Elizabeth Warren Calls for Crackdown on Crypto’s Role in Child Sexual Abuse

US senators Elizabeth Warren and Bill Cassidy have called for the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security to redouble efforts to stop the use of cryptocurrency to pay for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) online, a problem they claim has worsened. In a letter sent on Thursday, addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, the senators claim that the “pseudonymity” afforded by crypto transactions is helping those that trade in CSAM to evade detection by law enforcement. Citing data from the US Treasury’s Financial Crime Enforcement Network as well as research from Chainalysis, a company that specializes in tracing crypto transactions, and the Internet Watch Foundation, a CSAM-focused charity, the letter asserts that the “use of cryptocurrency in the illicit trade of CSAM appears to be increasing.” Between 2020 and 2022, financial institutions identified 1,800 bitcoin wallets suspected of engaging in transactions linked to child sexual exploitation or human trafficking, the letter states. Although the scale of the crypto-based market for CSAM decreased in 2023, Chainalysis found, …

See a statue of Queen Elizabeth and her corgis unveiled for what would have been her 98th birthday

When some think of the late Queen Elizabeth, her waddling corgis come to mind. In remembrance of what would have been the queen’s 98th birthday, a small English town has immortalized the former head of the church and her close confidants — her corgis. The statue was unveiled to the public on April 21 in Oakham, England. Built by London-based sculptor Hywel Pratley, it depicts a bronze replica of the queen in her regalia and her beloved dogs at the statue’s base. According to an Instagram post from the Rutland County Council, hundreds of people celebrated the unveiling and the former reigning monarch who passed away at 96 in 2022. After a 70-year run, the queen was also Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. The county council said the statue is the “first permanent memorial” of the queen.  Dr. Sarah Furness, the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, commissioned the statue’s erection after the queen’s death. The county council shared that local and public businesses donated to crowdfunding and construction of the queen’s statue. Local children also designed the imagery of the corgi dogs.  During the …

First Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Statue Unveiled in Oakham, England

How does a country honor their longest-serving monarch? The first memorial statue to Queen Elizabeth II, unveiled in England, remembers the queen’s softer side with her favorite dogs. In the quaint English town Oakham, the seven-foot tall bronze statue by Hywel Pratley shows the queen in elegant robes with three corgis at her feet. “What most of us remember about Queen Elizabeth is her warmth,” local dignitary Sarah Furness told the New York Times. “By showing Queen Elizabeth’s love of dogs, we show her humanity,” she continued. Related Articles Britain is now beginning to memorialize its former monarch with municipalities and institutions mounting statues in her honor countrywide, now eighteen months after the queen’s death. Though sculptors began working on some of these statues before the queen’s death, recent commissions capture Queen Elizabeth II’s approachable demeanor, with more slated to be unveiled this fall, including Andy Edwards’s statue of the queen smiling and holding flowers for Newcastle-under-Lyme and two sculptures of the queen by Amy Goodman (one showing the monarch smiling and waving), as well …

Queen Elizabeth “Loved It When Things Went Wrong” During Public Engagements

For years, Queen Elizabeth II had a busy schedule that included hundreds of intricately planned engagements where she met with regular people and saw sights across the world. But according to one of her longtime aides, she was more free-spirited than you might think. Samantha Cohen, who worked for the queen for 18 years, told Australian newspaper The Herald Sun, that despite the preparation that went into an engagement for the queen, she was very tolerant when things didn’t go according to plan. “The Queen had no ego,” Cohen said. “She was so comfortable in herself, yet she loved it when things went wrong—if a cake was not cutting or a plaque didn’t unveil—because everything was so perfectly organized, it spiced her life up when things went wrong.” Australian-born Cohen, who is now chief of staff for mining company Rio Tinto, served as the head of royal communications, assistant and deputy private secretary to the queen, and private secretary to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry during her two decades of service to the palace.
