Waste Of The Day: IRS Enforcement Delayed

Waste Of The Day: IRS Enforcement Delayed

Authored by Jeremy Portnoy via RealClearInvestigations, Americans underpaid their taxes by an estimated $696 billion in 2022, according to new data released by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Most of the money came from people and businesses that understated their income. But 9% came from people who didn’t file a tax return at all, and efforts to track them down have been slow-moving as the Internal Revenue Services’ case log remains backed up. Key facts: The IRS’ backlog of cases increased when its office buildings closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 appropriated supplemental funding to help resolve the delays. However, Congress reduced that funding in 2025, and the Trump administration laid off 28% of the IRS’ workforce. As a result, “the IRS no longer has the resources to pursue all delinquent filers,” according to the inspector general. The inspector general found that nearly 39,000 people with incomes of $400,000 or more were notified in early 2024 that they had not filed a tax return. As of December …

FCC Pursuing Enforcement Proceedings for The View Equal Time

FCC Pursuing Enforcement Proceedings for The View Equal Time

FCC chair Brendan Carr confirmed Wednesday that the commission has started enforcement proceedings that will look into The View‘s alleged violations of political equal time rules. “Disney has a program called The View. And they’ve been asserting the position that The View is what is known as ‘bona fide news’ in the statute,” Carr said during a Wednesday night appearance on FOX News Channel’s The Ingraham Angle. “If you are bona fide news, you don’t have to give candidates equal air time. But, Disney and The View have not established that that program is, in fact, bona fide news. We’ve started enforcement proceedings, taking a look at that. And, again, we’re going to hold broadcasters accountable.” As of late, Carr and the FCC have argued that talk shows, including The View and others, such as Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show, do not qualify for regulatory exemptions that allow said programs to discuss political candidates without having to meet certain requirements. This marks a shift in how talk shows have long qualified for the equal opportunities exemption as …

Today Is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

Today Is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

Today, I am considering what it means to appreciate something—a people, a profession, a service, and a sacrifice. What does science, specifically positive psychology, say about the meaning and value of appreciation, and the difference between giving and receiving it? Is appreciation the same as gratitude? I come to these ideas as today, January 9, is designated as National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. If you have been following along with my articles, you will know that I am a retired police officer now working in the space of positive psychology for law enforcement. Throughout my many years in uniform, I can honestly say the expression of appreciation by others was regularly awkward to receive, yet contributed significantly to my well-being. I later learned that receiving appreciation with grace not only eased that comfort level but was also a gift to the other person. Now, in this stage of my life, I am very intentional about expressing my appreciation for those still wearing the badge, and I approach the moment with authenticity and an understanding of …

Sportsbet ‘pressured ACMA to soften enforcement announcement wording publicly’ – report

A gambling company, Sportsbet, reportedly leaned on Australia’s communications watchdog to tone down the wording of a public enforcement announcement, according to documents released under freedom of information laws. ABC News reports that in 2022, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) fined Sportsbet a then-record AUD 2.5 million ($1.7 million) after finding the company had sent marketing texts and emails to tens of thousands of people who had already tried to unsubscribe, breaching Australia’s spam laws. But documents obtained by the news outlet suggest that Sportsbet managed to convince the regulator to soften key parts of a draft media release before it was published. Independent federal MP Andrew Wilkie called the situation deeply troubling. “This is shocking at every level,” he said. “This exchange shows a very, very cosy relationship and a very unhealthy relationship.” Gambling policy expert Lauren Levin from the Gambling Policy Hub said both the company and the regulator had behaved inappropriately. “Sportsbet is totally out of line, and I think that the regulator is also totally out of line,” she …
