Sponsor Refugees Now Before Trumps Ends Key Programs to Help

Over 100 million people around the world have been displaced by war, persecution, and natural disasters. The Welcome Corps, a U.S. Department of State program started during the Biden Administration, helps these refugees start a new safer life in the United States by sponsoring their resettlement. The program supports “newly arrived refugees by securing and preparing initial housing, greeting them at the airport, enrolling children in school, helping adults find employment and meet other needs to ensure they are prepared for life in the United States.” Trump has threatened to end various legal programs for refugees, asylum seekers, and even international students to come to the U.S., so our prompt action can help people while Welcome Corps is still operating. Several individual freethinkers—humanists, atheists, secularists—have contacted me and my assistant through the Humanist Chaplaincy at American University. We have been able to help one Pakistani humanist resettle in Canada and are now helping an Iraqi humanist and his family. Still in need of urgent help are an Afghan college student hiding in Pakistan and a …

Where Freedom Ends | Laurence H. Tribe

Where Freedom Ends | Laurence H. Tribe

In Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, there is a pub named Grendel’s Den, after the monster in the Old English epic poem Beowulf. It prominently displays a comedic circular crest claiming that it was established in 1271. Long known for its microbrewed beer and convivial atmosphere, the modest bar and grill in fact opened seven hundred years later, in 1971. The story the forthcoming 2024 election brings vividly to mind began at that pub just a few years later, in 1976, when I was teaching a class about the separation of church and state in American law. I was talking about the connection between religion and the federal ban on mailing so-called obscene matter—including, as Congress viewed things a century earlier in 1873 when it passed the Comstock Act, not just printed materials but contraceptives and pregnancy-ending drugs or devices that some religious groups considered sinful.1 Named after the misogynist crusader Anthony Comstock, it outlawed, among other things, mail-order condoms, which were being delivered to men along with risqué photos that its sponsors saw as …

In the last month, the 37-year-old has become embroiled in controversy as fans criticised Lively for her “tone-deaf” approach while promoting the movie, which focuses domestic violence and abuse. The film, directed by Justin Baldoni who also stars, is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2016 bestselling novel of the same name. Amid the ongoing drama, one journalist shared her “nightmare” interview with the Gossip Girl star recorded in 2016, stating that the interaction – deemed “incredibly rude” by fans – made her “want to quit” her job. Lively is yet to directly address the criticism surrounding It Ends With Us, but is said to be “upset” and “surprised” by the negative reaction. The actor was “pretty surprised at the backlash and drama”, a …

Woman Disgusted When She Uses Tracker to See Where Her Plastic Recycling Really Ends Up

Woman Disgusted When She Uses Tracker to See Where Her Plastic Recycling Really Ends Up

“We want to know what was happening with this stuff.” Handy Device An environmentalist put a GPS tracker in with her recycling to see where it ended up — and the results were not confidence-inspiring. As Inside Climate News reports in an investigative collaboration with CBS, Houston activist and avid recycler Brandy Deason tossed an Apple Tag in with her bagged plastic waste to take to one of the city’s new recycling drop-off sites to see what really happens to recyclables. Deason dropped her secretly-tagged plastic bag off with the Houston Recycling Collaboration, a public-private partnership that launched with the help of Exxon nearly two years ago to address the city’s low recycling rates. Though the program was partially billed as being capable of melting any plastic down for reuse chemically, ICN and CBS found with the help of Deason that no such process has occurred in the 20 months since the project first began. In fact, the sorting plant that’s supposed to enact the so-called “advanced recycling” process still hasn’t opened — and won’t do so until …

Be frugal, have fun, stay focused: how to make ends meet as a student | The Guardian clearing hub

Being in your third year and having three part-time jobs may sound like a lot to juggle, but fine art student, Hassa Embalo, 21, couldn’t sound more upbeat if she tried. “I love what I do, and they’re literally all my favourite,” she laughs. Her main role is working as a wellbeing assistant at Liverpool Hope University. She gets free accommodation on campus and a salary of £600 a month. “The job is open to all third year students and postgraduates and involves looking after students at the university. So, for example, if anything goes wrong, say with our accommodation or with any mental health issues, my role is to guide them to the right people and get the help that they need.” Alongside this, she works as a student ambassador for four hours a week, and makes two social media videos each month as a content creator for the university. Embalo is not alone in working to fund her studies. Affordability is a huge issue for university students as the UK’s cost of living …
