6m-deep sinkhole swallows truck in Japan, trapping driver

TOKYO: Japanese emergency services struggled for hours on Tuesday (Jan 28) to rescue the driver of a truck that plunged into a sinkhole near Tokyo. Authorities in Yashio City, Saitama, received calls around 9.50am saying that a road had caved in and a lorry had fallen. “We have been carrying out a rescue operation ever since,” a fire department spokesperson told AFP around seven hours later. He added that they estimate the sinkhole is about 10m wide and 6m deep. “Now, we’re trying to see if we can pull up the truck using a large crane,” he said. “There is risk that the hole will collapse.” The driver was able to talk with rescuers until around 1pm but they retreated after the area around the hole became unstable, the spokesperson said. The team initially planned to rescue the driver by going into the sinkhole, but two members were mildly injured while attempting to do so. A sewer system runs through the vicinity of the intersection, and the cause of the road collapse is under investigation, …

Texas Sues Allstate Over Its Collection of Driver Data

Texas Sues Allstate Over Its Collection of Driver Data

The State of Texas sued Allstate on Monday, accusing the insurer of illegally tracking drivers by way of their phones through a subsidiary called Arity that claimed to have the “world’s largest driving behavior database.” “Allstate and Arity paid mobile apps millions of dollars to install Allstate’s tracking software,” Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general, said in a statement. “The personal data of millions of Americans was sold to insurance companies without their knowledge or consent in violation of the law. Texans deserve better and we will hold all these companies accountable.” In a statement, Allstate denied that the company had done anything illegal. “Arity helps consumers get the most accurate auto insurance price after they consent in a simple and transparent way that fully complies with all laws and regulations,” the company said. The New York Times reported last year that information about people’s driving behavior was being collected via smartphone apps, such as Life360 and GasBuddy, and sold to Arity, an analytics company founded by Allstate. Arity was able to analyze the data …

Exclusive-Amazon developing driver eyeglasses to shave seconds off deliveries, sources say

Exclusive-Amazon developing driver eyeglasses to shave seconds off deliveries, sources say

Amazon is developing smart eyeglasses for its delivery drivers to guide them to, around and within buildings, as it tries to smooth the final stretch of an order’s journey to a customer’s home, five people familiar with the matter said. If successful, the glasses would provide drivers with turn-by-turn navigation on a small embedded screen, along their routes and at each stop, according to the people, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity because the project is not public. Such directions could shave valuable seconds off each delivery by providing left or right directions off elevators and around obstacles such as gates or aggressive dogs.  With millions of packages delivered daily, seconds add up. The glasses would also free drivers from using handheld Global Positioning System devices, allowing them to carry more packages. The project underscores the online seller’s efforts to reduce delivery costs per package and support margins as it fights increased competition from Walmart, which has stepped up its e-commerce efforts and cut prices. Walmart is paying independent delivery drivers new incentives …

How Car Chase Scenes Have Evolved Over 100 Years: The Technology Behind Bullitt, The French Connection, Driver, and Other Action Movies

For many a classic action-movie enthusiast, no car chase will ever top the one in Bullitt. The narrator of the Insider video above describes it as “the scene that set the standard for all modern car chases,” one made “iconic partly because of the characters, but also because of their cars.” The pursuer drives a Dodge Charger, a muscle car that “exploded in popularity during the late sixties in the U.S.,” with a V‑8 engine and rear-wheel drive that made it “basically built for informal drag racing.” The pursued, Steve McQueen’s detective protagonist Frank Bullitt, drives an instantly recognizable Highland Green Ford Mustang, “the first major pony car, a more compact, sporty take on the muscle car.” Bullitt could change the game, as they say, thanks not just to the cars but also the cameras available at the time, not least the Arriflex 35 II. “Smaller and more rugged” than the bulky rigs of earlier generations, it made it possible to shoot on actual city streets rather than just studio sets and rear-projection setups. Elon’s politics: how Musk became a driver of elections misinformation | US elections 2024

Elon’s politics: how Musk became a driver of elections misinformation | US elections 2024

When Elon Musk took over as owner of Twitter, researchers and elections officials feared a rampant spread of misinformation that would lead to threats and harassment and undermine democracy. Their fears came true – and Musk himself has emerged as one of its main drivers. The tech billionaire has cast doubt on machines that tabulate votes and mail ballots, both common features of US elections. He has repeatedly claimed there is rampant non-citizen voting, a frequent Republican talking point in this election. Musk, the ultra-wealthy owner of Tesla and other tech companies, is scheduled to interview Donald Trump on Monday, where they are sure to find common ground on these election conspiracy theories. Musk is a vocal supporter of the former US president and current Republican nominee. He has restored the Twitter/X accounts of people banned under previous ownership, dismantling the platform’s fact-checking and safety features. Trump’s X account, which was suspended after the January 6 insurrection, was restored as well, though Trump has not returned actively to the platform. “Electronic voting machines and anything …

Ambulance driver taken to court for speeding during emergency response

Ambulance driver taken to court for speeding during emergency response

An ambulance driver who was taken to court for speeding while responding to a blue light emergency has called the proceedings “embarrassing”. Matt Wood, 27, was caught going at 90mph on the M27 as he drove to Southampton Airport in January last year to pick up an “unstable” patient arriving from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The emergency worker, who was driving an unmarked ambulance, provided evidence he was responding to a medical emergency but was still prosecuted, which he has branded “a complete waste of time”. He attended Southampton magistrates’ court after receiving a notice of intended prosecution (NIP), but the case was eventually dismissed because of the evidence he provided. He said: “I couldn’t believe it even got taken to court. It’s very odd this has happened. “I am pleased the case has been dropped but it is a waste of everyone’s time. “It’s embarrassing it has even got this far. I am hoping this won’t happen again.” Matt Wood was still prosecuted despite providing evidence he was responding to an emergency Hampshire …

Cheshire: Driver who reached speeds of 93mph jailed for killing two women | UK News

A driver who reached speeds of 93mph has been jailed for causing the deaths of two women. Benjamin Lewis, 31, was sentenced to 10 years in prison at Chester Crown Court on Wednesday. Ellie Crossley, 20, and her friend Rebecca Doughty, also 20, who were both from Connah’s Quay in Flintshire, died in the collision in Dunkirk, Cheshire, on 25 November 2021. The court heard Lewis had been driving at speeds of up to 93mph in a 60mph zone on the A5117. He then lost control of his BMW 420D and collided with a Citroen DS3 which was travelling in the opposite direction towards Cheshire Oaks. Lewis, from the Cheshire town of Neston, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. Image: Pic: Family handout The families of Ms Crossley and Ms Doughty said their lives and world had been “changed forever”. “Ellie and Becca had been best friends since primary school and were inseparable and had their whole lives ahead of them,” they added. ‘Beautiful angels’ The families said their “beautiful …

DoorDash Driver Confronts Customer At Ring Camera Because Of Their $8 Tip

How much should you tip? Are you a horrible person for not leaving a tip? Or for leaving too small of a tip? These questions are the pinnacle of the tipping culture conversation, but it seems there will never be a definite answer. Whether it’s a sit-down restaurant, a grocery delivery, or valet parking, everyone has an opinion of what acceptable tipping looks like. That’s especially true for one delivery driver, who took things a step further with a customer. A DoorDash driver angrily confronted a customer after receiving an $8 tip. A video showed a DoorDash driver speaking into a customer’s Ring doorbell camera, confronting them about the amount left as their tip.
