Most people would sacrifice some life satisfaction in exchange for a more equal society

What kind of society would you rather live in: an equal one where everyone is just about getting by? Or an unequal one where most people are doing substantially better, but a small group consistently falls behind? Now imagine having to choose that society before you were even born, but with no idea of where you’ll end up in it. Seen this way, inequality becomes a question of risk. Would people gamble on the unequal world, knowing they might be among the unlucky few? Or would they stick with a basic but adequate life for all? Back in the 18th century, philosopher and social reformer Jeremy Bentham would probably have taken the gamble. Two hundred years later, egalitarian philosopher John Rawls, who was behind this thought experiment (which he called the “veil of ignorance”), argued against it. Economists call this an efficiency-equity trade-off; balancing fairness with the sometimes competing priority of making the most of society’s finite resources. Political scientists point to such attitudes on inequality as a fundamental difference between left and right. Yet …

Artefacts hint at cultural exchange between Neanderthals and humans

Artefacts hint at cultural exchange between Neanderthals and humans

About 59,000 years ago, Homo sapiens moved into a coastal cave in Turkey that was previously home to Neanderthals. Yet the tools and trinkets found in the cave remained remarkably consistent, hinting that these ancient hominin species had a shared material culture. Situated on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, Üçağızlı II cave is a 56-square-metre space, about the size of a city studio apartment. Naoki Morimoto at Kyoto University, Japan, and his colleagues carried out the first full archaeological dig at the site in 2020. Teeth and jaw remains revealed that Neanderthals inhabited the cave from 77,000 to 59,000 years ago and our species, Homo sapiens, from 59,000 to 47,000 years ago. Altogether, nearly 20,000 stone artefacts were also recovered from the cave. But, surprisingly, the stone-tool technology used by the two human species and the objects they collected remained extraordinarily consistent throughout the entire period. This raises the possibility that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens co-existed for a while. “We cannot definitively prove a temporal or physical overlap between the two hominin species in the region of …

Graham Norton in awkward exchange with Damon Albarn over chat show ‘snub’

Graham Norton in awkward exchange with Damon Albarn over chat show ‘snub’

The Graham Norton Show viewers were left squirming after the host struggled to recall a past exchange with Damon Albarn, in which the Blur singer questioned why he hadn’t been invited back on the BBC series. The Blur singer, who was promoting his forthcoming tour with Gorillaz, appeared on the show on Friday (12 February), but asked why it had taken him nine years to return. When Norton welcomed Albarn back, saying “It’s been a minute,” he told the Irish host: “Well, you just haven’t invited me back.” Norton replied: “Well, you’re here now.” The singer then shared an alleged encounter he had with the presenter in a nightclub after recording his last appearance on the show in 2017, in which he asked him directly: “Why am I never on your show?” Norton awkwardly didn’t remember this exchange, asking: “What? I was in a nightclub? I have no recollection of that. I must’ve been quite drunk.” As the audience laughed, Albarn replied: “It must’ve been one of those nightclubs,” to which Norton said: “Yes, it …

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ episode 2 has the perfect Dunk and Egg exchange

While the Game of Thrones universe has always had moments of comedy thrown in amongst the betrayal, incest, and murder, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes Westeros’ comic streak into uncharted territory. Episode 1 had that gloriously disgusting phlegm scene, and while there are many amusing moments in episode 2, a conversation between Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) is probably the thing that made us laugh most — while also acting as the perfect representation of their relationship as a whole. Let’s recap. SEE ALSO: ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Targaryen family tree: How everyone connects What’s the conversation between Dunk and Egg? The conversation takes place after Dunk’s floundering attempt to talk to Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford), a puppeteer working at the Ashford tourney who agrees to paint a new sigil on his shield.
