Jennifer Lyell, SBC abuse survivor and former Lifeway executive, has died

[ad_1] (RNS) — Jennifer Lyell, an editor and author whose promising career in Christian publishing was derailed when she accused a former Southern Baptist leader of abuse, died Saturday (June 7). She was 47. “Jennifer passed gently into the arms of her Redeemer, surrounded by loved ones,” said her friend Rachael Denhollander, who said Lyell had suffered “a series of massive strokes, leading to her becoming unconscious sometime Monday afternoon. She was found Thursday evening after missing a medical appointment.” For much of her adult life, Lyell had been a Southern Baptist success story. She came to faith at 20 at a Billy Graham crusade, went to seminary, dreamed of becoming a missionary, taught the Bible to young women and children and became a vice president at Lifeway, the Southern Baptist Convention’s publishing arm. There she worked on about a dozen New York Times bestsellers, according to a biography from her time at Lifeway. By 2019, she was one of the highest-ranking women leaders in the nation’s largest Protestant denomination. Lyell had gone into publishing …

Tesla Executive Admits That Self-Driving Is Going Nowhere Fast

[ad_1] Nearly ten years ago in 2015, rising tech entrepreneur Elon Musk made a bold announcement: Tesla vehicles would be fully driving themselves by 2017. The billionaire was talking about vehicles with level 5 autonomy — a designation by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) commonly used as the benchmark for a full self-driving car that can drive where its passengers please with no intervention. He repeated those claims in January 2016, saying “summon should work anywhere connected by land and not blocked by borders” within two years. For example, if you’re in Los Angeles and your Tesla is in New York, you’d be able to summon it to you from across the country — at least according to his vision, which many took as gospel. By June of that year, Musk called level 5 autonomy a “solved problem.” He did so again in 2017. And again in 2018. Then the next year. And the year after that. You probably see where this is going. Now in 2025, Tesla isn’t looking meaningfully closer to Level 5 …

NSS: NI Executive must “stop dawdling” on integrated schools

[ad_1] The Northern Ireland Executive must “stop dawdling” and ensure integrated education is expanded as soon as possible, the National Secular Society has said. The NI Department of Education (DoE) is consulting on its “Vision 2030” strategy for integrated education. Integrated schools proactively teach pupils from Catholic, Protestant and other religious and nonreligious backgrounds together, in an effort to end religious sectarianism and segregation in NI. Over 90% of pupils in Northern Ireland attend schools which are effectively segregated along religious lines. The Integrated Education Act passed in 2022 requires the Executive to support integrated schools. But despite this, and wide public support for integrated schools, there are only 71 integrated schools in NI, educating just 8% of pupils. NSS: DoE plans “lack ambition and effectiveness” Responding to the consultation, the NSS said the DoE’s “strategic aims” and “action plans” for integrated education “lack ambition and effectiveness”. It expressed concern that the action plan “consists mainly of carrying out more research and reviews, rather than actually opening new integrated schools or transforming existing schools into …

Ex-Abercrombie & Fitch chief executive Mike Jeffries ‘unfit to stand trial due to dementia’, prosecutors and defence team say | US News

[ad_1] Abercrombie & Fitch’s former chief executive is not fit to stand trial on sex trafficking charges as he is suffering from dementia, both prosecutors and his lawyers have said. Mike Jeffries has Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia and the “residual effects of a traumatic brain injury”, his defence attorneys wrote in a letter filed at a federal court in Central Islip, New York. The 80-year-old needs around-the-clock care, they added, citing evaluations by medical professionals. Prosecutors and defence lawyers are calling for Jeffries to be placed in the custody of the federal bureau of prisons for up to four months. They say he should be admitted to hospital to have treatment that could allow his criminal case to proceed. The business tycoon, who led fashion retailer A&F from 1992 to 2014, pleaded not guilty to federal sex trafficking and interstate prostitution charges in October, and was released on a $10m (£7.65m) bond. A total of 15 men allege they were induced by “force, fraud and coercion” to engage in drug-fuelled sex parties. Prosecutors have …

Executive Orders, Offices, and Laws: Democratic Conundrums in Ancient Greece and Modern America

[ad_1] An executive order is issued by the new ruler of a country. A woman defies the order in the name of higher laws. How should we as democrats think about their actions? I wrote that opening paragraph with reference to Antigone, as presented in Sophocles’s play of that name. Sophocles wrote that play as a citizen of ancient democratic Athens, to be produced with civic funding as part of its cycle of annual festivals. Although Antigone as a character lived in ancient royally governed Thebes, the play was born in the context of Athenian democratic politics and participated linguistically and thematically in its debates. Readers of this blog may also see the opening paragraph of this blog as applying to an exchange in the White House between President Donald J. Trump and Governor Janet Mills of Maine on February 5 (2025), when Governor Mills was addressed by President Trump about an executive order that he had issued that day with the title “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.” According to the New York Times …

Trump’s IVF executive order worries abortion foes

[ad_1] (RNS) — Americans are polarized on almost every issue in public life, from what books kids should be allowed to read in school to how to reform the nation’s immigration system. One thing most do agree on, regardless of party affiliation, is in-vitro fertilization — more commonly known as IVF — 70% of Americans told Pew Research they believe access to IVF is a good thing, while only 8% said it was bad, according to a 2024 survey. Members of the nation’s largest faith groups also see IVF access as a positive, including Black Protestants (69%), Catholics (65%), and the evangelical (63%) and non-evangelical (78%) varieties of white Protestants, as do the unaffiliated (78%). That’s likely one reason why Donald Trump recently issued an executive order Tuesday (Feb. 18), promising to reduce the cost of IVF. “Therefore, to support American families, it is the policy of my Administration to ensure reliable access to IVF treatment, including by easing unnecessary statutory or regulatory burdens to make IVF treatment drastically more affordable,” Trump wrote. While people …

“Great Strategic Importance” – Bitcoin Rallies As Trump Signs ‘Sovereign Wealth Fund” Executive Order

[ad_1] With Secretary of State Marco Rubio setting in El Salvador (perhaps the most bitcoin-friendly nation in the world currently), and President Trump’s crypto ‘tzar’ David Sacks’ recent comments on the importance of outpacing China on the tech (crypto and AI) front, one could be forgiven for anticipating something large coming very soon with regard the possibility of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. And sure enough, this morning,  President Trump signed an executive action he said would direct officials to create a sovereign wealth fund for the US, following through on an idea he floated during the presidential campaign. “We have tremendous potential,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday as he announced the move. The president said the action would charge Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Howard Lutnick, the nominee for Commerce secretary, with spearheading the effort. Bessent, who joined Trump at the Oval Office, said the fund would be created in the next 12 months, calling it an issue “of great strategic importance.” Lutnick suggested the fund could be used to facilitate the sale of TikTok, …

Smithsonian Institution May Not Have to Obey Trump DEI Executive Order

[ad_1] All eyes are on the Smithsonian following the announcement that the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. would cancel its diversity, equity and inclusion programs in accordance with an executive order, signed by President Trump’s within hours of taking office, that eliminates all federally funded DEI initiatives.  According to a memo of the United States Office of Personnel Management that was obtained by CBS and confirmed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, federal employees in any DEI office were to be put on paid leave “no later than 5:00pm EST on Wednesday” while steps are taken “to close/end all DEIA initiatives, offices and programs.” Related Articles But the Smithsonian, which oversees 21 museums, including ones dedicated to American art, portraiture, and African American history and culture, has a unique structure. That means the decision to adhere to Trump’s freshly penned executive order isn’t so clear.  According to the Congressional Research Service, the Smithsonian Institution is unlike other governmental bodies—it is “organizationally separate and distinct from the legislative, executive, or judicial branches of the national government.” Created …
