John Mayer Just Wore the Rolex He Made Famous

John Mayer Just Wore the Rolex He Made Famous

Imagine being so far down the Rolex rabbit hole, so heavily Crowned, that you have your own Daytona named after you. Or, at least nicknamed after you, like you’re a modern-day Paul Newman. That’s precisely what happened to John Mayer when he talked up this then-overlooked yellow-gold version of the Daytona with a green dial known as the ref. 116508 back on an episode of Hodinkee’s Talking Watches in 2019. In the video, Mayer called it a sleeper hit but that description wouldn’t be accurate much longer. The singer’s ref. 116508 retailed for $34,650 back in 2016 the “John Mayer” Daytona quickly took off into the stratosphere after the famed singer-songwriter-guitarist name-checked it. Suddenly, secondary-market prices were hitting $70-$100K depending upon condition, the presence of box and papers, etc. The “Mayer Effect,” it would seem, was clearly real. Mayer brought the watch back out this week during his live performance for SiriusXM at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York. Measuring 40mm in yellow gold, the six-digit 116508 debuted at Baselworld 2016. Though it’s spottable …

Billie Jean King’s Most Famous Adidas Sneakers Are Back for the First Time Ever

US Open season is upon us. Qualifiers are already underway in New York City ahead of the main draw’s official start on Sunday—though Adidas hasn’t wasted any time in ringing in the 2026’s final Grand Slam in style. Today, to commemorate one of the tournament’s most famous competitors, the Three Stripes are bringing back Billie Jean King’s most iconic tennis shoes for the first time ever. King, now 82, is one of the fiercest competitors ever to take the court—a true pioneer who bagged 12 major titles over the course of her 22-year career, securing every Slam at least once along with half a dozen Wimbledon trophies. Today, every tennis star who plays in the US Open’s Arthur Ashe Stadium will walk past her most famous words, which are painted inside the players’ entrance tunnel: “Pressure is a privilege.” King would know—those Slam titles aren’t won easily. But there’s one non-tournament match that stands as perhaps the defining moment of King’s legacy on the court: 1973’s infamous Battle of the Sexes. Courtesy of Adidas That …

Invincible trotter Varenne, Italy’s most famous horse, dies at 31

Aug 18 : Italian horse Varenne transcended sport during a record-smashing career as the world’s greatest trotter, becoming a symbol of elegance and athletic prowess and appearing as a celebrity on popular TV shows. Varenne died of a heart attack on Tuesday aged 31, leaving behind an estate of over 2,000 offspring and a wide community of adoring fans in Italy and abroad. Trotting, especially popular in France, Finland, Italy and North America, is a form of racing in which horses pull a light carriage called a “sulky”, manned by a driver, while maintaining a specific two-beat gait called a “trot”. In a five-year racing career spanning 1998-2002 Varenne, widely known as “the Captain”, achieved 62 victories in 73 races, including 53 Grand Prix, and earned over €6 million in prize money. “He was a Ferrari with a brain”, Varenne’s loyal driver Giampaolo Minnucci told Italian daily La Stampa in an interview last month. In 2002 Varenne thrilled the crowd when, during a presentation of horses and drivers at Milan’s San Siro stadium at the …

How Raphael’s Transfiguration of Christ Inspired One of the World’s Most Famous Atheists

How Raphael’s Transfiguration of Christ Inspired One of the World’s Most Famous Atheists

Published: Aug 10, 2026written by Simon Lea, PhD Philosophy   For Nietzsche, the greatest achievement for a human being was to become a “yes-sayer” to life. And, therefore, the highest praise he could bestow upon an individual would be an acknowledgment that they say yes to life. Nietzsche says of Raphael, with reference to his masterpiece the Transfiguration, that the Italian Renaissance painter “said yes, and did yes.” However, Nietzsche also believed that Christianity was the ultimate force of nay-saying. It is strange then that a painting of Christ’s transfiguration so inspired him.   Raphael’s Famous Painting   Raphael was commissioned to paint the Transfiguration in 1517 by Cardinal Giulio de Medici, who would later become Pope Clement VII in 1523. It was to be an altarpiece for a cathedral in the southern French town of Narbonne, where Medici held the office of archbishop.   Raphael died in 1520 before the completion of the Transfiguration. Speculation and conjecture were rife on how much of the final painting was actually done by Raphael and how much …

MAGA’s Most Famous Prisoner Is Free

MAGA’s Most Famous Prisoner Is Free

This article was featured in the One Story to Read Today newsletter. Sign up for it here. Earlier this year, Tina Peters was languishing in a Colorado women’s prison, eating processed food, and complaining of declining health—including a persistent cough, digestive issues, and bumps on her skin. But by the end of June, the woman who was convicted on charges tied to tampering with voting equipment under her control in 2020 strolled into the White House, sporting a tailored pinstripe suit and red lipstick, her hair cut in a sharp bob. She feasted on a fried-chicken-and-noodle dish with President Trump in his private dining room and posed for photos in the Oval Office. She told the president about her ordeal and “what prison does to a person,” and they both bemoaned the state of the nation’s voting systems. “He was kind. He listened,” Peters told me in an email. Peters, once a martyr to the MAGA cause, is now a free woman, feted by the stolen-election movement. The former clerk and recorder of Mesa County, …

Why Does Every Famous Guy Have a Rogue Forehead Curl?

Why Does Every Famous Guy Have a Rogue Forehead Curl?

Once you notice it, you can’t stop seeing it. House of the Dragon star Fabien Frankel’s been wearing one for months. Pedro Pascal has one in Behemoth!. Paul Anthony Kelly, wig or not, rocks one in the new season of American Horror Story. Fresh off Spain’s World Cup win, Ferran Torres celebrated with one hanging over his forehead, proving you don’t actually need curly hair to pull it off, either. Off Campus’ Belmont Cameli’s got one. And yesterday, Charles Melton arrived at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations with (you guessed it) a rogue little curl sitting front and center. Paul Archuleta/Getty Images It makes sense. Men’s grooming has spent the past few years moving away from razor-sharp fades and perfect slick-backs. Hair now looks better when it has more life to it. The rogue forehead curl does exactly that. It softens the face, breaks up an otherwise tidy haircut, and gives everything a little bit of motion. Most importantly, it makes it look like you weren’t trying too hard, even though you almost certainly were. The trick …
