at the hottest nightclubs, many are also sharing the tradition with a wider audience. “We’ve seen a lot of people who are not from South Asia coming to our events,” said Virmani, who is an event planner in his spare time. His company, AV Entertainment, will host six Holi …

A robot nearly headbutted a festival spectator in China – here are four urgent steps to make the tech safer

A robot nearly headbutted a festival spectator in China – here are four urgent steps to make the tech safer

Humanoid robots are supposed to be our loyal assistants, but we saw another side to them the other day. Chinese robot manufacturer Unitree was demonstrating its latest H1 robots at a lantern festival in the city of Taishan, Guangdong province, when one walked up to the crowd barrier and seemed to lunge at an elderly woman, nearly headbutting her. The incident quickly went viral, and sparked a fierce debate about whether the robot actually attacked the woman or had tripped up. It’s mostly being overlooked that we’re a long way from having robots that could intentionally attack someone – machines like these are often remote controlled – but the danger to the public is clearly real enough. With sales of humanoid robots set to skyrocket over the next decade, the public will increasingly be at risk from these kinds of incidents. In our view as robotics researchers, governments have put very little thought into the risks. Here are some urgent steps that they should take to make humanoid robots as safe as possible. 1. Increase …

Is Ed Sheeran in a Berlin Film Festival Movie? No, Wesley Byrne Is.

Is Ed Sheeran in a Berlin Film Festival Movie? No, Wesley Byrne Is.

If you watch Austrian writer-director Florian Pochlatko’s feature film debut How to Be Normal and the Oddness of the Other World (Wie man normal ist und die Merkwürdigkeiten der anderen Welt) in the Perspectives program of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, you may catch yourself rubbing your eyes and wondering: Is Ed Sheeran really in this movie? And how the heck did they get him? That’s no coincidence. Pochlatko’s film, among other things, reflects on such questions as what is real and what is normal. The movie’s cast is led by Luisa-Céline Gaffron (And Tomorrow the Entire World) and also features Elke Winkens, Cornelius Obonya, and Felix Pöchhacker, among others. And yes, the British man protagonist Pia meets is called Ned and does look a lot like Ed Sheeran. But the actor’s name is Wesley Byrne, and he is a street cleaner who lives in the Greater Manchester area. IMDb credits him on the film as Wesley Joseph Byrne. But the 32-year-old tells THR that “Wesley Byrne is fine.” Via Zoom, Byrne also talked to …

Reverence for the sacred waters of the Ganga and belief in its power to wash away sins bring millions to India’s Maha Kumbh festival

Reverence for the sacred waters of the Ganga and belief in its power to wash away sins bring millions to India’s Maha Kumbh festival

(The Conversation) — Millions of people have been visiting Prayagraj, a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, to take part in the Maha Kumbh festival – a six-week-long event that began on Jan. 13, 2025. Called the world’s largest religious gathering, the event has already drawn 148 million people. Attendance is expected to exceed 400 million by the time it ends on Feb. 26, and surging crowds have already claimed dozens of lives at the sacred site. Attendees range from Indian business tycoons and members of parliament to social media personages, film stars and celebrities, including the philanthropist billionaire Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs, who is a member of an ashram in Prayagraj. As a historian of the Ganga and its ecology, I am captivated by the enduring power of unwavering devotion that continues to drive pilgrims to this sacred site, despite the dangers posed by surging crowds and the spread of contagion. At least 30 people have been trampled to death and 60 have been injured in …

Compare the “It Ain’t Me Babe” Scene from A Complete Unknown to the Real Bob Dylan & Joan Baez Performance at the Newport Folk Festival

A Complete Unknown, the new movie about Bob Dylan’s rise in the folk-music scene of the early nineteen-sixties and subsequent electrified break with it, has been praised for not taking excessive liberties, at least by the standards of popular music biopics. Its conversion of a real chapter of cultural history has entailed various conflations, compressions, and rearrangements, but you’d expect that from a Hollywood director like James Mangold. What many viewers’ judgment will come down to is less historical veracity than whether they believe Timothée Chalamet as the young Bob Dylan — or rather, as the young Bob Dylan they’ve always imagined. Still, much depends on the rest of the cast, who portray a host of major folk- and folk-adjacent figures including Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, Alan Lomax, and the late Peter Yarrow. No performance apart from Chalamet’s has received as much attention as Monica Barbaro’s Joan Baez. In those characters’ key scene together they take the stage at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival and sing “It Ain’t Me Babe,” a Dylan song …
