National Catholic Reporter names Wall St. Journal’s James Grimaldi as executive editor

(RNS) — Ending a yearlong vacancy atop its editorial team, the National Catholic Reporter, the 60-year-old, left-leaning Catholic media outlet, announced that James V. Grimaldi, a senior writer at The Wall Street Journal, has been named executive editor.  Grimaldi, 62, is set to begin work Sept. 16, filling a position that has been vacant since August of 2023, when Heidi Schlumpf stepped down after four years in the role, becoming a senior correspondent. Grimaldi will report directly to Joe Ferullo, the newspaper’s CEO and publisher. In an arrangement in step with the technology-aided dislocations of modern journalism, Grimaldi will oversee the editorial operation of NCR, which is headquartered in Kansas City, from Washington, where the newspaper has offices in the historic Methodist Building on Capitol Hill. Ferullo, a retired television executive, works from Los Angeles.  Ferullo said of Grimaldi’s appointment in a statement, “James is dedicated to NCR’s mission; he will elevate and expand NCR’s excellent journalism at a pivotal moment in the history of the Catholic Church. All of us at NCR — including …

Meet the New AHA Staff: Executive Director Fish Stark

Learn more about the AHA’s new executive director! TheHumanist.com: What is your educational and work background? I’m driven by a deep belief in the dignity of all people, and have spent my career building programs and movements that help people realize it in themselves and defend it in others. For years, I was the Director of Programs at a non-profit called Peace First, which trained and funded youth activists around the world to design and lead social innovation projects in their communities—students leading the first sex-ed programs in their rural village in Kenya, young people standing up programs to prevent and protest gun violence in the US.  We helped young people around the globe fight for social justice and find meaning through service. From there, I joined the tech startup world, creating digital programs to help kids build positive mental health. I ran the research and curriculum team at a company that was creating a secular, gender-inclusive Scouting program for kids, and we launched beloved chapters in five cities until we pivoted to building apps …

Post Office inquiry: Former executive called ‘gatekeeper of the remote access secret’ | Business News

The former head of accounting for the Post Office has been described as the “gatekeeper of the remote access secret”, the inquiry has heard. Rod Ismay authored the first report into faulty accounting system Horizon, in August 2010, which concluded the software was robust. Hundreds of sub-postmasters were wrongfully convicted between 1999 and 2015 as a result of flaws within the system. Giving evidence at the inquiry, Mr Ismay rejected barrister Flora Page’s description, when she asked if he was “the Post Office’s gatekeeper for the remote access secret”. The fact that branch accounts could be accessed remotely was a significant piece of evidence undermining convictions. Ms Page, a lawyer for victims, questioned whether Mr Ismay’s team “signed off” when Fujitsu sought approval for remotely accessing Post Office branch accounts. He responded that his team were “one of the people approached” as shown in a “three options paper”. More on Post Office Scandal When pushed further on ‘routine’ tampering by Fujitsu with accounts and if his Post Office team specifically gave approval, he replied: “No, …

PR executive at Chinese tech firm Baidu apologizes for comments seen as glorifying overwork

HONG KONG — A top public relations executive from Chinese technology firm Baidu apologized Thursday after she made comments in a series of videos that critics said glorified a culture of overwork. Baidu’s head of communications, Qu Jing, drew a public outcry in China after she implied in the videos that she was not concerned about her employees as she was “not their mom” and said she only cared about results. She also said that the relationship between her and her subordinates was purely an “employer-employee relationship.” The backlash was swift, with many on social media platforms such as Weibo criticizing Qu as lacking empathy. Qu posted an apology Thursday on her private WeChat account, where she “sincerely apologized to all netizens” and clarified that she had not sought Baidu’s permission before posting the videos. Qu said that her short videos did not represent Baidu’s stance. Baidu operates China’s dominant search engine as well as the Ernie bot, an artificial intelligence service similar to ChatGPT. “Many of the criticisms are very pertinent, I am reflecting …

Natalie Robyn, FIA’s first female chief executive, leaves post after 18 months | Formula One

Natalie Robyn is leaving Formula One’s governing body after serving just 18 months as its first chief executive, the FIA said on Wednesday. Robyn was one of the most senior female executives in motorsport and her arrival from the auto industry was hailed by the sport’s governing body, the FIA, as a “transformative moment” for an organisation led by Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem, from the United Arab Emirates, highlighted Robyn’s appointment as proof of his commitment to equality and diversity after a controversy over remarks he had once made about women “who think they are smarter than men”. The governing body said Robyn had decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere and was leaving by mutual agreement at the end of May. “Performing in the role of CEO at the FIA has been an enormous privilege and I am grateful to have directed a programme of restructuring and reform,” she was quoted as saying. “Now is the time to step away in the knowledge that the organisation is better placed for the challenges which lie ahead.” …

The grand pooh-bah problem: How to spot “executive ego dysfunction”

The grand pooh-bah problem: How to spot “executive ego dysfunction”

About fifteen years ago, I had what I’ll charitably call a crisis of confidence. After spending years successfully climbing the corporate ladder, I hit a wall. Hard. I had been on a pretty awesome professional trajectory for more than two decades, which included being named the youngest vice president and division general manager ever at an iconic, century-old retailer in my mid-thirties, and then, just a few years later, being elected an executive officer at one of the most prestigious retailers in the world.  Despite this, my career, and just about everything else around me, all came crashing down. Not only had I resigned from a position that, at that time, seemed perfect for me, but because I allowed my career success to become so intertwined with how I viewed my general worthiness as a human being, losing my job meant I had also lost myself. I sank into a very deep and dark hole of depression. Looking back on things now, I would say I experienced something between a complete spiritual collapse and an …

Microsoft Executive Says AI Is a “New Kind of Digital Species”

Microsoft Executive Says AI Is a “New Kind of Digital Species”

DeepMind cofounder and Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman took the stage at TED2024 last week to lay out his vision for an AI-driven future. And according to the AI boss, if you really want to grasp how impactful AI might be to the human species, it might be useful to think of AI as another “species” entirely. “I think AI should best be understood as something like a new digital species,” Suleyman — who left the Google-owned DeepMind lab in 2022 — told the crowd. “Now, don’t take this too literally,” he admonished, “but I predict that we’ll come to see them as digital companions, new partners in the journeys of all our lives.” In short, Suleyman’s prediction seems to be that AI agents will play a deeply involved role in human lives, performing tasks with more agency than now-conventional devices like computers and smartphones. This means they’ll be less like tools, and more like buzzy virtual beings — and thus, according to Suleyman, akin to another “species” entirely. As for what this world would actually look like …

Post Office inquiry: Former complaints handler executive says she never ‘knowingly’ did anything wrong | Business News

A former top Post Office executive has told the inquiry into the Horizon scandal that she never “knowingly” did anything wrong. Angela van den Bogerd, who held various roles over 35 years at the organisation, made the comment after opening her evidence on Thursday by saying she was “truly, truly sorry” for the “devastation” caused to wrongly convicted sub-postmasters. Her roles at the Post Office included handling complaints about its Horizon software, which was provided by Japanese firm Fujitsu. More than 700 Post Office managers were prosecuted between 1999 and 2015, after the system made it seem like money was missing from branches. At the time, the company insisted Horizon was robust. Ms van der Bogerd, who was played by Coronation Street actress Katherine Kelly in the ITV drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, had previously not spoken publicly since a 2019 High Court case. At the time, Judge Peter Fraser criticised her testimony and said she “did not give me frank evidence, and sought to obfuscate matters, and mislead me”. Jason Beer KC, …

EA executive says Japan’s ratings board was unfairly hard on Dead Space remake

EA executive says Japan’s ratings board was unfairly hard on Dead Space remake

Stellar Blade’s rating by Japan’s Computer Entertainment Rating Organization has drawn pushback from an Electronic Arts executive with implications that publisher’s game, Dead Space’s 2023 remake, faced an unfair double standard. The criticism comes as Stellar Blade known for its stylish presentation, violence, and a provocatively dressed female protagonist, cleared CERO rating without losing any content to censors. Fans anticipating the PlayStation exclusive action adventure had been concerned Stellar Blade’s presentation would be controversial enough that the ratings board would demand changes. Not so. Stellar Blade was given a CERO D rating, the second strictest in that country, which permits anyone age 17 or over to buy the game. But Dead Space’s remake was not even given a rating when it was reviewed last year, meaning that game is unavailable for sale, at least officially. Japan’s ratings board can seriously alter a publisher’s sales plans Shaun Noguchi, Electronic Arts’ general manager for Japan, took to X to complain their game got comparatively heavy handed treatment for having roughly the same level of violent content. “The …
