Mariska Hargitay’s Emmy hosting is a crime against TV

Mariska Hargitay’s Emmy hosting is a crime against TV

On paper, selecting “Law & Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay as host of the 2026 Emmys telecast probably made sense. Hargitay has had a great run recently: Earlier this month, she won two Emmys for her self-directed 2025 documentary, “My Mom Jayne,” which memorializes her mother, Jayne Mansfield. Over the summer, she made her Broadway debut in the Tony-nominated “Every Brilliant Thing.” However—and this is important—“Every Brilliant Thing” is not a musical. This bears mentioning since Hargitay opened Monday’s Emmys telecast by performing “I Love TV Screens,” profaning Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” in doing so. This was but one of two song-and-dance numbers nobody (except sponsors such as Marriott) wanted, with the second roping in poor Andrew Rannells to sully Supertramp’s “Goodbye Stranger.” His reputation will recover, but will we? The longstanding joke about Emmy Awards broadcasts, among jaded TV critics anyway, is that an evening dedicated to celebrating the best TV often turns out to be one of the worst shows of the year. Boredom is the repeat offender; since Television …

Bravo VP on Emmy, Brad, Season 4 Success

Bravo VP on Emmy, Brad, Season 4 Success

Southern Hospitality has all the makings to be part of Bravo‘s upper echelon of unscripted television. The show sports a dynamic cast full of a diverse group of nightclub employees based in Charleston, South Carolina. It, too, has a pre-existing link to another Bravo series, tied to Southern Charm alumni Leva Bonaparte who employs (most) of the cast at Republic Garden & Lounge.  But the main element making Southern Hospitality the network’s hottest upcoming series is its wealth of story. Maddi Reese is one of Bravo’s sprawling DJ personalities; her boyfriend, Joe Bradley, drew even more eyes to the series after an alleged hook up with RHONY‘s Countess Luann de Lesseps; Michols Peña, Lake Rucker and TJ Dinch have each opened up about what it’s like to be gay in the South; and on season four, Grace Lilly let viewers in on her substance abuse struggles.  It’s reminiscent of the golden days of Vanderpump Rules, where everyone on the cast is willing to bare all for the cameras among a group of close confidantes. That …

2026 Emmy predictions: best comedy actress

Jean Smart has won for each of her other four seasons as brassy standup icon Deborah Vance, and the panel fully expects her to pull off a perfect pentad for “Hacks’ ” final bow. She has 15 career nominations; she could collect her eighth trophy overall. “Jean Smart has won this award for every previous season of ‘Hacks,’ and I can’t imagine that streak ending now,” says Tracy Brown. Glenn Whipp says, “They’re not going to deny her a parting prize for the show’s final go-round.” She’s a dominant consensus pick in Round 2 with the largest lead of any nominee (tied with Katherine LaNasa and Rhea Seehorn in their respective categories), though the BuzzMeter panelists also cherish the work of “The Comeback’s” Lisa Kudrow. Calling her “the only acceptable upset,” Kristen Baldwin writes, “It is actually grotesque that Lisa Kudrow has never won an Emmy for giving the performance of her career as Valerie Cherish in ‘The Comeback.’ ” Matt Roush says Kudrow “would have my vote, but the Emmys love a winner and …

2026 Emmy predictions: best limited series or TV movie actress

The tightest race in the BuzzMeter finds just one point separating the Top 2, with Carey Mulligan precariously perched at No. 1. Seemingly the entire panel has arguments for both her and Sally Field. “I’m aware that the juice around the ‘Beef’ franchise will likely lift the gifted Carey Mulligan for her impossibly unsympathetic role,” says Matt Roush, “but Emmy voters really like Sally Field. Plus: likability.” Trey Mangum argues, “Before nominations, I would have said this would be Carey Mulligan and Sarah Pidgeon going head-to-head. But this is very clearly a moment for Sally Field.” Tracy Brown counters, “Sally Field is great … but I think this one will go to [Mulligan], whose unhappily married Lindsay grows increasingly unhinged and furious.” Glenn Whipp says, “Carey Mulligan has three Oscar nominations, but no trophies. Maybe she can make good on her first Emmy nomination as the unhinged, unhappy wife on ‘Beef.’ ” Kristen Baldwin thinks the voters will take Mulligan, but adds, “Had ‘DTF St. Louis’ [starring supporting actress nominee Linda Cardellini] chosen not to …
