MANCHESTER, England : Manchester United centre back Harry Maguire is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the Premier League season with a muscle injury he sustained in training, the club said on Sunday, which could rule him out of the FA Cup final. Maguire, who has started United’s past six matches, will likely be out for about three weeks, the club said in a statement on Sunday, adding he “will be fine” for Euro 2024 which kicks off on June 14, and could possibly return in time for the FA Cup final versus Manchester City on May 25 at Wembley. The age of the solar sail is arriving sooner than expected

The age of the solar sail is arriving sooner than expected

NASA has launched the latest attempt to test solar sail propulsion technology.  The Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3), consisting of a CubeSat the size of a microwave oven and a solar sail, took off on board a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from Launch Complex I on the Mahia Peninsula in New Zealand. After reaching 600 miles above the Earth, the ACS3 deployed its sail. The ACS3’s solar sail is made of a reflective polymer and is held by a boom made of carbon fiber composite material. Previous solar sail tests have used metal booms that have tended to warp due to the temperature extremes of space. The sail is 680 square feet in area. The ACS3’s goal is modest, to use the solar sail to raise and lower the spacecraft’s orbit. But the technology might lead to sailing ships of the heavens, which use the pressure of sunlight to fly the solar system and even to visit other star systems. A spacecraft that uses a solar sail has both advantages and disadvantages over those propelled by rockets. A spacecraft propelled by a solar sail has three main …

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, the county government’s top executive, declared a disaster Thursday as mandatory evacuations were ordered along the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. Gaza truce talks expected to resume in Egypt

Women inspect as a house damaged in an Israeli strike lies in ruin, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, May 3, 2024. HATEM KHALED / REUTERS Talks were expected to resume on Saturday, May 4, in Egypt aimed at halting months of war in Gaza between Hamas militants and Israel that have triggered widening protests around the world. Mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United States have been waiting for the Palestinian Islamist movement to respond to a proposal that, according to details released by Britain, would halt fighting for 40 days and exchange hostages for Palestinian prisoners. Months of negotiations stalled in part on Hamas’s demand for a lasting ceasefire and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s repeated vows to crush the group’s remaining fighters in Rafah, along the Egyptian border in Gaza’s far south. The prospect of a Rafah invasion, threatened for three months alongside stop-start truce talks, has sparked intensifying global alarm. After a meeting in Cairo about a week …

DOJ expected to announce indictment of Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar, sources say

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department is expected to announce the indictment of longtime Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, on Friday, two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News. Cuellar’s home and campaign office in Laredo, Texas, were raided in January 2022 as part of a federal investigation into Azerbaijan and a group of U.S. businessmen who have ties to the country, law enforcement said at the time. His office had pledged to cooperate with the investigation. In April, Cuellar’s lawyer, Joshua Berman, told some news outlets that federal authorities informed him he was not the target of the investigation. Cuellar is a one-time co-chair of the Congressional Azerbaijan Caucus. It wasn’t immediately clear if the indictment was related to the 2022 raid. The Justice Department declined to comment. Cuellar’s staff were calling other member offices Friday seeking advice on how to handle the situation, one source with knowledge of those calls told NBC News. In a statement Friday, Cuellar denied any wrongdoing, saying that he had “proactively sought legal advice” from the House Ethics Committee, which had issued “more than one …

John Swinney is expected to declare his bid to become the new leader of the SNP later today, Sky News understands.
