Why ‘Time on Feet’ Is Such a Powerful Measure of Endurance

This story is from Manual, GQ’s flagship newsletter offering useful advice on style, health, and more, four days a week. Sign up here to get it in your inbox. Most runners take pride in detailed metrics—miles logged, pace per mile, personal bests. But there’s one simpler number that might deserve more of your attention: “Time on feet” (TOF), which is all about tracking how long you’re out there rather than fixating on distance or pace. Instead of aiming for a four-mile run at 8:30 pace, you could substitute a 45-minute session on a manual treadmill without worrying about how far or fast you went. While this approach is most popular in ultrarunning, where athletes spend hours and hours on the trail, it’s also beneficial for everyone from first-time 5k participants to seasoned marathoners—and, really, anyone who wants a higher VO2 max. (Which is everyone, right?) Keep It Simple For competitive runners, the pure amount of time you spend running is a strong indicator of success. A 2023 study showed that training volume—not the average or …

Nike’s Prototype Shoes Squeezed and Heated Our Weary Feet at CES 2025. Here’s What They Feel Like

“So far it feels like it’s vibrating, almost like a massage, sort of.” Those are the words of my colleague, CNET Senior Editor Lisa Eadicicco, when she slipped her feet into a new kind of Nike shoe at CES 2025. Made in partnership with Hyperice, these boatlike booties are basically recovery high-tops festooned with buttons and designed to help your weary tootsies recover from soreness and strain. Instead of you being laid up on the couch with heating pads, or sliding into compression socks with no additional heating element, these on-the-go boots put heat and compression both into footwear that works on you while you walk around. What’s more, buttons let …

Africa’s newest fintech unicorns are winning by keeping their feet on the ground

Africa’s newest fintech unicorns are winning by keeping their feet on the ground

Africa’s tech ecosystem just got a boost of attention, with South Africa’s TymeBank and Nigeria’s Moniepoint both raising funds in recent weeks at valuations of over $1 billion and joining the coveted unicorn pantheon. But those valuations don’t just reflect investor confidence. They signal the success they’ve had in taking disruptive fintech models originally developed for mature economies, and scaling by tailoring them to work in a region where nearly half the population remains unbanked. Both companies’ primary aim has been to simplify banking for individuals and businesses in two of Africa’s largest economies. TymeBank began by offering retail customers low-cost bank accounts and savings products before expanding into business banking, providing working capital to small businesses in South Africa. Meanwhile, Moniepoint started out in Nigeria supporting small businesses with accounts, payments, loans, and expense tools and has recently expanded into retail banking. Importantly, both fintechs are taking a hybrid approach to banking, blending the convenience of digital banking with real-world, physical touchpoints. “In Africa, it’s a catch-22: you can’t have one thing without the …

I have wide feet and I finally found a popular running shoe that actually fits—and it’s reduced on Amazon right now

I have wide feet and I finally found a popular running shoe that actually fits—and it’s reduced on Amazon right now

Not only am I runner, I spend a lot of time writing about shoes and other athletic gear, but I have a secret. My wide feet rarely fit the most popular shoes. I have been wearing Altra running shoes for six years and they have been my go-to brand because you can rely on an Altra shoe to have a wide toebox. Altra has great options for both trail and road running, but I haven’t found them to be the most stylish and really wanted to fit comfortably into one of the pairs my running friends were talking about. Then, I got lucky. Last fall I was asked to help with product testing and when I saw the Brooks Ghost 15 on the list I quickly put my name next to it in the spreadsheet to claim it. I figured since I wouldn’t be spending my own money on it it would be worth trying even if it didn’t end up being a good fit. But they fit perfectly and they became my favorite. I …

Singapore Airlines Flight Fell 178 Feet in Under 5 Seconds

Singapore Airlines Flight Fell 178 Feet in Under 5 Seconds

The severe turbulence that killed one passenger and injured dozens on a recent Singapore Airlines flight led to sudden changes in altitude and airspeed, Singapore’s Transport Ministry said on Wednesday. Flight SQ321 encountered turbulence about 10 hours into a 13-hour trip to Singapore from London last week, officials said. Many of the 211 passengers had just finished breakfast. The turbulence hit as the plane was traveling over southern Myanmar at an altitude of 37,000 feet, the Transport Ministry said in a preliminary report on Wednesday. When the plane rose unexpectedly by 362 feet, probably because of an updraft, its autopilot pitched it downward, the report said. The plane also sped up unexpectedly around the same time, and the pilots manually hit a brake in response. All of that activity probably caused the injuries to the passengers and crew members as the plane lost about 178 feet of altitude in less than five seconds, the report said. People who were not wearing seatbelts became airborne before falling back down. The plane was diverted to Thailand, where …

Study sheds light on the genetic factors influencing our bone composition, paving the way for improved medical predictions and insights into our evolutionary past. (CREDIT: Creative Commons) Researchers from The University of Texas at Austin and New York Genome Center have harnessed the power of artificial intelligence to delve into the mysteries of human skeletal structure. Their groundbreaking study, featured in Science, sheds light on the genetic factors influencing our bone composition, paving the way for improved medical predictions and insights into our evolutionary past. Led by Vagheesh Narasimhan, an assistant professor of integrative biology and statistics at UT Austin, the interdisciplinary team employed advanced AI algorithms to analyze a vast array of X-ray images and genetic data. By scrutinizing over 39,000 medical images and correlating them with genetic sequences, the researchers identified 145 genetic points associated with skeletal proportions, ranging from shoulder width to leg length. “Our research underscores the transformative potential of AI in medicine, particularly in the realm of analyzing medical imaging data and integrating it with genetics on a large scale,” …

Britney Spears escorted out of LA hotspot in tears and with bare feet after emergency services called over ‘disturbance’

It was reported that police were called to the hotel late on May 1 after a “disturbance” was reported with a woman matching the singer’s description reportedly ‘harassing and threatening hotel employees and guests”.  Officers found no signs of trouble and left.  © Kevin MazurBritney Spears in 2017 TMZ reported that Britney and Paul were then “partying and drinking” in their room but reportedly became entangled in a “huge physical altercation” in which Britney “may have hurt her leg”. I can confirm no-one was …

How ‘The Fall Guy’ Stuntman Troy Lindsay Brown Plunged 150 Feet and Lived to Tell the Tale

How ‘The Fall Guy’ Stuntman Troy Lindsay Brown Plunged 150 Feet and Lived to Tell the Tale

Troy’s father, Bob Brown, was one of Hollywood’s premiere stunt performers of the 1980s and ’90s, a double for Jim Carrey in The Mask and The Cable Guy and for Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Action Hero, to name just a few of the dozens of films in which he endured punches, plunges, and crashes. Bob still does it today, although in recent years he has transitioned more to the role of stunt supervisor. In 2002, when Troy was around 3 years old and his dad was 43, Bob set a high-fall record by jumping through a skyscraper window 20 stories in the air—while engulfed in flames—for the World Stunt Awards ceremony on ABC. “I just grew up with it,” Troy tells Vanity Fair. “It was just like, this is what my dad does. He just does stunts in movies, and I always thought that was the coolest thing ever. I would bring my dad into show-and-tell at school and just have him talk about high falls.” A few years later, when Bob was the …
