Hathaway, who is currently promoting the film The Idea of You, opened up about her decision to stop drinking alcohol in a new interview, while talking about her health and being in her forties. “There are so many other things I identify as milestones. I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober,” the 41-year-old told The New York Times. “That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift. The fact of the matter is I hesitate at calling things ‘middle age’ simply because I can be a semantic stickler and I could get hit by a car later today. We don’t know if this is middle age. We don’t know anything.” Hathaway first spoke about losing her desire to drink in a …

Anne Hathaway Reveals She’s Five Years Sober: ‘That Feels Like a Milestone’

While Anne Hathaway rang in her 40th birthday in 2022, there’s something else she’s achieved that, to her, qualifies as more of a milestone: five years of sobriety.  In an interview with The New York Times, the Oscar winner, who is currently promoting her upcoming film adaptation of Robinne Lee’s book, The Idea of You, was asked about her 40th birthday and her thoughts on “middle age.” “There are so many other things I identify as milestones. I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober,” she says. “That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift. The fact of the matter is I hesitate at calling things ‘middle age’ simply because I can be a semantic stickler and I could get hit by a car later today. We don’t know if this is middle age. We don’t know anything.” Hathaway first addressed her sobriety during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in January 2019. During her sit-down at the time, the actress said she had decided the previous October to …

The Prince and Princess of Wales will be celebrating 13 years of marriage tomorrow and the heir to the throne is said to make the day a special one for his beloved wife. Prince William and Princess Kate wedding took place on Friday, April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey in London, with the ceremony being watched by millions of people worldwide. This year, following Kate’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment, the celebration is bound to be “very private”, according to King Charles’s former butler, Grant Harrold. Mr Harrold, who worked for the monarch for seven years at Highgrove House, claimed William will make sure Kate is spoiled this year and could make one particular move he’s now famous for. Speaking on behalf of Spin Genie, the former royal butler said: “We’ve got the anniversary of William and Catherine on the 29th of April. “With everything going on with Kate, that won’t be a public thing, that’s going to be very private. “Behind closed doors I’m sure William will work to make sure she’s spoiled. It’s …

At F.C. Porto, a Toxic Presidential Race Feels Typical for 2024

At F.C. Porto, a Toxic Presidential Race Feels Typical for 2024

Things started with a brawl and have scarcely gotten better from there. Over the course of the past five months or so, there have been a string of arrests; allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering; dark whispers of illegal data breaches; vague accusations of intimidation; and several charged invectives about financial impropriety, dishonesty and betrayal. Across the globe this year, at least 64 countries will hold elections. So, too, will the European Union. The campaigns will be fierce. Frequently, they may be toxic. Few, though, will prove quite so virulent — or offer quite such an instructive case study of the state of democracy in 2024 — as the one to decide who gets to be president of F.C. Porto. Like dozens of clubs around Europe, Porto — one of the three great houses of Portuguese soccer — is owned by its members. Their number is currently somewhere north of 140,000. Every few years, the club holds an election, for both a president and an executive board, to determine who should run the club …

“Sometimes I would push away our audience”: “The Sympathizer” director Park Chan-wook feels for us

“Sometimes I would push away our audience”: “The Sympathizer” director Park Chan-wook feels for us

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook wants us to picture fireworks while watching “The Sympathizer.”  That image inspires his visual interpretation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel and as he explains to me through an interpreter, it recurs time and again onscreen. The premiere holds the first volley during the fall of Saigon as flares streak the sky and bombs pummel the airstrip where the Captain (Hoa Xuande) is desperately fleeing with his best friend Bon (Fred Nguyen Khan). Now they’ve settled into American life and Los Angeles, there will be an Independence Day celebration. Eventually the Captain takes a job as a cultural consultant on a movie using pyrotechnics. As Park explains, these aren’t simply literal interpretations but metaphorical. Nguyen’s prose is the wick that ignited the charges he set on our screens. “I tried very hard to make his colorful writing into a visual form,” Park explained in a recent Zoom interview. Thus, fireworks. Both as a screenwriter and director, Park’s vision is precise, strategic and guided by a solid philosophy. In his seven-part limited series, which he developed …

Mood.camera is an iOS app that feels like using a retro analog camera

Mood.camera is an iOS app that feels like using a retro analog camera

Phone cameras have evolved a lot, with image processing becoming increasingly important and granular controls to help users tweak their images. Despite that, many people are still fond of old-school photography styles and techniques. Developer Alex Fox wanted to focus on that nostalgia while building the Mood.camera app. The iPhone app lets you switch between different retro filters to capture photos. You can also adjust quality and tone through a dial. You can easily switch between different lenses and adjust exposure from the main screen. All of this sounds familiar, but what you don’t get is the live preview of what the photo would look like once it “Develops” — and that makes for some fascinating results. Image Credits: Alex Fox Fox said that with this app, he wanted users to focus on the image in the viewfinder rather than the effects, which is why he did not include a live preview feature — you see the same thing as you see in the default camera app. In the same vein, the app has no editing …

Music – and only music, it seemed – could speak to the way that inequality was crushing the zeal of a generation. This is the milieu of This Town, a new six-part BBC One series from Steven Knight that celebrates how, at the margins of society, music is not a distraction but an escape. Birmingham, 1980s. Gentle poet Dante (Levi Brown), wandering the streets a heartbroken mess, runs smack into a combustible clash between protesters and police. There, he connects with livewire Jeannie (Eve Austin). “You still weird then?” she asks him. Elsewhere, sensitive Bardon (Ben Rose) is being pressured by his father to engage in activities in support of the IRA, while Dante’s brother Gregory (Jordan …
