Excerpted with permission from A Strategy for Human-AI Symbiosis: Concepts, Tools, and Business Models for the New AI Game by Dr Alexandra Diening. Today’s AI Renaissance is taking us on two different learning curves at once. The first has to do with method and technique. We need to learn to use the tools because they are changing everything we do at work. The second is broader: We need to understand the new landscape opening up before us at breakneck speed. Both learning curves go beyond a pure technology orientation. The first—learning to use the tools—has as much to do with human capabilities as it does with automated systems. AI technology adoption isn’t primarily a computational affair. Its transformative potential extends beyond coding algorithms. We must learn to decide what to code, what data to use, and how to use it on behalf of people. When we work with natural language processing and GenAI, we must relearn …

10 Essential Films to Watch to Understand Surrealist Cinema

10 Essential Films to Watch to Understand Surrealist Cinema

Surrealism is an art movement dating back to the 1920s. It focuses on exploring what is outside of the boundaries of reality. A permutation of Dada and heavily inspired by psychoanalysis theory, Surrealist artists were interested in the subconscious, the irrational, and dreams; they sought to challenge the very structure of rational reality. But what is surrealist cinema really like? Read on to find out.   Surrealist Cinema Movie theater. Source: Unsplash   Cinema, as an artistic language defined by a distortion of perception and fabrication of reality, was a natural attraction for the avant-garde art of the 20th century. Inspired by early Dada experimental films and the feverish works of German Expressionism, film allowed the surrealists to create pure, tangible dreams. Though there aren’t that many de facto surrealist films, surrealism was formative to cinema history when the medium was still quite young. Denying logic, narrative, and even meaning, surrealist cinema opened pathways as to what a movie could be and pushed the audiovisual language to its farther boundaries. We’re going to look …

Oracy must become as essential as literacy or numeracy

Oracy must become as essential as literacy or numeracy

More from this theme Recent articles Six months ago, I was asked by the charity Voice 21 to convene and chair an independent commission on the future of oracy in education in England. I hesitated. As a grizzled former English teacher, oracy had become fundamental to my own repertoire in class, and I’d experienced the way various activities beyond the classroom (like drama productions, debates and public speaking) enhanced the confidence of so many students. But all of those years in the classroom and in leadership had also shown me that ‘oracy’ was a slippery term. Still today, it is often met with hesitation, stemming from uncertainty about what the term actually means. Some consider it simply a ‘nice to have’, and one former schools minister dismissed it entirely as ‘idle chatter in the classroom’. But then I realised that it was once the same with ‘literacy’. This term appears to have emerged in the late nineteenth century with the beginning of formal state education – in response to the much earlier (seventeenth-century) term ‘illiteracy’. …

The Guardian view on Gaza’s unending war: a deal is as distant as ever – but more essential | Editorial

The Guardian view on Gaza’s unending war: a deal is as distant as ever – but more essential | Editorial

Joe Biden insisted it was “time for this war to end and the day after to begin” as he promoted a three-phase peace deal. Hours later, Benjamin Netanyahu shot it down as a “non-starter”. One week on, an agreement looks as remote as ever. More than 36,700 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, says its health ministry. More Israeli hostages seized in the murderous raid by Hamas on 7 October have died. On Thursday Israel bombed a UN school in central Gaza, killing at least 33 of the thousands of displaced people sheltering there, including 12 women and children, according to witnesses and hospital records. The Israel Defense Forces said it was a “precise” strike on Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters using it as a base. What is clear is that the IDF is fighting in places where it was supposed to have eliminated Hamas, while civilians are forced to return to those areas by the assault on Rafah. The Israeli government has said that this conflict will last into 2025. Some in Israel can …
